He chose The Thorn Hall.
Grace had been told, through the butler, that Lord Ravencroft would receive her at ten o'clock in the morning. The butler had not specified where. She had assumed the formal receiving room — the obvious choice, the conventional choice, the room designed for exactly this kind of occasion. She had dressed accordingly: cream dress, good gloves, hair arranged with the precision that formal reception demanded. She had stood in front of her mirror and made herself into the correct version of herself, the version that walked into rooms and produced the right impressions.
The butler had led her to The Thorn Hall.
Cassian Ravencroft was standing at the far end of it, beneath the last portrait in the row — a large one, an older man with the same dark colouring and the same quality of stillness. He was not looking at the portrait. He was looking at her as she came in, and he had been looking at her since she appeared in the doorway, which she had noted because she could feel it. Some people had a particular quality of attention that announced itself before you could see them clearly.
He was not what she had expected.
She had assembled an image from the stories — the coldness, the reputation, the Thorn Heir, the man the noblewoman's daughters avoided at parties and the man the coachmen mentioned with the weight of settled fact. She had prepared for something overtly threatening, some version of dangerous that she could orient herself against.
Cassian Ravencroft was not overtly anything. He was tall — that was the first physical impression, that and the darkness of colouring, the blue of his eyes reading almost grey in the morning light of the gallery. He was dressed with the same precise control as everything else in this house: black coat, grey waistcoat, everything exactly right. He held himself with the particular stillness of a person who had learned long ago that stillness was a form of control.
What she had not expected was that he would look tired.
Not dramatically. Not in a way that most people would have noticed. But Grace was very good at looking at people and seeing the thing underneath the thing, and underneath Cassian Ravencroft's composure there was the specific exhaustion of a person who had been managing something difficult for a long time and had not had any relief from it.
She filed this away. It was information.
"Miss Velmira," he said. His voice was low and even, not particularly warm and not particularly cold — the voice of a person who had long since stopped putting effort into vocal performance.
"Lord Ravencroft."
She crossed the length of the gallery to meet him, and they stood at a proper social distance from each other, and they looked at each other in the way of two people who were both doing exactly the same thing: assessing.
---
He said his piece without preamble.
This marriage would be a formal arrangement. They would be required to appear together at certain social occasions — the specifics of which would be communicated in advance. They would be expected to behave with the appropriate degree of public civility. Beyond these requirements, she would have the freedom of the manor's common rooms and grounds, with the exception of the lower east wing and certain areas he would have the butler indicate.
He asked her if she had any questions about the practical arrangements.
Grace did not ask the practical questions. She had already extrapolated most of the practical arrangements from context.
"What do you mean by formal arrangement?" she asked instead. "And until when?"
A brief pause. Not surprise, she thought. More like the slight recalibration of a person who had prepared for a different question.
"Until the necessary family documentation is processed and finalised," he said. "The timeline depends on factors that are not fully in my control."
"What documentation?"
"Matters of property and contractual succession."
"Related to Winter Rose?"
He was quiet for a moment. Just long enough. "Among other things."
Grace looked at him steadily. He looked back at her. The quality of attention between them was different now — less mutual assessment, more something else. Something that felt like two people recognising that the other person was not going to make this simple.
"You're not going to give me specifics," she said. Not a question.
"Not at present."
"Because you don't have them, or because you've chosen not to?"
The corner of his mouth moved. Not quite a smile. The expression of a man who had been told he would find this simple and was finding it, in fact, not simple at all. "Because the full picture is complicated, and the value of sharing it at this stage is unclear."
"Unclear to whom?"
"To me," he said. Flat and honest in a way that she hadn't expected.
Grace considered this. She had met many people who avoided giving information because they were trying to protect themselves or manipulate an outcome. Cassian Ravencroft sounded like a person avoiding giving information because he genuinely hadn't decided yet whether sharing it was the right move. That was a different thing. She wasn't sure yet if it was better or worse.
"I see," she said.
---
She asked about Elowen.
Not circuitously — she had learned, through years of practice, when to approach a subject obliquely and when to go directly at it, and her read on Cassian Ravencroft was that circumspection would not impress him and directness might, even if only fractionally.
"I would like to understand what happened to Elowen Marst," she said. "Not the version I've been told. The actual one."
The change in him was subtle and complete. He did not flinch — that would have been too legible. But something behind his eyes settled in a different direction, like a door being quietly closed.
"Elowen is part of the past," he said.
"She's part of the context I've walked into." Grace kept her voice level. "If I'm going to be in this house, in this role, I should understand what happened to the person who was in this role before me."
*In this role.* She watched him register the phrasing. Watched him decide whether to acknowledge it.
He didn't. "What you've been told is consistent with the public record," he said.
"And the public record is incomplete."
"Most records are."
"Lord Ravencroft." She said his name carefully, not with pressure but with weight. "You asked me here to perform a function in a situation I don't fully understand. The minimum I should be given, in exchange for that, is enough information to avoid the specific mistakes that have — apparently — been made before."
The gallery was quiet. Outside the high windows, the winter sky was the colour of old pewter.
Cassian looked at her for a long moment. She had the impression of something being decided, though she couldn't tell what.
"Elowen came to Ravencroft in similar circumstances to yours," he said finally. "She did not remain here long. What happened to her was — the situation was complicated. I won't characterise it further than that."
"Were you in love with her?"
The question came out more directly than she had intended. She kept her face composed.
He looked at her steadily. "No. Not in the way they want you to believe."
*They.* She noted the word. Not *people.* Not *the story.* They.
"All right," she said. "Thank you."
He looked slightly thrown by the thanks. As if he had expected her to push harder and was uncertain what to do with the fact that she hadn't. She had thanked him because what he had given her was genuinely useful — not the information itself but the phrasing of it. *Not in the way they want you to believe.* There were layers in that sentence she intended to take apart carefully later.
---
He stopped her as she was turning to leave.
"Miss Velmira."
She turned back.
His expression was difficult to read — which was, she was beginning to understand, its usual state. But she thought she saw something in it that was not quite calculation. Something that was, if anything, closer to concern.
"Don't enter The Glass Garden after sundown," he said.
No explanation. No elaboration. He held her gaze for a moment, then looked away first — a small thing, but she stored it.
"I'll bear that in mind," she said.
She left The Thorn Hall with her gloves still on and her face still composed, and walked back to the East Wing with the steady unhurried step of a person who has not just received three pieces of significant information in the span of twenty minutes.
In the privacy of her room, she sat in the chair by the window and thought about each of them in turn.
*Not in the way they want you to believe.* Which meant there was a they. Which meant the story about Elowen was managed.
*The minimum I should be given.* He had not disagreed with that framing. He had accepted the premise that she was owed something. That was its own kind of information.
And: *Don't enter The Glass Garden after sundown.* Not *there is nothing to worry about.* Not a denial of danger. A specific instruction to avoid a specific thing at a specific time.
He knew something was in that garden after dark. He was afraid of it — not for himself. She was fairly certain of that. The warning had not been the warning of a man protecting a secret. It had been the warning of a man protecting a person.
She looked out the window at the glass roof of the garden, catching the pale winter light.
The garden at night. The warning. The five scraped names.
He had asked her not to go. He had asked, not commanded, which was also information.
Grace folded her hands in her lap and thought about what it would mean to do what she was told.
