The version of Elowen Marst that Mira knew was the version that everyone knew.
Beautiful, deferential, the ideal of what a young woman sent to fulfill a contract should be — grateful, appropriate, not too curious, not too anything. She had arrived at Ravencroft with good manners and good looks and a reputation for being the kind of person that made difficult situations easier simply by being in them. She had been sweet to the staff. She had been respectful to Lady Seraphine. She had, by all accounts, done everything right.
And then she had gone into The Glass Garden one night and not come back.
"They found her the next morning," Mira said. She was sitting at the end of Grace's bed, pulling a loose thread from the hem of a petticoat, her voice low and matter-of-fact in the way she used when she was telling Grace something she thought Grace needed to know but didn't want to dwell on. "The gardeners found her. Or — some of them say it was Lord Ravencroft himself. The stories don't agree on that part."
"They rarely do," Grace said.
"She'd been there all night." Mira looked up briefly. "In the cold. There's no fire in the glasshouse, apparently — it's kept cold on purpose, for the roses. So she would have —" She stopped. "Well. You can imagine."
Grace could imagine. She filed the image away in the practical part of her mind where she kept information that was relevant to survival.
"They said it was the curse," Mira continued. "The Ravencroft curse — that any bride who enters the garden at night will be taken by it. The roses, the cold, the —" She shrugged. "People in the city still believe it. The innkeeper's wife at the posting house asked me, very quietly, if there was any way to get you not to go. She wanted me to tell you to refuse. She said three women before Elowen had the same end."
Grace thought about the five scraped name plates in The Thorn Hall. Three women before Elowen. That would make four in total — consistent with what she had seen.
"What did you tell the innkeeper's wife?" she asked.
"I told her you were not the kind of person to walk into gardens in the dark without a reason," Mira said. A pause. "I also told her that if there was a reason, you'd be the one to find it."
Grace looked at her. Mira had gone back to the petticoat hem, expression neutral.
"That was very diplomatic," Grace said.
"I have my moments."
---
The business of settling in to a new house had a rhythm that Grace knew well — or not settling in, exactly, since settling implied a permanence she was not prepared to assume, but establishing herself. Understanding the geography. Identifying the staff, their positions, their loyalties where she could read them. Learning which rooms she could enter without question and which required a reason.
The East Wing was hers. The drawing rooms on the main floor were accessible. The library was accessible — she had tested this by simply walking in and taking a book, and no one had said anything. The formal dining room. The small morning room that faced the garden.
The areas that weren't hers: the locked lower east corridor, the study suite Cassian occupied on the upper floor of the west wing, and a small room near the east staircase that had been pointed out to her — without being touched — as the conservatory that had been closed since Elowen's death.
She made note of each closed door. Not because she intended to open them immediately, but because closed doors were information. They told you what someone wanted you not to see.
---
The portrait was in a small antechamber off the main east corridor — a transitional space, half-storage, half-forgotten. Mira found it while looking for extra blankets.
"There's a picture in there," she said, appearing in the doorway of Grace's room with the specific expression that meant she had found something she wasn't sure whether to report. "Covered up. Under a dust sheet."
"Did you look at it?"
"I lifted the corner."
"And?"
Mira hesitated. "You should come and see."
---
The antechamber smelled of old linen and cold stone. A single covered frame leaned against the far wall, too large for the space, which suggested it had been moved here from somewhere else — somewhere with higher ceilings and more light, somewhere it had been intended to be seen.
Grace took the dust sheet by the lower corner and pulled it away.
Elowen Marst was twenty years old in the portrait, which Grace estimated from the face and the style of the hair and the particular quality of the expression that belonged to young women who had not yet had enough time to learn to hide things properly. The face was beautiful in the way Grace had been told — fine features, pale gold hair, the kind of delicacy that painted well. But the eyes were something else. Something that did not match the delicacy of the face.
She was not looking to one side. She was not gazing into the artistic middle distance. She was looking directly out of the canvas with an expression that was — Grace tried to find the right word — aware. Not melancholy, not resigned. Aware. As if she knew she was being looked at, and knew why, and had something to say about it that she had decided not to say out loud.
Grace stood in front of the portrait for a long time.
Then she noticed the dress.
She turned. Walked to the wardrobe that had been prepared for her arrival, opened the largest door, and looked at the formal gown that had been hung there on her first day — cream-coloured, structured at the bodice, with long sleeves ending in a specific fall of lace at the wrist. She had been told it was prepared in advance for formal occasions, part of the trousseau arrangement.
She turned back to the portrait.
The dress Elowen was painted in was cream-coloured, structured at the bodice, with long sleeves ending in lace at the wrist.
The same colour. The same cut. The same lace pattern at the cuff.
Not similar. Not in the same style. The same dress, produced by the same hands, ordered from the same pattern, made for the same purpose.
Mira, behind her, did not say anything. Grace did not say anything. The silence between them had the particular texture of two people who had both understood something and were each waiting to see if the other was going to name it.
Grace was the one who named it.
"The dress wasn't made for me," she said. Her voice was very even. "It was made for the role."
"Grace," Mira said.
"Don't." Quietly. "I'm not — I'm not going to pieces. I'm thinking."
Mira was quiet.
Grace looked at the portrait. At the dress in the wardrobe. At the portrait again.
Elowen Marst, twenty years old, who had come to Ravencroft wearing the same dress and had ended in a cold glasshouse.
Elowen Marst, who had looked directly out of this canvas with the eyes of someone who had understood something and had not been given time to act on it.
Grace made a decision. It was not a dramatic decision — she was not prone to drama. It was a quiet, precise, absolute decision, the kind that doesn't feel like a decision in the moment so much as the recognition of a fact: she was not going to be this portrait. She was not going to be the woman who understood something and ran out of time.
She was going to start now.
---
That evening, she asked the youngest housemaid — not the one who had slipped earlier, a different one, older and more settled — about the conservatory that had been locked since Elowen's death.
The maid was willing to talk. Not about anything specific — her caution was not the caution of someone protecting a secret but the caution of someone who had been in service long enough to know which subjects were avoided and to avoid them as a reflex. But she said, in the course of a conversation that Grace had navigated carefully toward the relevant territory, that the conservatory had been used before the Marst girl's time as a secondary growing space for certain plants. That it had been closed not long after Lord Ravencroft had returned from his father's funeral. That the lock on it now was new — she thought it had been replaced this past autumn.
Grace thanked her and thought about a new lock on an old door.
A new lock meant someone had recently decided the old contents needed more protection. Not preservation — protection. The difference was significant.
---
She did not go near The Glass Garden that night.
She had told Mira she wasn't going to pieces, which was true. She was also not going to walk straight into the obvious danger before she had any of the information she needed. Cassian Ravencroft had warned her away from the garden at night, and while she was not inclined to follow instructions blindly, she was also not inclined to disregard them blindly. He had warned her because he knew something she didn't. Until she had a clearer picture of what that something was, caution was not cowardice — it was strategy.
She lay in bed in the East Wing and listened to the sounds of the house settling around her — the specific voice of an old building, the way it shifted in the cold — and thought about Elowen Marst, who had come here wearing this dress and had looked out of a portrait with knowing eyes and had not, whatever else had happened, looked like someone who had simply gotten lost in the dark.
The frost came in through the gap at the window frame, just faintly. Somewhere outside, past the formal garden, past the stone walls, the Glass Garden stood in its controlled cold and its Winter Rose bloomed in the dark.
Grace thought: *She knew something. And someone needed her not to tell it.*
And then, because she was practical above all else, and because understanding the terrain was the first step in any navigation: *What did she find? And where would she have looked first?*
She had found a covered portrait. A duplicate dress. A new lock on an old conservatory.
She had found a man who warned her away from a garden and who had said, of the woman before her, not that she had been loved and lost, but that he had not loved her *in the way they want you to believe.*
There was a *they.* There was a story being managed. There was a role that had been filled before her.
Grace stared at the ceiling of the East Wing bedroom and let the pieces sit next to each other without forcing them into a shape yet.
Something was here. Something was waiting to be found.
She closed her eyes. Began to plan.
