Cassian's two days passed without the files.
He told her this on the morning of the third day, in the corridor outside the library, with the specific quality of a man reporting a failure he had not anticipated and did not have a complete explanation for. The records in the Lower Glasshouse were more extensively cross-referenced than he had understood — the filing system reflected multiple users over many years, and certain files had been moved within the system in a way that disguised their location rather than simply obscuring it. He believed the specific files were there. He had not found them.
"I need more time," he said.
"You told me two days," Grace said. "Two days and I would go in with or without the context."
He looked at her. "I remember."
"Then you know what I'm going to do this morning."
A pause. "Yes."
Grace looked at him for a moment. "Are you going to try to stop me?"
He was quiet for slightly too long — not the silence of someone deciding whether to be honest, but the silence of someone deciding how to be honest. "No," he said. "I'm going to come with you."
---
The Glass Garden in the early morning had a different quality than any other time she had been in it — the light was still growing, the differential between the outer cold and the inner controlled temperature producing a slight misting along the lower panels, the Winter Rose in its partial dormancy holding the pale grey light in its petals in a way that was less luminous than the full daylight version and more austere. Beautiful in the specific way of things that were not trying to be beautiful.
Grace walked the main path at pace, Cassian two steps behind and then beside her as the path widened. She did not speak. Neither did he. The ambient tingling was present at its usual low level, and she had learned to wear it as background — a constant of this environment, like the controlled cold, like the smell.
The experimental section at the back was quiet, the small beds in their winter state. Rowan was not here yet — early still, earlier than his usual start. She was glad of that. She did not want this particular entry witnessed.
She found the staircase door on the third sweep of the back wall: set into the base of the iron support structure in a way that used the structure itself as the door frame, disguising the seam. The handle was a section of the structural iron that had been fitted with a pivot mechanism — it looked, unless you were looking for it, like decorative detail. She had been looking for it.
She pressed. The door opened inward and down.
---
The staircase was narrow, with the ceiling height of a working passage rather than a habitable space: functional, not hostile, designed for access rather than comfort. The walls were stone — below the Glass Garden's foundation level, with the specific quality of underground stone that held cold differently than above-grade construction. She felt the change in temperature as she descended: slightly warmer than the Glass Garden above, the earth having insulated the space from the winter extremes.
Light came from a series of small glass panels set into the ceiling at regular intervals — an arrangement that allowed diffuse natural light from the Glass Garden above to filter down, creating a quality of illumination that was grey and even and sufficient without any direct source. At night, she understood, the space would be fully dark. At this hour, it was navigable.
The Lower Glasshouse was larger than she had anticipated from the floor plan.
Not dramatically larger — the plan had been accurate in its footprint. But the ceiling was higher than she had expected, and the height combined with the diffuse light created a volume that felt more significant than its dimensions. Along the south and west walls: shelving, from floor to near-ceiling, in the heavy timber that indicated original construction. The shelves held — she moved along them, reading, cataloguing — a mixture of preserved botanical specimens, equipment in various states of currency, and files. Many files. Organised in a system that she could already see was not a simple chronological archive.
Along the central space: two long worktables, clear of material, their surfaces marked with the chemical staining and heat scoring of sustained active use over many years. Not recent use — the accumulation pattern suggested years of disuse following years of heavy activity. On the east wall: a cabinet, locked, smaller than the main shelving, clearly distinguished from the general archive by its lock and by its position separate from the main system.
And in the corner nearest the staircase, where the light from the ceiling panels was at its strongest:
A chair.
Grace saw it from the entrance of the space and walked toward it before she had fully processed what had arrested her attention. Small — the scale of a child's piece, not a full adult piece, the proportions unmistakable. Wood, old, with the quality of something made rather than manufactured: hand-fitted joints, a specific style of spindle-back that she associated with practical rural furniture of several generations ago. The seat cushion was gone, the supports worn to a smooth grey at the places where hands had held the frame to move it.
She crouched in front of it.
The back panel, where the spindles met the top rail, was where she looked first. The wood was dark with age, and the carving was small — not decorative, utilitarian, the kind of marking that people put on things to identify ownership. Two letters, cut with something sharp, in a hand that was not adult. Slightly uneven depth, the pressure varying across the strokes, the spacing slightly wide as if the person had been unsure how much room each letter would take.
*L.V.*
She put her fingers on the carving. The cuts were deep enough that she could feel each letter through her fingertips — the L, with its two strokes; the period or dot between; the V, which had been cut with more confidence than the L, the strokes meeting at the bottom with a precision that suggested it had been practiced.
L.V. Liora Vale. She did not know the Vale yet — that would come. But the L she knew. The L she had heard Rowan speak in the Garden, had felt land in her body like something returning to its place.
She was kneeling in front of a chair that a child had carved her own initials into. She was that child. She did not have the full picture yet, but she had this: the chair, the initials, the underground room, the fact of her presence here in a space that had been kept from her since she arrived.
"L.V.," she said. Barely a sound.
Not to Cassian. To the chair. To the child who had sat in it, who had been here, who had carved these letters into the wood with the confidence of someone claiming something — *this is mine, I was here, I existed here.*
---
She heard him on the staircase.
She stood before she fully decided to. Not because she was ashamed to have been kneeling — she was not — but because the movement from kneeling to standing was, she found, necessary. She needed to be on her feet for whatever came next.
Cassian reached the bottom of the stairs and stopped.
He looked at her. Then at the chair. Then back at her.
In his face, she saw something she had not seen before: not the controlled evaluation, not the near-expression, not the specific exhaustion of a man carrying something long-held. Something more immediate than any of those. Something that she thought, if she had to name it, she would call the expression of a man who has run out of the time he was hoping to have.
The pretense was done. He knew it and she knew it and the chair between them knew it and none of them were going to pretend otherwise.
"The files," Grace said. Her voice was level. She was making it level, and she was making it level quite deliberately, because level was what she needed right now. "The ones you were looking for. They're about her. About the child who sat in this chair."
He came down the last step. Did not move toward her. Just stood at the foot of the staircase with the Lower Glasshouse around him and the chair between them and the particular quality of a man standing in the specific position where there is nothing left to manage.
"Yes," he said.
"Tell me what you know," she said. "Not what you've decided I'm ready for. What you know."
The diffuse light from the ceiling panels fell on them both, even and grey. The Lower Glasshouse was very quiet.
Cassian looked at the chair. Then at her. Then at the floor plan he still had in his coat pocket — she could see the edge of it.
"Not yet," he said. But the quality was different now. Not the measured delay of a man controlling the pace of information. The voice of a man for whom *not yet* meant something specific and proximate and real. "Not because I'm not going to. Because I need to find the files first. So that when I tell you, I can tell you everything and not just what I carry in my head."
Grace looked at the chair. At the initials. At the two letters a child had cut into the wood of something that was hers in a space that had been kept from her for years.
"How long?" she asked.
"Days. Not weeks." He met her eyes. "I promise you."
She held his gaze for a long moment.
"All right," she said. "Days."
And then she turned back to the chair and crouched again and put both hands flat on the seat — old wood, cold, real — and stayed there for a moment with her palms on the surface where a child had sat, a child she was, a child she was going to find.
