The front steps of Ravencroft Manor were exactly the right width.
Grace noticed this immediately, in the way she noticed architectural details that communicated intention: the steps were wide enough for two people to ascend side by side, narrow enough that the person ascending alone felt the absence of a companion. Not an accident. The whole front face of the manor had the same quality — beautiful, precise, and quietly inhospitable in a way that would be difficult to explain to someone who hadn't felt it.
She went up the steps alone, Mira a half-pace behind, and the front doors opened before she reached them. A butler — older, silver-haired, face arranged in the specific blankness of a senior household staff member who had been doing this long enough to feel nothing about any of it — offered her a formal welcome in the name of House Ravencroft and the name of Lord Cassian Ravencroft specifically, and led them inside.
The entrance hall was tall and cold and almost entirely white. White stone floors, white plastered walls, white flowers — she recognised them from descriptions: Winter Rose, the famous Winter Rose, arranged in low vases along the side tables with the care of something precious. They were beautiful. They smelled faintly sweet, with something underneath the sweetness that she couldn't identify, that made the inside of her nose feel slightly strange.
She did not touch them.
---
The Thorn Hall.
This was what she had read about — the gallery of portraits that stretched the full length of the manor's east wing, two storeys high, lit by a long row of high windows that in the grey afternoon light produced the particular quality of illumination that made painted faces look more alive than they had any right to be. The butler led them through it, and Grace walked and looked, and catalogued.
The Ravencroft men were easy to read: generation after generation of dark hair, formal dress, the same quality of stillness in the painted faces that she had already identified as a family characteristic rather than an artistic choice. Each portrait had a name plate — full name, dates, a line of text noting the tenure or achievement for which the portrait had been commissioned.
The women beside them were different.
Some had full name plates — names she didn't recognise, from houses she would have to look up. Others had partial plates: first name, married name, dates. But some — and this was the thing that Grace's attention snagged on and would not release — some had name plates that were wrong. Not empty. Wrong. The plates were there, but the text had been removed — scraped away, she thought, or painted over, leaving the faint ghost of letters under the surface if you looked at the right angle in the right light.
Five. She counted five portraits of women whose names had been removed.
The frames were intact. The portraits themselves were intact — the faces still visible, the dresses still detailed. Only the names were gone.
Grace looked at the faces as she passed. Most were painted in the convention of the period — idealised, composed, looking slightly off to one side of the viewer. But one — a woman in a pale dress, painted mid-turn as if she had been caught in the act of leaving — was looking directly out of the canvas. Directly at whoever stood in front of her.
Grace stopped.
The woman in the portrait had been young — younger than Grace was now. The expression on her face was not the conventional composure of a formal portrait. It was something else. Something that might have been, if you were inclined to read it that way, a warning.
"Lady Velmira?"
Grace realised the butler had stopped and was looking back at her. She resumed walking.
"The portraits are very fine," she said. "Who are the artists?"
The butler named several. Grace listened and filed the names away and did not ask about the scraped name plates, because asking about them in the first ten minutes of her arrival would accomplish nothing except alerting everyone that she had noticed. She had noticed. That was enough for now.
---
Lady Seraphine Ravencroft was waiting in the blue drawing room.
Grace had prepared herself, in a general way, for a cold reception. She had not prepared herself for this particular quality of coldness, which was not hostile — nothing so easy as hostile — but rather the coldness of a person performing warmth with complete technical accuracy and no warmth behind it at all. Lady Seraphine was beautiful in the way the manor was beautiful: precisely, deliberately, with no room left for accident.
"Miss Velmira." The inflection was perfect. "We are very glad you have arrived safely."
"Thank you, Lady Seraphine. The journey was comfortable."
"I hope you will find Ravencroft comfortable as well." The Lady looked at her — not assessing, not curious. The look of a person checking that a delivery had arrived in the correct condition. "You'll want to rest before dinner. I'll have you shown to your rooms."
"That's very kind."
The words passed between them like objects being handed across a counter. Functional. Correct. Absolutely without content.
Grace smiled. Lady Seraphine smiled. They both knew exactly what they were doing.
---
The East Wing.
Grace had expected to be placed there — it was the traditional guest accommodation, according to everything she had read about the manor's layout before leaving Velmira House. What she had not expected was the specific quality of the rooms: clean, well-appointed, everything in order, and yet bearing the unmistakable atmosphere of a space that had been recently and hastily prepared rather than continuously maintained.
The furniture was good but the cushions were too fresh. The flowers in the vase had been arranged in the last day or two. There were small gaps on the mantelpiece where objects had been removed — the rings in the dust were faint but visible if you looked.
Somebody had been in this room before her. Not long before her. And something had been cleared out.
"Nice," said Mira, from behind her, in the tone that meant the opposite.
"It's adequate," Grace said.
"The wardrobe smells like someone else's perfume."
"Open the window for an hour. It'll clear."
Mira opened the window. Outside, the grounds of Ravencroft were visible — the formal garden to the south, and beyond it, the long gleam of the glasshouse roof catching the last of the afternoon light. The Glass Garden. Even from here, even through the open window with the cold coming in, Grace thought she could detect the faint sweetness of it.
She went to stand beside Mira and look out.
"That's it?" Mira asked.
"That's it."
They looked at it for a moment. It was large — larger than she had expected, extending back further than the main house, the glass panels fog-hazed from within.
"It doesn't look cursed," Mira offered.
"No," Grace agreed. "It doesn't."
---
The incident with the maid happened near the end of the evening.
Grace had been exploring the permissible parts of the wing — she had established which doors were locked and which were merely closed, which corridors connected to which, where the servants' stairs were and how they related to the main staircase. It was the kind of mapping she did automatically in any new space, the way some people upon entering a room looked for the most comfortable seat and she looked for all the exits.
A young maid came around a corner carrying a stack of fresh linens and stopped short when she saw Grace.
The girl was perhaps sixteen. She had the look of someone new to the household — not yet settled into the impassivity that long service produced. Her eyes went wide for a moment, and then, before she could stop it, something escaped her:
"Oh — the next Grace is here."
Silence.
The girl's face went through several expressions very quickly. She bobbed a curtsy — too deep, too rushed. "I beg your pardon, miss — my lady — I meant to say, Lady Velmira, I —"
"It's quite all right," Grace said. Her voice was calm. She had made it calm. "You needn't apologise."
The girl escaped down the corridor with the linens held against her chest like a shield. Grace watched her go.
*The next Grace.*
Not *the new Lady Ravencroft.* Not *the bride.* Not even *the Velmira girl.* The next Grace. As if Grace were a role. A position. Something that was filled and refilled.
Grace stood in the corridor and turned the phrase over in her hands, examining it from every angle, the way she examined the strange signatures in the archive of her mind, the way she had been examining the scraped name plates in The Thorn Hall.
Behind her, she heard Mira's footstep.
"I heard," Mira said quietly.
"I know."
A pause. "What does it mean?"
Grace looked down the empty corridor — the one the maid had fled down, the one that led back into the main body of the house. Somewhere in that house was the answer to that question. She was fairly certain of it. She was also fairly certain that the answer was not going to be offered to her voluntarily.
"I don't know yet," she said. "I'm going to find out."
---
She went back to The Thorn Hall after the house had gone quiet.
Late — past midnight, when the staff had retreated to their quarters and the corridors were empty and the only light was the cold moonlight coming through the high windows. She took a candle and went alone, without telling Mira, because this felt like the kind of thing she needed to do without a witness.
The portraits were different at night. The moonlight came in at an angle that flattened the faces into something older and stranger. The Ravencroft men in their frames looked less like lords and more like men who had been carrying something heavy for a very long time.
Grace walked the length of the gallery slowly, looking at the women.
She stopped at the five with the scraped name plates. Held her candle close to the frames and looked at the plates themselves — not the text, or rather the absence of text. The quality of the removal. Patient, deliberate work. Not vandalism. Not done in anger. Done carefully, over time, by someone who wanted the name gone but did not want to damage the frame.
She held her candle to the nearest one and looked at the angle where the paint caught the light differently.
There — the ghost of letters beneath. She could make out part of it: the tail of a G, she thought. And then — she shifted the candle — the curve of what might have been an r, and after that a c.
She stood very still.
Then she raised the candle to the next one. Different angle, different light. But the same shape under the paint. G. r. Something.
She did not check the others. She did not need to.
She walked back to her room in the dark with her candle and her understanding, and she sat on the edge of the bed, and she thought about the girl in the corridor. *The next Grace.* The next.
Five portraits. Five women whose names had been removed. And under the paint, in each frame, the ghost of the same name beginning.
Grace.
She had come here thinking she was a bride. She was beginning to understand that she was something else. Something that had existed in this house before her, more than once, in more than one body. A name. A function. A role that someone had needed filled, and had filled, and had then erased when the filling was done.
She lay down on the bed without undressing. Stared at the ceiling.
Somewhere in this house was a man who knew what she was looking at. A man who had invited her here knowing what she was looking at. A man who had, so far, chosen to tell her none of it.
Grace closed her eyes.
She was going to need to be very patient, and very careful, and very much more thorough than anyone in this house expected her to be.
She was, fortunately, all three of those things. She had been trained, after all. Very thoroughly.
She just hadn't been trained for this.
