Three days after the Glass Garden, Mira moved a chair.
This was not remarkable in itself — Mira moved furniture regularly as part of the work of maintaining a room, and Grace had long since learned to trust that the results of Mira's reorganisations were improvements rather than rearrangements for their own sake. What was remarkable was that this particular chair, moved to air the window behind it, caught its leg on the baseboard trim in the way that furniture caught on things when the flooring beneath was slightly uneven — and the flooring in the east room was, apparently, slightly uneven in a specific location, because when Mira pulled the chair back and looked at what the leg had found, she discovered that the unevenness was caused by the edge of a document that had been placed under the room's main carpet, which was an old carpet and thick and had been there long enough that the document under it had been forgotten by everyone except the person who had put it there.
Mira came to find Grace in the library.
"The floor did something," she said, with the particular precision she used when the more natural phrasing would have sounded stranger than the event warranted.
---
The carpet was old — a heavy, dark-patterned thing, the kind of carpet that had been bought for quality rather than fashion and had accordingly been in place long enough to become architectural. Lifting the edge of it required both of them. Beneath the turned-back section: floorboards, a faint pattern of dust in the areas the carpet hadn't compressed, and the document.
It was not paper. It was the heavier material — vellum, or something close to it — folded multiple times, creased with the specific pattern of something folded long ago and left that way. The ink was not faded, which suggested the covering of the carpet had protected it from light. The drawing was precise: lines, measurements, notations in a small, architectural hand.
A floor plan.
Grace unfolded it carefully on the writing desk. It was the manor's ground floor, drawn at a scale that encompassed the full structure — she could orient herself immediately from the main entrance, The Thorn Hall, the south corridor, the Glass Garden footprint. The drawing was older than the current manor configuration: some of the room designations were different, some of the partition walls shown didn't match what she knew of the current layout, and the garden structure was shown in an earlier form, without the extension to the west that currently existed.
She traced the familiar outlines: the Glass Garden, the south corridor junction, the west wing, the east wing where she was standing. And then, at the south end of the Glass Garden, where the current floor plan showed only the continued garden space:
A sub-level.
Marked in the architectural shorthand for below-grade construction — dashed lines, a different notation convention than the main floor. The room was approximately the size of a large study, positioned directly beneath what she now knew as the experimental growing section. Access marked by a staircase descending from the north end of the section.
Beside the dashed outline, in the same small architectural hand: *Lower Glasshouse.*
Grace stood very still with the floor plan in her hands.
She had been expecting this — had been building toward it, had the name already from the records room, had the approximate location from contextual reasoning. But seeing it drawn, precise, with measurements, made it real in a different way than expectation made things real. The Lower Glasshouse existed. It was below her. It had existed in the original construction of the manor.
And it was not on any map that the current household used.
---
She took the plan to Cassian.
He was in the east courtyard, in conversation with the estate manager about something that involved a set of ledgers and a disagreement that she did not have the context to interpret. She waited at the courtyard entrance until the conversation concluded and the estate manager went back toward the administrative offices. Then she crossed to where Cassian was standing and held out the floor plan without preamble.
He took it. Looked at it.
His expression did not change in the ways that indicated surprise — there was no alteration in the configuration around his eyes, no involuntary movement in the jaw. What changed was smaller: a slight settling, the specific quality of a person receiving expected confirmation rather than unexpected information.
"Where did you find this?" he asked.
"Under the carpet in the east room. Mira found it." A pause. "How long has it been there?"
He turned the plan, examining the notations. "Long enough to be forgotten. The carpet in that room was laid when my grandfather was master here." His thumb moved along the edge of the vellum, testing its age. "This is older than that. Probably original construction."
"Who put it under the carpet?"
"I don't know." He looked at the sub-level markings. "Someone who wanted it to exist but not to be found easily." A pause. "Or who wanted it to be found, eventually, by someone who was looking."
Grace considered this. "You've been in the Lower Glasshouse."
It was not a question. He did not answer it as one.
"Yes," he said.
"What's there?"
He folded the plan — along the original creases, with a care that suggested habit. "Records. Equipment. Evidence of what the lower level was used for." A pause. "I've been trying to find a specific set of files that I believe are there. I haven't been able to access the full inventory yet."
"Why not?"
"Because the records are organised in a system I don't entirely understand. It was maintained by someone else, and the organisation reflects priorities I'm still reconstructing."
Grace looked at him. "Draven Holt."
"The previous physician. Before Holt. And Holt himself, in more recent years."
She thought about the pharmaceutical preparation. About the specific questions Draven had asked on her first evening. About Cassian's response to those questions.
"The files you're looking for," she said. "They're related to what was done to me."
He met her eyes. "Yes."
"To the memory suppression."
"I believe so. Yes."
Grace looked at the folded plan in his hands. At the creases along the fold lines, the precision of the original draughtsmanship visible even in the folded state. Someone had made this plan with care. Someone had placed it where it could be found, someday, by someone looking.
"I want to go in," she said.
"I know."
"When?"
He looked at the plan. Then at her. The evaluation was present, but it was different from the early version of it — less assessment of an unknown quantity, more the consideration of a person deciding how much protection was still necessary.
"Give me two days," he said. "I want to find the specific files before you see the rest of the inventory. So you have context."
"Two days," she said. "Then I go with or without the context."
He looked at her for a long moment. Then: "Two days. I'll find them."
She nodded. He kept the floor plan, which she allowed because she had already memorised it, and she went back to the East Wing with the specific restlessness of a person who knows where the answer is and has agreed to wait two days before reaching for it.
---
In the evening, she sat at the window of her room and looked out at the Glass Garden roof.
She had been at Ravencroft for nearly three weeks. In three weeks, she had identified the Grace system, reconstructed its approximate history, found Elowen's diary and her warning and the music box with the melody her body remembered and couldn't name. She had established that Cassian had known what she was before she arrived and was investigating the same thing from a different angle. She had a name that felt like hers in her body before it felt like hers in her mind.
And she had a man who had sat beside her in the moonlight and turned his face away before something irrevocable happened, and had said *things you will not forgive* as a fact and not a deflection.
She was aware, with the part of her mind that observed her own states as well as external ones, that the investigation and the relationship with Cassian had become difficult to separate. She was looking for the truth about herself, and he was connected to that truth, and the connection meant that her feelings about the truth and her feelings about him were not independent variables. She could not pretend otherwise and she did not intend to.
What she could do was hold both — the investigation and the complication of him — without letting one compromise the other. She had been holding complicated things in both hands for most of her life.
She looked at the Glass Garden roof. The moonlight was coming in at a low angle, the frost on the outer glass catching it and diffusing it into a general cold luminescence.
Two more days.
She turned from the window and went to her writing desk and began to construct, in as much detail as she could produce from available evidence, a picture of what the Lower Glasshouse had been used for.
She worked until the small hours. When she finally stopped, she had four pages of notes and a picture that was incomplete but coherent. And at the centre of the picture, a question she had not yet been able to answer:
Who had placed the floor plan under the carpet?
Not Elowen — the carpet predated Elowen. Not any recent Grace. Someone earlier. Someone who had wanted the sub-level to be findable, someday, and had placed a document that would survive decades beneath the floor of the room where the Graces were kept.
She thought about the woman in the portrait in The Thorn Hall. Mid-turn. Looking directly out of the canvas with the awareness of someone who had understood something and was still trying to reach across the years to say it.
She did not know if that woman had put the floor plan under the carpet. She thought it was possible. She thought that if she ever found out, she would not be surprised.
