She came back to her room and sat at the writing desk without taking off her coat.
This was a thing she sometimes did when she needed to think before she moved — kept herself in the in-between state of being arrived but not yet settled, still carrying the outside with her, because the outside reminded her that the world was larger than whatever room she was in and whatever she was feeling in it. The coat stayed on. The papers on the desk stayed where they were. Mira had gone to the kitchens for something and the room was quiet and all hers.
Mariel Vale.
She had read the name perhaps thirty times by the end of her second pass through the file, which meant it had lost the quality of unfamiliarity and had become a word she could look at directly. This was, she had found, the most useful first step with information that was too large for immediate processing: read it until it stopped being a shock and became a fact. Facts could be worked with. Shocks required a different kind of management.
Mariel Vale. Her mother. A woman who had worked in or around the Glass Garden, who had been connected to it in a capacity the file described as separate from the official Ravencroft household records — not staff, not contracted researcher, something else. A woman who had died the night Elowen escaped, attempting to reach her child or to take something from the lower level, or both. A woman whose name had been obscured under Elowen's for four years.
Grace sat with this for a while.
Then she looked at the writing desk.
---
She had not deliberately saved the bottom drawer for last. She had worked through the desk systematically on her first day, as she had worked through every piece of furniture in the East Wing, establishing what was present and what was absent. The bottom drawer had appeared empty — standard drawer liner paper, a few scattered nibs, a broken wax seal. Nothing worth examining further.
But that had been before she understood what she was looking for.
She opened the bottom drawer now with the specific attention of a person returning to a location with new information, and she reached to the back of it — past the nibs, past the seal, to the place where the liner paper didn't quite lie flat because something beneath it had caused a slight ridge along the back edge.
She lifted the liner paper.
The handkerchief was there. White, folded into quarters, small enough to fit in a coat pocket. The linen had gone the warm off-white of fabric that had been very clean once and had aged without being soiled — not neglect, just time. It had been placed there deliberately, folded deliberately, with the care of someone setting something aside rather than forgetting it.
She picked it up.
The smell reached her before she had fully unfolded it: not strong, not the concentrated sharpness of the distillery, not the ambient sweetness of the Glass Garden. Something much fainter — the trace of a scent that had once been present in the fabric and had been fading for years. Like the last note of music after the instrument had stopped. Faint. Specific. Winter Rose.
---
She sat with the unfolded handkerchief in her hands.
She was not trying to produce a memory response. She had learned, in the weeks at Ravencroft, that the memory fragments arrived in their own time and could not be reliably summoned — they required the specific combination of the compound's presence and whatever internal conditions made the mind receptive. She was simply holding the handkerchief because it had been here, in this room, in the drawer of the desk where Grace was meant to sit, and it had Winter Rose on it, and she wanted to know why.
The response, when it came, was not visual.
It was sound.
A voice: low, unhurried, pitched for a small audience. The specific vocal quality of someone singing to one person rather than performing — the intimacy of a voice that was not concerned with being heard clearly from a distance, only clearly by the person nearby. A melody she knew the shape of without knowing the notes.
The music box.
The same phrase that the music box had played — the one that had caused the pre-linguistic response, the body-knowledge, the recognition that had no content. The same phrase, now inside a voice. A woman's voice. And in the third measure of the phrase, woven into the melody as naturally as if it had always been there:
*Liora.*
Not called out. Sung in. The name fitted into the melody at the place where a name went, in the particular cadence that names acquired when they were sung enough times to have found their exact position in a phrase. The name had been sung to her so many times that it had its own groove in the melody, its own weight, its own rightness in that precise musical location.
Grace sat very still and let the sound continue for as long as it lasted.
It was not long. The trace amount of compound in the old fabric could only do so much. The voice sang the phrase twice — or she heard it twice, which was the same thing — and then it faded, not abruptly but the way all the fragments faded: by degrees, each repetition slightly less present than the last, until there was nothing except the room and the handkerchief in her hands and the winter light through the window.
---
She did not cry.
She had cried in the Glass Garden, in the dark and the moonlight, with the ambient effect doing its work on her maintained composure, and she had been grateful for that release in the way she was grateful for most things that served a function. But this was different. The voice in the memory was not a grief-object yet. It was too newly known for grief — she had learned the name Mariel Vale perhaps two hours ago, had heard this voice for the second time perhaps thirty seconds ago, and the distance between knowing a thing and feeling it fully was real and not a character flaw.
She would feel it later. She was certain of that. Later, when she had more of the shape of it, she would feel it in full.
For now she sat with the handkerchief and the silence and the name she now knew belonged to the voice.
Mariel Vale. Who had sung her to sleep with this melody. Who had called her Liora in the dark. Who had died in the Glass Garden or because of it, and whose name had been buried under someone else's for four years while her daughter grew up believing herself to be Grace, Grace only, Grace entirely.
Grace set the handkerchief on the desk.
She took out a sheet of paper and wrote: *Mariel Vale. Her voice. The same melody. Liora — sung in, not called out. She knew the name well enough to put it in the music.*
Then she wrote, on the line below: *She is the woman in the grave.*
And on the line below that: *She was my mother.*
She looked at that for a moment. Three sentences. Simple declarative statements, the kind she used when she wanted to be precise. They were precise. They were also the most significant sentences she had written in her life, and they had the quality of things that could not be unwritten once they were down.
She folded the paper. Did not put it in the writing case with the others. Kept it in her hand for a moment. Then she placed it under the handkerchief, one on top of the other, on the surface of the desk where she could see both of them.
---
Mira came back from the kitchens an hour later with tea and the information that it was going to be cold again tonight and she had had the fire in the East Wing sitting room lit in anticipation.
She stopped when she saw Grace's face. Not because Grace's expression was dramatic — it was not. But Mira had been reading Grace's face for four years and she read whatever was in it now accurately enough to set the tea down without speaking, and sit in the chair across the desk, and wait.
"I found something in the archive," Grace said. "And something in the desk afterward."
"All right," Mira said.
"I know my mother's name," Grace said.
Mira was quiet for a moment. Then: "Will you tell me?"
"Mariel Vale."
The name sat in the room between them. Mira looked at Grace with the specific quality of attention that was not sympathy — Grace did not particularly want sympathy — but presence. The quality of a person who was there and intended to remain there regardless of what was required of remaining.
"She was here," Grace said. "At Ravencroft. She died here, four years ago, the night Elowen left." She paused. "Her name was on a handkerchief in the bottom drawer of this desk." She did not say more. She did not yet have the shape of more.
Mira looked at the handkerchief on the desk. Then at Grace.
"What do you need?" she asked.
Grace considered the question with the seriousness it deserved. "I need to go to Marrowbay," she said. "And I need Cassian to take me."
Mira nodded. She poured the tea. She did not say that she was sorry, because she knew Grace well enough to know that sorry was not what was wanted, and that what was wanted was the next step, and that the next step had already been identified.
Grace wrapped both hands around the tea and looked at the handkerchief and the folded paper beneath it, and let the warmth of the cup work its way into her palms, and thought about a woman named Mariel Vale who had sung a name into a melody and was now waiting to be found under the wrong name in the wrong grave.
