The blue candles were a Ravencroft tradition, apparently.
The butler mentioned it while explaining the arrangement of the formal dining room — certain occasions called for white candles, certain for the standard ivory, and the first formal dinner with a new household guest called for the pale blue ones, which were made from a wax derived from one of the garden's ancillary plants and which gave the light in the room a quality that Grace could only describe as very beautiful and slightly wrong. Like looking at everything through cold water.
She took her place at the table in the correct position — not the foot, not the head, the precise middle-guest placement that indicated she was significant but not yet family — and she arranged her face into the dinner face and waited.
Cassian arrived exactly on time, which she was already beginning to understand was a characteristic. He was dressed in formal black, as he had been at their first meeting, though the evening coat was different — a slightly finer fabric, a more deliberate cut. He looked, in the blue candlelight, like the kind of portrait that made you want to keep looking even when you knew you were staring.
Grace did not stare. She glanced, catalogued, and looked at the table setting.
Lady Seraphine was already seated, her posture a kind of quiet achievement in its own right — utterly correct, completely natural, the result of sixty years of never once allowing herself to be caught sitting badly. She acknowledged Grace's arrival with a small incline of the head.
The fourth place at the table was filled, a moment later, by Dr. Draven Holt.
---
Grace had formed an impression of Draven Holt at their first meeting in the corridor — linen-shirted, purposeful, the air of a man who had decided long ago that his expertise entitled him to a certain quality of entry into any room — and the formal dinner version of him was essentially the same man in better clothes. He greeted Lady Seraphine with the ease of a long-standing household fixture, greeted Cassian with something that was not quite deference and not quite equality but seemed to operate in the comfortable space between the two, and greeted Grace with a warmth she immediately identified as the wrong temperature.
Not false. The warmth was not false. It was, she thought, entirely genuine — which was precisely what was wrong with it. He was genuinely warm toward her in the way a person was warm toward something that interested them, and the nature of his interest was the thing that put the small cold point at the centre of her chest.
The early part of the dinner was social mechanics: correct topics, correct pacing, the kind of conversation that existed to fill time while people assessed each other and ate. Grace participated at the appropriate level. She noted that Cassian contributed the minimum necessary and not a syllable more. Lady Seraphine managed the conversation the way she managed everything — with perfect technical competence and total absence of warmth.
The fish course arrived. Draven Holt turned to Grace with the expression of a man about to ask a casual question.
"I wonder," he said, "if you've been experiencing any difficulty sleeping since your arrival. New environments can be disruptive."
"I sleep well, thank you," Grace said.
"Any headaches? The change in altitude from the lower city —"
"No."
"Unusual dreams? Sometimes a new place —"
"No," Grace said again. She kept her voice entirely pleasant. "I've had no unusual symptoms of any kind, Dr. Holt. Thank you for asking."
Across the table, she was aware of Cassian's attention, though she did not look at him. The awareness of it was a specific sensation — like a change in air pressure, the kind you felt before a change in weather.
Draven Holt smiled. "Of course. I ask all new residents — it's simply due diligence. The manor has particular qualities that can affect some constitutions."
"What particular qualities?" Grace asked.
A brief pause. "The damp from the glass gardens, primarily. And the altitude. Nothing of concern."
"The Glass Garden would affect the damp?" she said pleasantly. "I had understood it was kept artificially dry inside — climate-controlled for the roses."
Draven Holt looked at her with an expression she was not supposed to be able to read, and which she read without difficulty: recalibration. He had expected a different kind of conversation.
"Quite right," he said. "I misspoke. The damp from the surrounding grounds."
"Of course," Grace said.
---
The crystal rang very quietly as Cassian set down his glass.
The sound was small. It was not intended as an interruption — or rather, it was precisely calibrated to be an interruption that did not look like one. A glass being set down. A slight shift of attention. He began a comment about a matter of local estate business addressed to Lady Seraphine, and the conversation moved, and Draven Holt's line of questioning was simply not resumed.
Grace noted it. She did not look at Cassian. But she noted it.
The dinner continued. The courses came and went with the particular quality of good service that made the mechanics invisible. Grace ate what was put in front of her, spoke when spoken to, and spent the substantial portions of each course cataloguing what she had learned.
Draven Holt had asked about headaches. He had asked about unusual dreams. He had asked about sleep quality. He had asked these questions not with the random curiosity of a physician making small talk but with the specific pattern of a man checking for particular symptoms — the sequence of the questions had a clinical structure, one leading to the next in the way that diagnostic questions led when you knew what you were looking for.
The symptoms he was checking for were not generic. They were specific.
Grace thought about Winter Rose. She thought about the faintly strange quality of its scent in the entrance hall, the way it had made the inside of her nose feel slightly odd. She thought about Cassian's immediate and disproportionate intervention — the glass set down, the topic changed, the examination terminated.
He had not wanted Draven Holt to ask her those questions. He had let the first several happen — had not intervened until a certain point. Which meant either that he had been deciding when to act, or that there was a threshold after which the questions became specifically dangerous.
*What is he checking for?* she thought. And: *Why does Cassian not want him to find it?*
---
Seraphine retired first, after the last course, with the gracious but absolute finality of a woman who had spent decades making exits look like gifts. Draven Holt followed shortly after, with the same warm smile and the same wrong temperature of genuine interest.
Grace and Cassian were left in the dining room.
It was not planned — she could see from the slight stiffness in his bearing that he had not expected the others to leave so efficiently. He stood, and she stood, and for a moment neither of them moved.
The blue candles had burned down somewhat. The light in the room had shifted, become more amber than blue, and in it Cassian Ravencroft looked less like his own portrait and more like a man standing in a room he was tired of.
Grace spoke first.
"Does Dr. Holt ask those questions of every new resident?" she said. "Or just the ones who arrive from House Velmira?"
He looked at her. Something moved in his expression — not quite respect, she thought, but adjacent to it. The specific look of a person encountering a question they hadn't expected to have to answer yet.
"Why do you ask?"
"Because you chose a specific moment to end the questioning. Not when he started. Not at the first question. At a particular point." She paused. "I'd like to understand why that particular point."
The silence stretched for a moment.
"No," Cassian said finally. "He doesn't ask those questions of everyone."
Grace waited.
"That's all I'll say tonight," he said. Not apologetically. Not dismissively. Simply with the flatness of a man who has decided on a boundary and is not going to explain it.
"All right," Grace said.
She gathered her shawl and moved toward the door. At the threshold she turned back, not because she had planned to — it was a genuine impulse, and she was privately irritated with herself for it.
"The questions he was asking," she said. "Do they have something to do with The Glass Garden?"
Cassian said nothing. He looked at her across the length of the dining room in the last of the blue candlelight, and his silence was not a denial.
Grace turned and went back to the East Wing, and she thought about what it meant that he hadn't said no.
