She returned to the Glass Garden on the fourth day after the distillery.
This was a deliberate decision, made with the same methodology she applied to most deliberate decisions: she had identified the relevant variables, assessed the available information, and determined that controlled exposure was preferable to uninformed avoidance. She knew now that the distillery concentration was dangerous. She did not know whether the lower concentration of the Garden itself — the ambient level she had experienced on her first visit, which had produced the memory fragment but not the headache — was dangerous in the same way or different.
The difference mattered. If the Garden concentration was safe at measured exposure, it was useful — it had already demonstrated that it could produce memory responses in her, and she was increasingly convinced that her memories were a significant part of what she needed to find. If the Garden concentration was also dangerous at sustained exposure, she needed to know that too, and sooner rather than later.
She told Mira where she was going and approximately how long she intended to stay. She did not tell Cassian, for reasons that were partly practical — she did not want to have the conversation about whether she should go before she had the information that would come from going — and partly something else she did not examine too carefully.
The Garden in the late morning had its characteristic quality: the particular filtered light, the controlled cold, the beds of Winter Rose in their current state of partial winter dormancy. Grace walked the main path at a deliberate pace, not stopping, not touching anything, allowing the ambient concentration to establish itself in her system while she moved and breathed normally.
The tingling was present within three minutes. Low-level, familiar.
She noted it. Filed it. Kept walking.
---
Rowan was in the back section.
He was working on the experimental beds — kneeling in the particular posture of someone doing close work with small plants, his back to her, his movements unhurried and specific. She had observed him enough by now to have formed a picture of him as a worker: thorough, patient, the kind of attentiveness to individual plants that was not romantic investment but professional habit. He treated the garden the way a good doctor treated patients — each one distinct, each one requiring its own specific attention.
She walked slowly enough that her footsteps were audible on the stone path before she reached him. He heard her coming. He did not look up immediately, which was not rudeness — it was the prerogative of a man who had been working this garden for years and who was finishing a specific action before being interrupted.
When he did look up, he looked at her with the expression she had catalogued before: checking. Making sure she was still there, as Mira had characterised it. Something that was not quite worry and was adjacent to it.
"Lady Velmira," he said.
"Mr. Ashmere." She stopped at the edge of the bed he was working on. "I won't interrupt. I was walking the garden — getting a sense of the ambient conditions at this end." She paused. "The experimental section. What are these?"
He looked at the plants. "Variety crosses. Different root stocks from the standard Winter Rose. Lord Ravencroft wanted to understand how much of the compound profile was genetic and how much was environmental."
"And?"
"Mostly genetic. The cross-stocks have lower compound profiles regardless of growing conditions. The standard variety is the one with the full chemistry."
Grace looked at the crosses. Smaller plants, lighter colour in the leaves. "So any effect the standard variety has on people wouldn't be replicated by these?"
"Wouldn't be replicated as strongly. There's still some profile. But not at the levels that cause —" He stopped.
She looked at him. "The levels that cause what?"
Rowan was quiet for a moment. He was choosing his words with the careful economy she had observed in him before — not the smooth management of Cassian's careful control, but the rougher economy of a man who did not talk much and, when he did, meant what he said exactly.
"Sensitivities," he said finally.
"In specific people."
"In specific people," he confirmed.
Grace absorbed this. She crouched down on the opposite side of the bed from him, at his level, which she had found produced more candid conversation than standing over someone. "How long have you been working this garden?"
"Eleven years."
"And in that time, how many people have demonstrated sensitivities to the standard variety?"
A pause. "Two that I know of personally."
She waited. He did not volunteer the identities. She did not push — yet. "And what do the sensitivities look like? From the outside."
"Depends on the exposure level," he said, with the practiced specificity of someone who had observed this more than once. "Low ambient — unusual mental effects. Fragments. Sometimes people describe it as memory, but it's — I think it's more accurate to say it's the plant doing something to whatever is already there. Finding things that are already stored and making them available." He paused. "Uncomfortable for most people. Worse for some."
"And high concentration?"
"Headaches. Visual disturbance. If sustained — worse. There have been cases of significant cognitive disruption from sustained high exposure." He looked at the plant in his hands. "The pharmaceutical preparation is the highest concentration form. Dr. Holt manages that carefully."
"Does he," Grace said.
Rowan did not respond to this.
---
She stood and walked further into the section, following the path between the experimental beds toward the back wall of the Glass Garden. The tingling in her sinuses was more present now — the back section had a different air quality, she noted, which must be related to the ventilation design.
She was not paying sufficient attention to the ambient effect. Later, she would identify this as the mistake: she had been gathering information actively, which required cognitive engagement, and the engaged mind was apparently less effective at monitoring its own state under compound influence.
The floor dipped slightly near the back wall — a gradient she hadn't noticed before, designed for drainage. Her body's proprioception, slightly unreliable under the current conditions, did not compensate quickly enough. Her foot misjudged the gradient.
She did not fall. Her hand found the iron support structure and caught. But her body went through the motion of a near-fall — the lurch, the overcorrection — and in the moment of overcorrection she went lightheaded in a way that was different from the ambient tingling: sharper, more comprehensive, the specific dizziness of blood pressure adjusting too quickly.
Rowan was beside her.
She had not heard him move. He was simply there — one hand at her elbow, steady, not gripping. And his voice, low and immediate:
"Easy. Easy, Liora."
---
The world did not stop. There was no dramatic silence, no orchestration. The Glass Garden continued around her: the light through the panels, the controlled cold, the smell of Winter Rose. Rowan's hand was at her elbow. Her hand was on the iron support. The dizziness was receding.
What happened was smaller and more absolute than drama.
The name landed in her body before her mind processed it. Not in her ears — or not only in her ears — but somewhere below conscious recognition, in the part of the nervous system that stored the things learned before language, before deliberate memory, before the self that did the remembering had fully assembled. That part of her heard the name and knew it.
Not the way she knew her reflection in a mirror: observed, external, a thing she looked at from outside. The way she knew the feeling of breathing. Inside. Already hers.
She stood up straight. Rowan released her elbow immediately. She looked at him.
"What did you call me?"
His face had undergone a rapid sequence of adjustments. The instinctive reaching — the name, spoken without decision — followed by the awareness of what he had said, followed by something complicated that she could not fully read. Regret, she thought. And fear. And underneath both, something that looked, surprisingly, like relief.
"I didn't say anything," he said.
His voice was steady. His face was not.
"You said a name," Grace said. She kept her voice the same — level, not accusatory, the voice she used when she wanted information more than she wanted to express her reaction to the absence of it. "It wasn't Grace and it wasn't Velmira."
Rowan looked at the path between them. He was deciding something, and the deciding was visible, which was unusual for him — usually he had finished deciding before he showed anything.
"You heard wrong," he said. "The acoustics in here sometimes —"
"Mr. Ashmere."
He stopped.
"I didn't hear wrong," she said, very quietly. "I know I didn't hear wrong because of what the hearing did. It wasn't — it wasn't like hearing a stranger's name. It was —" She paused, searching for the precision. "It was like hearing my own name."
The Glass Garden was quiet around them. Somewhere near the front, water moved through the irrigation system — a low, continuous sound.
Rowan looked at her for a long time. The deciding was still happening. She waited for it.
"Not here," he said finally. Low. "Not now. I need —" He stopped. "Give me time."
"How much time?"
"A few days." His jaw was set. "I need to talk to — there's something I need to check first. Before I say anything that can't be unsaid."
Grace looked at him. At the lines of his face — the weathered quality of outdoor work, the specific exhaustion of a person carrying something for a long time without being able to put it down. She thought about Mira's observation: *he looks at you like he's checking. Making sure you're still there.*
"All right," she said. "A few days."
She walked back down the main path toward the manor door. At the threshold she did not look back.
But she heard, behind her, the sound of Rowan sitting down heavily on the stone path — not falling, just sitting down as if his legs had decided the work was done. And she heard, very faintly, something that might have been the sound of a person who had been holding their breath for a very long time and had finally, despite themselves, let it go.
---
In her room, she sat at the desk and wrote the name on a piece of paper.
Liora.
Three syllables. An L at the start, which began high in the mouth and came down — she had written, weeks ago, trying to catch the memory fragment from the Glass Garden: *something with an L. Something that began higher in the mouth and came down.* She had been right. She had been writing toward it without knowing the destination.
She looked at the name on the paper for a long time.
It did not feel like a foreign word. It did not feel like a piece of information she had learned. It felt — and she was a person who was careful with her verbs, who did not use *felt* when she meant *thought* or *observed* — it felt like something that had been in her all along, stored in the same place as breathing and balance and the knowledge of her own hands, waiting in a language older than the name Grace, older than the signature practice, older than the role of Grace Velmira.
Somebody had given her that name. And then somebody had taken it away.
She folded the paper. Placed it with the others in the back of her writing case.
Then she picked up her pen and began, very carefully, to think about what it meant that someone had considered it necessary to take a name away from a child.
