The distillery was not listed on any map of the manor that Grace had been given access to.
This was, she had come to understand, a characteristic of Ravencroft's architecture of information: the omissions were as structured as the inclusions. The maps she had been shown covered the residential areas, the formal rooms, the gardens in their general outlines. They did not cover the working parts of the estate — the places where things were made, processed, managed. The assumption, which she supposed was not unreasonable in most circumstances, was that a guest did not need to know where the laundry was done or where the Winter Rose was processed.
She had found the distillery by smell.
Not the sweet surface smell of Winter Rose, which she had become accustomed to as a permanent background note of life at Ravencroft — her sinuses had adjusted to it over the course of a week in the way that sinuses adjusted to any continuous ambient scent, downregulating the perception until it was present but not prominent. What she had smelled, three days ago, while walking the south corridor of the service wing on a route intended to help her understand the back-of-house layout, was something underneath that surface sweetness: sharper, more concentrated, the specific smell of a process rather than a plant. Distillation. Heat applied to botanical material to produce an extract.
She had noted the direction and the distance and had spent two days triangulating before she was certain of the location: the far end of the western service court, accessible through a door that was not locked but was also not labelled.
She went in the late morning, when the household's main activity was in the east wing and the service court was relatively quiet.
---
The distillery was a working space in the way that working spaces were: organised around function rather than appearance, with the particular quality of a room that had been designed and added to over many years by people who cared about the work being done there and not at all about the room itself. Three large copper stills on the south wall, connected by an arrangement of tubes and valves to a series of collection vessels. Drying racks along the east wall, currently holding Winter Rose specimens in various stages of desiccation. A long central worktable with equipment she recognised from her botanical education — scales, mortar and pestle, measuring instruments, glass vessels of various sizes — and equipment she recognised less well, which suggested a more specialised process than standard botanical preparation.
Two workers, both women in middle age, both wearing the aprons and gloves that the work required. They looked up when Grace entered, with the expression of people who were not expecting a visitor but whose professional composure was sufficient to handle one.
"Lady Velmira," the nearer one said, with the adjustment of a person recalibrating her assumptions about what the morning contained.
"Please don't stop on my account," Grace said. "I was curious about the process. I have some botanical training — I hope you don't mind if I observe for a few minutes."
They didn't mind, or arranged not to mind, which was close enough for her purposes.
---
She stood to one side of the worktable and watched, and asked questions when the questions would appear natural and not intrusive. The distillation process itself was familiar in its general outlines — she had seen similar work with other botanical materials. The specific features of Winter Rose processing were more interesting: the precise temperature control that was apparently critical, the specific timing of the collection, the difference in product between early-season and late-season processing.
And then, more carefully, the product range. Winter Rose material was processed into several different outputs, she learned. A standard aromatic product, used in the manor's domestic arrangements and sold in small quantities to select Aurelith households. A refined perfume-grade extract. A pharmaceutical-grade preparation that went directly to Draven Holt, labelled and sealed, not available for general use.
"Dr. Holt manages the pharmaceutical preparation himself?" Grace asked, with the specific tone of mild professional curiosity.
"All of it," the worker confirmed. "From the distillation stage. We do the initial processing and he takes over for the final preparation."
"What is the pharmaceutical preparation used for?"
A slight hesitation. "Medical purposes, I believe, my lady. The doctor would know the specifics."
Grace made a note of the hesitation. She was building a picture of what was known in this house by whom and to what degree, and hesitations were as informative as answers.
---
The headache came without warning.
She had been standing in the distillery for perhaps twenty minutes, and the accumulated concentration of Winter Rose aromatic compounds in the air had been, she now understood, reaching a threshold. The surface sweetness had been manageable. The underlying sharpness had been manageable. But the combination, at this concentration, sustained over this duration —
It was not like the headaches she occasionally experienced from other causes. It arrived as pressure — a specific, located pressure at the base of her skull, as if someone had placed a hand there and was pushing forward — and within thirty seconds had expanded to fill the top of her head, and within a minute was producing a visual disturbance at the edges of her vision: not darkness, not blurring, but a slight unreality, the way the edges of the room seemed marginally less fixed than they should be.
She put her hand on the edge of the worktable.
The nearer worker looked at her. "My lady? Are you well?"
"Perfectly well," Grace said. Her voice was level. It required approximately three times more effort than usual to make it level. "I think I've been standing too long. I'll step out for some air."
She moved toward the door. The distance was not large — ten, twelve feet — but her sense of the room's geometry had shifted slightly, the way distances shifted at the beginning of a fever.
The door. She put her hand on it. Pushed.
Fresh air. Cold. She breathed it.
---
Cassian was outside.
This was not, Grace registered through the headache, a coincidence arranged for her benefit. He was coming from the direction of the stables, dressed for outdoor work, and he had not been expecting to find her here. But he found her, and in the two seconds between when he saw her and when she was aware that he had seen her, his expression underwent a change that she catalogued even through the headache's distortion: recognition of something, assessment of that something, and a specific quality of alarm that was not general but pointed.
He crossed the distance between them in a way that was controlled and faster than casual.
"How long were you inside?"
"Twenty minutes, approximately."
He looked at her face. She was aware that whatever he was looking for, he was finding it, because his expression shifted again — the alarm becoming something more settled, which was, she thought, either better or worse depending on what settled meant here.
"Come away from the door."
His hand was at her elbow — not gripping, just present, the contact of a person providing a direction rather than a support, though she was not entirely sure her sense of the ground was reliable. She let him move her away from the distillery door and into the open service court, and the cold air increased and her sinuses began, slowly, to clear.
They stood in the service court. The headache was receding at the edges. The visual disturbance was already less. Grace breathed the cold air systematically and waited for her body to finish the work it was doing.
"Better?" he asked, after a minute.
"Yes. The effect dissipates quickly with fresh air."
He was quiet. She looked at him.
"You know this effect," she said. "You're not surprised by it."
"I know it's possible for some people," he said carefully.
"Not some people," Grace said. She kept her voice level — not accusatory, she was not yet ready to be accusatory, but precise. "Specific people. You knew I might be one of them. That is why you moved Draven Holt's questioning when you did. That is why you removed the aromatic products from the east wing without explanation."
Cassian looked at the service court wall. A long pause.
"Yes," he said.
One word. Unelaborated. But she had learned, in the past ten days, that one honest word from Cassian Ravencroft was worth more than a paragraph of managed information.
"Why didn't you warn me?" she asked.
His jaw tightened. "Because warning you would have required explaining why you might be susceptible. And I don't —" He stopped. Started again. "I haven't had all the information I needed to explain it correctly."
"And the information you don't have," Grace said. "Is it information about me, or about what was done to me?"
The question landed in the quiet service court and stayed there.
Cassian turned to look at her. The afternoon light was flat and grey, and in it his expression had none of its usual management — not raw, not unguarded, but reduced to something more fundamental than the control. He looked, she thought, like a man who was very tired of carrying the weight of things he couldn't say yet.
"Both," he said.
Grace nodded. She looked at the door of the distillery, which had closed behind her.
"You're going to have to tell me eventually," she said. "Whatever it is. You know that."
"I know," he said.
"And the longer you wait, the more I'll have found on my own, and the more damage the waiting will have done."
A pause. "I know that too."
Grace pulled her coat closer against the cold and looked at the winter sky above the service court.
"Two things," she said. "I want the distillery closed to processing while the wind is from the east. And I want to see the full record of whatever pharmaceutical preparation Draven Holt makes from Winter Rose material." She looked at him. "Can you arrange those things?"
He looked at her steadily. "The first, yes. Today. The second —" A pause. "The second will take longer."
"How much longer?"
"I need to find something first," he said. "Before the record will make sense to you without — without the wrong context."
Grace looked at him for a long moment. She was measuring the distance between what he was saying and what he was not saying, and finding that the distance had reduced slightly from where it had been a week ago. He was moving toward truth; the motion was slow and controlled and maddening, but it was motion.
"All right," she said. "But I'm not waiting indefinitely."
"I know," he said. And then, very quietly, with the specific quality of a person saying something they had decided to say rather than something that escaped them: "I don't want you to."
She looked at him. He looked back at her.
The cold continued. The sky was very grey. And the space between them in the service court had changed shape in a way that neither of them commented on as she turned and walked back toward the house.
