By the fourth day I had stopped counting hours the way a hostage counts them and started counting them the way an analyst does — not as a measure of suffering, but as a growing dataset.
I knew, now, that Kaelen woke without fail an hour before true dawn, and that the hour immediately after waking was the worst of his day, the hour when whatever the curse did to him overnight took longest to recede. I knew that he ate almost nothing before midday and that this had less to do with appetite than with an old habit — a soldier's habit, I guessed, from some campaign where food had been scarce enough that skipping it became a kind of discipline he'd never unlearned. I knew that meetings scheduled after long council sessions ran a measurably higher risk of him losing his temper than meetings scheduled fresh in the morning, and that the risk climbed sharply anytime the word betrayal, or any word adjacent to it, entered a conversation within his hearing.
None of this made me safer, strictly speaking. It made me useful, which in a room like this one was the only currency that had ever kept me breathing.
The maid from the second morning — I had begun privately calling her Lys, for no reason beyond needing some way to distinguish the handful of staff who occasionally saw me from the many who didn't — had stopped flinching at the sight of me by the third day and started, instead, leaving small offerings of dried meat near my bench when she thought no one was watching. It was a kindness that told me two things: that she was braver than her first reaction suggested, and that whatever official story existed about the strange creature in the emperor's chambers, it hadn't yet been made frightening enough to override basic decency.
I filed her, too, under useful. Not because I intended to exploit her — some old, stubborn piece of the negotiator's code refused that framing outright — but because a person willing to be kind to an unclassified anomaly, in a court built on fear, was rare enough to be worth remembering.
The palace itself had begun to resolve, over four days, from an undifferentiated maze of gold and stone into something closer to a map. I understood now that the private wing sat at the western edge of a much larger complex, connected by three corridors to the administrative heart of the empire and by a fourth, narrower and more heavily guarded than the rest, to a section no one had yet walked me through and no one, I noticed, ever discussed by name. I catalogued that omission the way I catalogued everything: not proof of anything, but a gap in the data worth remembering the shape of.
The season here, as far as I could judge from the slant of light through the high windows, sat somewhere near what I'd have called early autumn on Earth — cool mornings, a sharper gold to the afternoon sun, though whether Solaris even mapped its year onto anything resembling four familiar seasons was one more thing I had no way to ask and no one yet willing to explain to a fox. I found, somewhat to my own surprise, that I minded the not-knowing less than I'd have expected. A negotiator learns early that comprehensive information is a luxury, not a prerequisite; you work with what the room gives you, and the room, so far, had been generous enough.
What I minded more, in the quiet hours between summonses, was a smaller and more personal gap in the data — the fact that four days into an arrangement that required me to read this man's every flicker of feeling with total, clinical accuracy, I had started, without deciding to, reading my own with rather less discipline than the job demanded. I noted it the way I'd have noted a fever in myself on the job: acknowledged, filed, not yet addressed, because addressing it would have required admitting there was something here worth being careful about beyond simple survival.
---
The summons came mid-morning, delivered by a guard captain whose posture suggested he'd rather have been anywhere else: a suspected conspirator, taken the previous night on evidence still being assembled, was to be questioned before the day's other business began.
Kaelen received the news the way he received most news that promised violence — with a stillness that read, to anyone who hadn't spent a week studying him, as calm. I had learned by then that it wasn't calm. It was compression. The Blood Curse's paranoia didn't announce itself loudly in him anymore; it had learned, the way any chronic condition does, to move quietly under a controlled surface, surfacing only in decisions made a half-degree too fast, judgments landed a half-degree too harsh.
He carried me into the questioning chamber without comment, the way he now carried me into most rooms — not affection, I reminded myself, just the security logic of an unclassified variable he preferred close. The chamber itself was smaller and colder than the council room, built, I understood immediately, for exactly one purpose. A single chair sat bolted to the floor at its center. The man seated in it was perhaps forty, well-dressed despite a night in custody, with the specific, brittle composure of someone rehearsing an innocent man's outrage a little too carefully.
I read him before Kaelen had finished crossing the room. Rehearsed indignation. Genuine fear underneath it, but fear of the wrong thing — not fear of being wrongly accused, but fear of being correctly accused of something smaller than what he was currently being questioned about. That distinction mattered more than anything else in the room.
A second man stood near the door, robes marking him as some manner of court physician rather than a guard, a leather satchel held against his chest with both arms in the manner of someone who had been asked to attend and would rather not have been. I filed him without much attention at first — a witness, presumably, called to certify the prisoner's condition before and after questioning, standard procedure in any regime concerned enough with appearances to bother — until I noticed the particular way his eyes tracked Kaelen rather than the prisoner, assessing rather than observing, the small, professional attention of a man whose actual job in this room was monitoring the emperor rather than the accused.
That, too, I filed. A physician kept close enough to attend interrogations was a physician kept close enough to notice things about his patient that the patient himself might prefer stayed unnoticed. I wondered, briefly, how much this particular man already knew about the black tracery beneath Kaelen's collar, and whether knowing it made him an ally or simply another variable in an already crowded field of them.
---
"You will explain," Kaelen said, without preamble, "your correspondence with the southern garrison commander."
The man's outrage deployed exactly on schedule — a beat too fast, a register too loud, the performance of a man who had prepared this exact denial in advance rather than reacting to the accusation in real time. "Majesty, I have never—"
"Corresponded with him regarding grain shipments," Kaelen finished, flat, uninterested in the denial's shape. "We have the letters."
Here was where it went wrong, and it went wrong fast. The man's fear spiked — visibly, a flush at the collar, a stutter in his breathing — but it spiked around the word grain, not around the word garrison. He was afraid of being caught in something involving grain. He was not afraid of being caught in whatever Kaelen actually suspected him of, which meant, as far as I could read the room, that the two things were not the same conspiracy at all.
Kaelen didn't see it. He was exhausted, three days deep into a season of assassination attempts and Council maneuvering, and exhaustion narrows a good interrogator's aperture until only the loudest signal registers. He read the man's fear as confirmation.
"You will tell me," Kaelen said, voice dropping into a register I recognized now as the one that preceded verdicts rather than questions, "which garrison officers received your correspondence, or you will tell me nothing ever again."
"Majesty, I swear to you on my house's name, I have committed no treason—"
"You have committed something," Kaelen said. "Every liar in this chamber has committed something. The question that interests me is whether it is the something I asked about."
It was, I thought, watching him, a genuinely sound principle, stated with genuinely sound logic, and about to be applied to entirely the wrong crime because the exhaustion sitting behind his eyes had narrowed his patience past the point where he could hold two competing readings of the same fear in his head at once. I watched him begin, in the set of his shoulders, to move toward a verdict — and a wrong verdict, delivered in a chamber built for exactly one purpose, was not the kind of mistake that corrected itself later with an apology.
I ran the calculation the way I'd run it a hundred times in rooms with worse odds: how much force does this signal need, how visible can I afford to be, what does it cost me if I am wrong. In every previous room, in my old life, I would have had four seconds and a voice to spend them with. Here I had perhaps two, and nothing but a small, unproven vocabulary invented four days ago and used successfully exactly twice.
I used it a third time, and I made it larger than either of the first two.
---
I pushed myself up his sleeve — not a subtle gesture, not something that could be mistaken for an animal shifting position, but a deliberate, visible climb toward his collar — and buried myself against the side of his neck with as much force as this body could produce.
It was the signal I'd built into the very first vocabulary I'd offered him, the night of the rite, before either of us understood what we were building: this one is lying. I had used it once before, small and half-hidden, in the council chamber. I used it now in front of a guard captain and a prisoner and every guard stationed along the chamber's walls, because subtlety was a luxury I no longer had time for.
Kaelen went rigid. Not from the physical contact — he'd tolerated far more than this by now — but from the visibility of it, the sheer, public strangeness of an emperor's pet fox interrupting an interrogation. I felt the flare of his old suspicion reignite, sharp and immediate: was this a distraction, engineered by the prisoner or his allies, was the creature compromised, was any of this real.
He almost pulled me off his shoulder. I felt his hand rise toward me, felt the decision forming to remove the variable rather than interpret it.
Then, instead, he stopped. And asked a different question than the one he'd been about to ask.
---
"The garrison commander," Kaelen said, slower now, watching the prisoner's face with new and specific attention rather than his previous general suspicion, "requested grain shipments in his own name. Correct?"
"Yes—" the man started, relief flooding his voice a half-second too early.
"Under whose seal did you approve them?"
The question landed exactly where I'd hoped it would, and the man's composure didn't survive it. Not because the true answer was catastrophic — it wasn't, not in the way the original accusation had implied — but because it exposed a smaller, uglier truth: he had forged a lesser official's seal to expedite a shipment for personal profit, skimming the difference, entirely unrelated to whatever larger conspiracy Kaelen's advisors had assumed connected him to the garrison commander's actual, separate treason.
It took another quarter hour to fully unravel. The man's composure, once the true shape of his crime had been forced into the open, collapsed into a different register entirely — no longer performed outrage but a genuine, ugly relief, the specific expression of someone realizing that the truth, however damning, was survivable in a way the accusation he'd been dreading was not. He confessed to the forged seal readily once the larger charge had been set aside, almost eager to trade a smaller guilt for a larger acquittal, and detailed, in the process, three other officials who had taken a similar cut of the diverted shipments.
The physician near the door had gone very still during the exchange, and I understood, watching him, that he was recalculating something too — perhaps how much credit to give an emperor's instincts the next time they seemed, from the outside, to be softening rather than sharpening. Kaelen did not look at him. Kaelen, in fact, did not look at anyone in the room for confirmation of anything; he simply absorbed the confession, turned the new names over to a scribe waiting at the chamber's edge with an instruction to open separate, quieter inquiries, and moved on, as though redirecting the entire architecture of a conspiracy investigation mid-sentence were an unremarkable Tuesday.
The man was guilty — of theft, of forgery, of a corruption entirely mundane and entirely provable — but not of the conspiracy that had brought him into this chamber, which meant that whoever the real conspirator moving grain through the southern garrison was, he was still out there, unquestioned, unaware that his cover story had just collapsed for reasons that had nothing to do with him.
Kaelen ordered the man held for the lesser, provable crime rather than executed for the larger, unproven one. It was, by the standards of the previous four days I'd observed, an almost extraordinary act of restraint, and I noticed, as the guards led the prisoner out still weak-kneed with relief, that not one person in the room seemed to understand why the emperor had shown it.
Not one person except, perhaps, the physician, who glanced once at me before he gathered his satchel and left — a brief, assessing look, gone before I could decide whether it had been suspicion or something closer to recognition.
---
He didn't speak to me again until the chamber had emptied and the guard captain's footsteps had faded down the corridor.
We were alone, in the narrow antechamber outside the questioning room, and he stood very still for a long moment, looking not at me but at the middle distance, running back through the last quarter hour the way I imagined he ran through most of his decisions after the fact — searching for the seam where instinct had overridden judgment, and finding, this time, that the seam had led somewhere true instead of somewhere disastrous.
"He would have died today," Kaelen said. Quiet. Not quite to me, not quite to himself either — some third register I hadn't heard from him yet, the voice of a man testing a thought by speaking it aloud in the one room where speaking felt safe. "For the wrong reason."
I held still, the specific stillness that had become, over four days, its own kind of answer.
"You knew that." It wasn't a question this time. There was no upward lift to it, no genuine uncertainty — only the flat, careful tone of a man setting a fact down on a table between us to see if it held weight when examined directly. "You understood every word in that room."
I met his eyes and did not look away, and for the first time since the rite, I let something show in my own gaze that wasn't strategy. Not confirmation — I couldn't afford confirmation, not yet, not until I understood what a man capable of ordering executions on instinct alone would do with the knowledge that his pet possessed a fully independent mind. But not denial either. Something in between, something honest enough to survive scrutiny without handing him the whole truth before either of us was ready for the weight of it.
He studied me for a long moment, the ice-grey of his eyes doing the particular narrowing I'd already learned to associate with recalculation rather than anger.
"You hear me," he said, finally, so quietly it barely disturbed the air between us. "Don't you."
I did not nod. I did not need to. The silence that followed was its own kind of answer, and for once, in a career built entirely on the careful management of exactly this kind of moment, I let it stand exactly as loud as it wanted to be.
He didn't push further. That, too, told me something — a man less disciplined, or less exhausted, might have pressed the question until he'd forced some clumsier confirmation out of me, some gesture too plain to retreat from later. Kaelen simply absorbed the silence, filed it the way I filed everything, and turned the subject sideways instead, the way a good interrogator does when a subject has given exactly as much as they're going to give in one sitting.
"The garrison commander is still out there," he said, already moving again, already reassembling the flat, functional voice he used for everyone who wasn't currently alone with him in a quiet room. "Whatever this was, it isn't finished." He glanced down at me, and something in the set of his mouth came as close to wry as I'd yet seen it. "I find myself, against every instinct I have cultivated for a very long time, inclined to keep you close for the rest of it."
It was not trust. I understood that clearly enough not to mistake it for anything softer than it was — a commander recognizing a useful asset, nothing more, filed under the same cold utility as everything else in this palace. But utility, I had learned a long time ago in rooms far less strange than this one, was very often where trust eventually chose to begin, when it began at all.
I said nothing, because I still had nothing to say it with. But I let him carry me out of the antechamber with my head resting, deliberately, against the steady, familiar rhythm of his pulse, and understood that whatever this negotiation was becoming, it had just survived its first real test of honesty and come out, against most of my professional expectations, intact.
