The morning after the reception had a different quality to it.
Grace noticed it first in the way the household moved around her: slightly less careful, slightly less the deliberate neutrality of staff managing an unknown. Not warm — warmth was not in the register of Ravencroft Manor, which had a relationship with warmth roughly equivalent to its relationship with untended plants: theoretically possible, practically absent. But something had shifted. She had been seen in a public context with Cassian, had been seen handling Lady Ashford's comment without flinching, had demonstrated in the specific vocabulary of Aurelith society that she was not going to be easily managed.
People who were not going to be easily managed were, in houses like this, treated with a specific kind of cautious respect. Not affection. Respect.
Mira noticed it too. "The housekeeper said good morning to me like she meant it," she reported, with the tone of someone observing a minor natural phenomenon.
"How did she say it before?"
"Like she was completing a task."
Grace considered this information. Then: "What do you make of Rowan Ashmere?"
Mira thought about it. "Frightened of something specific. Not generally anxious — he doesn't have that quality. But there's something in particular he's holding very carefully." A pause. "He looks at you sometimes, when you're not watching him. Not like he's watching you. Like he's — checking. Making sure you're still there."
Grace filed this. "Yes," she said. "That's what I think too."
---
She had intended to spend the morning in the library, working through a specific set of botanical texts she had identified as relevant to Winter Rose's documented properties. She had a growing list of questions that could be answered through secondary sources before she needed to approach anyone directly, and she preferred to exhaust secondary sources first. Direct questions cost something — they told people what you were looking for — and she was not yet willing to pay that cost in full.
Mira had other ideas, or rather, the house had other ideas expressed through Mira.
She was three pages into a monograph on Elyndorian botanical alkaloids when Mira appeared in the library doorway with the specific expression that meant she had found something and wasn't sure how to introduce it.
"What," Grace said, without looking up from the page.
"I was airing your room. I moved the chair to get to the window and the leg caught on the edge of the baseboard trim and I was pulling it back and —"
"What did you find?"
Mira held up a small wooden box, approximately the size of a large apple, with a tarnished brass fitting on one side.
Grace looked at it. Then she closed the botanical monograph and stood up.
---
The hollow in the baseboard was not a constructed hiding place. It was the result of a section of the original plaster having separated from the wall behind it over time, creating a gap large enough, if you knew it was there, to place a small object. Not invisible — you would find it if you were looking, or if a chair leg happened to catch the baseboard at the right angle. Findable by a person who was attentive. Findable by a person who had left it for someone else to find.
Mira held the music box while Grace carefully pulled the note from beside it.
The note was written on paper that had been folded precisely, edges aligned with the exactness of someone who took care with things. The handwriting was the same as the journal — controlled, trained, the penmanship of careful education. Not the last frantic note of a person running out of time. The note of a person who had sat down and thought about what they needed to say and had said it in the minimum necessary words.
*Don't fear the man they call a monster. Fear the one who calls you Grace.*
Grace read it twice. Then she held it still and let her mind move through what the sentence implied.
Not: *don't fear Ravencroft* or *don't fear Cassian* or any other specific name. *The man they call a monster* — which was Cassian, obviously, in the vocabulary of Aurelith's social narrative, the reputation that preceded him into every room he entered. Elowen had been brought here with the same stories Grace had been brought here with. She had been told the same things. And she was saying: that is not the danger.
And then the second part, which was the more careful piece: *the one who calls you Grace.* Not *the one who named you* — not a historical statement about origin. The one who calls you Grace now. Present tense. Actively. The one for whom the name is a utility in the current moment.
Grace thought about who had called her Grace since she arrived at Ravencroft. Seraphine, occasionally, though she more often used the formal address. Draven Holt, always, with the specific warmth she had identified as wrong-temperatured. Lady Ashford, in the comment that was not really a greeting. The guests at the reception, in the general traffic of social address.
And Cassian: never. Cassian had not called her Grace once. Not in their first meeting, not in the corridor outside the locked conservatory, not last night. He called her Miss Velmira with the formality of a man keeping a specific distance, or he called her nothing at all.
She folded the note along its original creases.
---
Mira wound the key on the underside of the music box and lifted the lid.
The mechanism was old and the notes had the slight irregularity of age, but the melody was clear enough: a simple piece, not long, something that could be a lullaby or a folk song or a composed piece simplified for a box of this size. Grace did not recognise it. She was quite certain of that — she had a strong musical memory, and this was not something she had heard.
And yet.
Something in the progression of notes — the interval between the fourth and fifth note, the way the phrase resolved — produced in her a response that was not recognition but was adjacent to it. Not *I know this* but *I know the shape of this.* The specific cognitive experience of encountering something from a very long time ago, before the period of clear memory, when the brain had stored experience as pattern rather than event.
The music box played through once and then slowed and stopped.
Grace stood very still.
Mira looked at her. "You know it?"
"No," Grace said. "I don't know it."
A pause.
"But something does," she said. "Something that is not knowing."
Mira was quiet for a moment. Then, gently: "What does it feel like?"
Grace tried to find the right words, which was not something she usually struggled with. "Like — the way a smell sometimes tells you about a room before you can see it. Information without content. A shape without a name."
She took the music box from Mira and held it.
The melody. The interval between those notes. The shape of the phrase.
She thought about Rowan calling her Liora. She thought about the memory fragment in the Glass Garden — the woman's hand, the running, the name that had dissolved before she could catch it. She thought about the initials on the chair in Lower Glasshouse, which she had not yet found but which she was increasingly certain were there, waiting.
"Put it back," she said, after a moment.
Mira looked at her. "You're sure?"
"The note and the box should stay together, and they should stay here. If someone is looking for evidence of what we've found, they'll look in our rooms first." She handed the box back. "Leave them in the wall. I've already remembered what I need to remember."
---
She went to find Cassian.
Not to confront — she had learned, across the days of this investigation, that confrontation was the wrong tool for him. He did not respond to pressure the way most people did; pressure caused him to reduce rather than reveal, to give less rather than more. What worked, as far as she had determined, was precision. Specific questions asked at moments when he had already committed to a direction of honesty.
She found him in the garden — the formal garden, not the Glass Garden, the outdoor one that had been maintained for appearances rather than cultivation and which in winter was all bare geometry and frozen stone. He was looking at something in the far corner with the expression of a man reviewing a problem rather than observing a scene.
She stood beside him without preamble. He looked at her. Looked back at the garden.
"Elowen left a note," Grace said. "In the wall of the room."
A pause. "What did it say?"
"'Don't fear the man they call a monster. Fear the one who calls you Grace.'" She kept her eyes on the bare garden geometry. "I don't think it was for me specifically. I think it was for whoever came next. She expected someone to come next."
Cassian said nothing for a long moment.
"She was thorough," he said finally. The quality in his voice was something she hadn't heard from him before — not the controlled flatness, not the careful precision. Something older. Something that had lived in him long enough to have worn smooth. Grief, she thought. Or the particular version of grief that was responsibility.
"She was trying to protect the next one," Grace said.
"Yes."
"Did she know there would be a next one?"
Another pause. Longer. The winter garden was very still.
"She had reason to believe so," he said.
Grace turned to look at him. He was still looking at the garden. His jaw was set in the specific configuration she had come to associate with him when he was choosing his words with extreme care — not choosing to deceive, choosing to be precise about the boundary of what he would say.
"That's not the same as you telling her there would be," she said.
He looked at her then. And for a moment, the careful control was insufficient — she saw something move through his expression that was more complex than what his management usually allowed her to see. Not guilt, exactly. Not just guilt.
"No," he said. "It isn't."
She held his gaze for a moment longer. Then she looked back at the garden.
"She was right about the note," Grace said. "About which direction the danger comes from." She paused. "I've been paying attention to who uses that name. You don't."
Cassian was silent.
"You've never called me Grace," she said. "Not once."
The silence stretched. Outside, the wind moved through the bare garden, making a sound like paper.
"No," he said, very quietly. "I haven't."
Grace nodded. There was nothing else, for now, that needed to be said. She had what she had come for — not information, exactly. Confirmation. The specific relief of having a hypothesis proven correct, even when the hypothesis was not a comfortable one.
She turned and walked back toward the house.
Behind her, she heard him stay where he was for a long time before he followed.
