She gave herself two days to build the full picture before she brought it to anyone.
This was, she recognised, a departure from her usual method: she had been operating, since arriving at Ravencroft, in a mode of almost immediate sharing — finding something, then going to Cassian or Mira, then finding the next thing. The pace of the investigation had not, until now, required that she step back and see the whole.
But she had the name now. She had Liora on a piece of paper in the back of her writing case, next to the other pieces of paper, and the name had changed the shape of the investigation. Before Liora, she had been building a picture of a system — an external structure, the Grace mechanism, a thing done to multiple women. After Liora, she was building a picture of something done specifically to her. That was a different kind of investigation. It required a different kind of thoroughness.
So she spent two days in her room with the door closed and the papers spread on the writing desk, constructing the timeline in full.
---
The records room visits, systematically reconstructed from memory.
She had a strong memory for what she read — stronger than most people, which was a capacity she had exercised and developed since childhood without understanding, until recently, why it had been specifically encouraged. She could reproduce the essential information of each document she had examined with sufficient accuracy to build a working record.
She wrote it out in sequence. The Winter Rose agreements, by date. The Velmira signatures, by the handwriting characteristics she had identified. The gaps.
Gap one: 1743 to 1749. Six years. The agreement series resumed in 1749 with a signature that had the trained characteristics but was slightly different in the specific angle of the final letter — the way she had described it to herself, at the time, as the handover.
Gap two: 1783 to 1786. Three years. Similar characteristics in the resumption.
Gap three: approximately twelve years ago. She wrote: *transition to current predecessor.* She did not have a name for this person yet. The handwriting in the agreements following this gap was different from the one before, and different from hers — trained to the same standard, but a different hand beneath the training.
And then: Elowen Marst's period. Approximately four years ago.
Grace sat back and looked at the timeline.
Four transitions she could identify. Four moments where one Grace had ended and another had begun. Three before Elowen, one at Elowen's departure or death or disappearance — whatever it had actually been.
And then herself.
She was the fifth. Or perhaps the sixth, if there had been a predecessor she hadn't identified in the records. The fifth she could document.
---
She added what she knew from other sources.
The music box melody — unidentified, but producing a pre-linguistic response. Stored before deliberate memory. Which meant before approximately age three, when deliberate memory formation typically began, or during a period of significant disruption when normal memory formation had been compromised.
Rowan's name. Liora. The physical recognition — body memory rather than cognitive. Which meant repeated use, sustained over time, during a period before she had the language to deliberate about names or identities.
Draven Holt's pharmaceutical preparation. The specific questions he had asked about symptoms consistent with neurological aromatic exposure. The fact that Cassian had known she might be susceptible, and the further fact that he had framed this as "information about what was done to her" rather than information about her.
She drew the implication slowly, because implications drawn slowly were more reliable than implications drawn quickly.
Something had been done to her involving Winter Rose extract — the pharmaceutical preparation, the highest-concentration form, the form that Draven Holt managed personally. It had been done during a period she did not remember clearly, if at all. The result was that she had a name she didn't know she had, a melody her body remembered but her mind didn't, and memory fragments that required the plant's influence to surface.
The timeline and the implication sat on the paper together.
Grace looked at them for a long time. She was not afraid, exactly — she had moved past the initial cold shock of the name and had arrived somewhere that felt, unexpectedly, more like clarity. Knowing that something had been done to you was terrible. It was also, in a specific way, more manageable than the sense that the wrongness had no external cause.
Something had been done. Therefore, there was a who and a when and a why. And those were questions she could find the answers to.
---
She took the timeline to Cassian on the morning of the third day.
Not the full version — she had learned, in two weeks of working alongside him in this investigation, that flooding him with information produced the same protective reduction as pressure did. She gave him the essential structure: the four transitions, the approximate dates, the handwriting evidence, the gap twelve years ago that preceded what she was now calling, to herself, the immediate predecessor period.
Cassian listened from his position at the library table with the complete attention that was, she had come to understand, one of his genuine qualities — he was a person who, when he was listening, was truly listening, not managing a response. He did not interrupt. He did not look away.
When she finished, he was quiet for long enough that she noticed.
"The gap twelve years ago," he said. "You don't have a name for the person in that period."
"No."
"I do."
Grace looked at him.
"Her name was Cecily Marne," he said. "She was here for approximately three years. She died of a fever — that is the official cause. I have reasons to doubt the official cause."
"What do your reasons tell you?"
A pause. "That the fever was real. That what produced the fever may not have been natural."
Grace sat with this. "And before Cecily Marne?"
"I have names going further back. I've been building a record for —" He stopped. "For several years."
"You've been investigating this yourself."
He met her eyes. "Yes."
"For how long?"
"Since my father died. Since I understood enough about what Ravencroft had been participating in to know it needed to stop."
Grace looked at the timeline she had brought him. Then at the table surface. Then back at him.
"And you needed someone to play the role while you investigated," she said. Very quietly. Not yet — she was not yet ready to go where that sentence led, not in this conversation, not without more of the picture. But she wanted him to know she had seen it.
He did not look away. "Yes," he said. "Among other things."
"Give me the rest," she said. "What do you need before you can?"
"Two more things," he said. "I need to find Cecily Marne's file — the full one, not the official version. And I need to know where a specific document has been moved to." A pause. "The document that identifies the person who initiated the most recent iteration of the Grace system. The person who is currently running it."
Grace looked at him. "You don't know who's running it."
"I know some of the structure. I don't yet have the name at the top."
"But you have a theory."
A long pause. "I have a very strong suspicion," he said. "I would rather give you certainty than suspicion."
Grace looked at her timeline. At the names she had — the gaps, the handovers, the pattern built from records and fragments and a name spoken in a cold glass garden.
"All right," she said. "Then I have something to do while you're finding those two things."
"What?"
She stood, picked up the timeline. "Rowan Ashmere asked me for a few days. Those days are nearly up. And I think what he knows," she said, "is something neither of us has yet."
She went to the door. At the threshold she turned back — partly because she wanted the information and partly because she wanted to see his face when she gave it.
"The name," she said. "The one Rowan called me in the Garden. It was Liora." She paused. "Does that name mean anything to you?"
Cassian went still in the specific way she had catalogued as significant — not the general stillness, but the particular arrest of movement that indicated a specific response being managed.
"Yes," he said, after a moment. Just the one word.
"Then we'll talk about it," she said, "when you have the file and the document. And when I've spoken to Rowan." She paused. "And when neither of us has to be careful about how much the other knows."
She went back to the East Wing.
Behind her, she did not hear him move for a long time.
