The morning they left Velmira House, it rained.
Not dramatically — not the kind of rain that announced itself with thunder and made people say things like *of course* and look meaningfully at the sky. Just a steady, grey, purposeful rain, the kind that had decided it was going to happen regardless of anyone's feelings about it and was going to continue until it had finished. Grace watched it from the window of her room while Mira moved around behind her, closing the last of the trunks.
"That's everything," Mira said. "Unless you want to bring the calligraphy set from the desk."
"Leave it."
"The pressed flower specimens in the bottom drawer?"
"Leave those too."
Mira appeared at her shoulder in the window glass — dark curly hair, practical expression, the particular look she wore when she was deciding whether to say something. "You're sure? You spent three months on those specimens."
"I spent three months on them in this house," Grace said. "I don't need to carry them into the next one."
Mira was quiet for a moment. Then: "All right."
It was one of the things Grace valued about Mira — she knew when to stop pressing. Most people, when they decided to be kind to Grace, kept at it past the point of usefulness, offering reassurances and alternatives and reasons why things might not be as they seemed. Mira had learned, through some instinct Grace was grateful for, that what Grace generally wanted from other people was to be treated as someone who had already assessed the situation and did not require help arriving at an emotion.
---
The walk through the house before leaving took longer than it needed to.
Grace did not plan it that way. She had intended to go directly from her room to the front hall, down the steps, into the carriage. Efficient. The way she did most things. But she found herself turning toward the east corridor instead, and then toward the small room at the end of it where she had spent most of her childhood in lessons, and she stood in the doorway of that room for longer than was strictly necessary and looked at it.
A desk. Two chairs. A bookshelf with the reference volumes still standing in their places — botanical encyclopaedias, perfumery texts, a complete history of Elyndorian social law, a guide to the formal correspondence conventions of the upper houses. On the desk, a stack of clean paper and a jar of good ink.
She had sat at that desk for most of her remembered life. Six days a week, from the age of five or six — she did not remember exactly when the lessons began, only that they had always been there, as fundamental as eating and sleeping. Writing. Scent identification. The precise and proper formation of letters. The rules of address, the rules of occasion, the rules of what to say and when to say nothing. The correct angle of a curtsy for a duke versus an earl versus a man of new money with a title he had purchased.
At the time, she had thought it was an education. The children of good houses were educated this way — comprehensively, rigorously, with emphasis on the social and diplomatic skills that would make them useful members of their station.
Standing in the doorway now, about to leave for a marriage she had not known she was contracted to, she thought: useful. That was the word, wasn't it. The education had been designed, very carefully and very thoroughly, to make her useful.
Not accomplished. Not curious. Not capable of independent action. Useful.
She stood there until Mira appeared at her elbow and said, gently, "The carriage is ready."
Grace took one more look at the room. Then she turned and walked away from it without looking back, because looking back was not, she had decided, going to help.
---
Adrian was waiting in the front hall.
He had dressed carefully — that was the first thing she noticed. He was always well-dressed, but today he had taken particular care, as if the formality of his appearance could stand in for the formality of an occasion he didn't have the right words for. He held her hands when she came to him, and his grip was warm and real, and he looked at her with the expression she knew best from him: love and helplessness in the same proportion.
"Write to me," he said. "As soon as you arrive."
"I will."
"If anything — if it's intolerable, or if he —" He stopped. Pressed his lips together. "I will find a way to bring you home. You know that."
"I know," Grace said.
She did know. She also knew, with the part of her mind that catalogued such things quietly and without comment, that "finding a way to bring her home" was a promise Adrian had the emotional sincerity to make and the practical limitations to never fulfil. But she held his hands and she meant it when she said she knew, because she did know — she knew exactly what he was able to offer, and she had calibrated her expectations accordingly, and she was not going to make either of them feel worse by drawing attention to the gap.
He hugged her at the door. She let herself rest in it for a moment — genuinely, not as performance. He was real, her feeling for him was real, the grief of leaving was real. She was very good at holding real things and complicated things in the same two hands.
Then she stepped back. Picked up her travelling case. Went down the front steps into the rain.
---
The carriage was a good one — House Ravencroft had sent it, which Grace noted as information about the level of formality they were operating at. Four horses, a coachman and a footman, Ravencroft livery in black and dark silver. She and Mira settled into the interior, which was well-appointed and cold in the way of enclosed spaces that had been prepared rather than inhabited.
Mira produced a blanket from one of the bags with the efficiency of someone who had anticipated the cold and prepared for it as a matter of course. Grace accepted it without comment. Outside the window, Velmira House receded as the carriage pulled through the gate and turned north.
They rode in silence for a while. The rain continued its purposeful business against the carriage roof.
Then the coachman, audible through the speaking panel, said something to the footman. A short exchange. Grace caught the words *Ravencroft* and *Manor* and, faintly, *poor girl.*
Mira had heard it too. Grace saw her expression shift — the slight tightening at the corners that meant she was deciding whether to intervene.
"It's fine," Grace said quietly.
"He shouldn't —"
"Mira." A pause. "Let him talk."
Mira subsided. They listened.
The coachman had opinions about Ravencroft Manor. He had been driving carriages in Aurelith and the surrounding routes for thirty years, he said, and he had driven more than a few young women to that gate, and he had never liked the job. There was something wrong with the place — everyone said so. The Glass Garden, the roses that bloomed in winter, the story of the last girl, the one who had died. Cassian Ravencroft, who was cold enough to freeze the stones, and everyone knew what had happened to the Marst girl, and it was a shame, that's all, a shame to send another one there.
*Another one,* Grace noted. Not *a girl.* Another one.
She looked out the window at the passing countryside — fields stripped bare by winter, the sky a uniform grey that seemed to begin just above the rooftops. She thought about what it meant that a coachman with thirty years on this route found the sending of a girl to Ravencroft unremarkable enough to have opinions about. Not unusual. Not a singular event. Just a thing that had happened more than once, and would probably happen again.
She had not thought about Cassian Ravencroft very much since Lord Maeron's announcement. There had been too many other things to think about — the contract, the signatures, the logistics of departure. But she thought about him now, in the grey light of the carriage, with the rain coming down and the coachman's voice filtering through the panel.
What kind of man, she wondered. Not in the way she had wondered as a girl, reading about fictional lords and their fictional mysteries. In the specific, practical way she wondered about any new environment she was going to have to navigate: what were the rules here, what mattered, where were the gaps.
What kind of man. And more to the point: what kind of man had a reputation severe enough that thirty-year coachmen mentioned it with the weight of settled fact.
---
The carriage stopped at a posting inn in the early afternoon, to rest the horses and take the midday meal. Grace and Mira ate in the private room the footman had arranged — adequate food, warm enough, nobody looking at them. Grace was grateful for the anonymity.
While Mira went to see about tea, an old man at the bar — not a coachman, something else, a local farmer perhaps, with the look of someone who had lived in one place long enough to have opinions about everything that bordered it — glanced at the Ravencroft livery on the footman still visible through the window and said something to his companion.
Grace could only hear part of it. Something about the Manor. Something about the roses. And then, clearly:
*"Another bride for Ravencroft. God help her."*
His companion murmured something.
*"The last one didn't last long enough to find out what she'd married into,"* the old man said. *"That's what the Glass Garden does. It takes them. Every time."*
Grace wrapped both hands around her cup of tea and looked at the surface of the liquid.
Another bride. Every time.
The phrase settled in her chest with the particular weight of information that rearranged other information around it.
---
The manor appeared in the late afternoon.
Grace saw it before Mira did — she had been watching for it, the way she watched for everything she was approaching, because knowledge of terrain was the most basic form of preparation. The carriage topped a low rise, and there it was: Ravencroft Manor, north of the city, set against the cliff-face like something that had grown there rather than been built.
Not what she had expected. Not the crumbling dark tower of the coachman's stories. It was large and precise and deliberately beautiful — stone the colour of dark grey water, high windows that caught the late light and held it, a long line of glass along the rear that she understood must be the famous garden. No weeds. No disorder. Everything controlled.
*Like a very well-kept cage,* a part of her thought.
She did not share this observation with Mira.
The carriage passed through the gate, and the gate closed behind them, and Grace looked out the back window at it and thought: *I came here under my own name. I will leave under my own name.* She was not sure yet what that meant, or what it would cost, or how she was going to manage it. But the decision felt important enough to make before she arrived, before the weight of the place and the people in it could press down on her and make everything complicated.
Her name. The name she had always had.
Her hand had signed it ten thousand times in practice on ten thousand sheets of paper.
She was beginning to wonder, for the first time, whether that made it more hers or less.
