She found him in the library.
Not the reading room off the main corridor — the smaller working library on the upper floor, where the shelves held reference material rather than the decorative collecting of a household that kept books for appearance. He was at the central table with documents spread in front of him, and he looked up when she came in with the specific quality of attention that meant he had heard her coming and had decided to continue what he was doing rather than go to meet her, which she understood as consideration rather than indifference: he was giving her the room.
She crossed to the table and placed Cassian's own note in front of him. The one from the file: *Marrowbay market, Thursdays. If she can be found.*
He looked at it. Then at her.
"I've read the file," she said. She did not say which part she had read first or how long she had sat with it. That was not the relevant information. "I know about Mariel Vale."
Something moved in his expression — not surprise, not guilt exactly, something that occupied the space between them: the specific quality of a person who has been expecting a reckoning and is now watching it arrive and is determined not to manage his way through it.
"I know," he said.
"I want to go to Marrowbay."
"I'll take you."
The words were immediate — no hesitation, no qualification, no mention of logistics or timing or the social architecture of leaving Ravencroft for a day without a reason that Seraphine could comfortably explain to anyone who asked. She noted the immediacy. It had the quality of something decided some time ago rather than something decided in this moment.
"You said you'd been there before," she said. "Twice. You didn't find her the first time."
"No."
"And the second time?"
A pause that was not the hesitation of someone deciding whether to be honest but the hesitation of someone deciding how to be honest without framing it in a way that was self-serving. "I didn't go the second time," he said. "I had the information that she might be in Marrowbay and I chose not to go."
"Why?"
He looked at the table. Then back at her. "Because I told myself I needed more preparation. That I needed to know more before I approached her." A pause. "And because I was afraid of what she might tell me about the night her mother died."
Grace looked at him for a moment. "Did you know who her mother was before you wrote it in the file?"
"No. I found Mariel Vale's name afterward — it was in the lower level records, connected to the pharmaceutical work. I matched it to Liora from those records. I wrote it in the file the week before you arrived."
"So you knew who I was," Grace said, "and you still let me come here."
This was not yet the full conversation. She could feel the edge of it — the larger territory that this was the entrance to — and she was choosing, deliberately, not to enter it today. She wanted Marrowbay first. She wanted Elowen first. The full accounting of what Cassian had known and decided could wait until she had the rest of the picture.
He held her gaze. "Yes," he said.
"We'll talk about that when we get back," she said.

They left the following morning.
The arrangement of a reason to be absent for a day required, as she had predicted, the construction of a cover story convincing enough for Seraphine. This turned out to be simpler than expected: Cassian told his mother they were visiting a botanical supplier in the coastal region. Lady Seraphine looked at them both with the expression of a woman who had been managing the social presentation of Ravencroft for decades and had long since developed the capacity to accept whatever explanation was offered without visibly examining it. She said she hoped they would have a pleasant journey. The subject closed.
In the carriage, the morning was cold and the light was the flat grey of a winter day with no intention of becoming anything else. Mira occupied the forward-facing seat and made herself into the most unobtrusive version of herself, which was, Grace had always thought, one of Mira's underestimated skills: the capacity to be present without being a presence when the situation called for it.
Grace and Cassian sat on the same side. Not close — there was space between them — but the same bench, which was different from the facing arrangement and both of them knew it without discussing it.
The road north was familiar in the way of roads she had travelled once and found unremarkable. She looked out the window at the winter countryside and thought about what she was going to say to a woman who had been hiding in a coastal market for four years, who had left a trail of breadcrumbs for the next Grace to follow, who had sat down and written a warning in a small hand and placed it in a wall because she could not stop the system but she could try to give the next person a slightly better chance.
Cassian did not try to fill the silence.
This continued to be, she thought, one of his genuinely good qualities: the understanding that silence was not a vacancy to be filled but a condition with its own value. She had met almost no one else who had this understanding. Adrian filled silences compulsively, with the specific energy of someone who needed the air around him to be managed and verbal. Lord Maeron filled them with administrative matters. Draven Holt filled them with questions. Even Mira, who was better than most, had a threshold beyond which silence became something she felt she should address.
Cassian simply sat.
And in the sitting, in the not-filling, she found herself speaking.
"The handkerchief," she said. "In the bottom drawer of the desk."
He turned slightly toward her. Listening.
"There was Winter Rose on it. Old — barely anything left. But I could smell it, and when I did —" She paused, looking for the right words for something she had not yet described to anyone except Mira in the briefest terms. "I heard her. Mariel Vale. Singing."
He was very still.
"The same melody as the music box," she said. "And she sang my name into it. The real one. Like it belonged there."
The carriage moved over a section of uneven road and steadied again. Outside, the grey fields continued.
"She put the handkerchief there," Cassian said. Not a question. The flat statement of someone connecting pieces.
"I think so. I think she was in that room — before she was in the lower level, or in between, or — I don't know the timeline exactly. But I think she was there, and she left it in case anyone found it who would understand what it meant."
"In case you found it," he said.
Grace thought about this. "Or the next one. She may not have known which of us would be in that room."
"She knew about the succession of Graces?"
"If she worked at the Garden for any length of time, and if she could read the records in the lower level — yes. She would have known." A pause. "She was trying to leave something for whoever came after. Evidence. Proof that there had been a real person before the role. That she had existed."
Cassian was quiet for a long moment.
"She did," he said. Very quietly. "She existed very much."
Grace looked at him. Something in the way he said it — not the formal acknowledgment of a fact but the specific weight of personal knowledge — made her ask the question she had not yet asked.
"Did you know her?"
The road outside continued. A farmhouse, bare winter fields, the specific emptiness of countryside in cold.
"I met her once," he said. "Before I understood what I was looking for. She came to the lower level one night when I was there — not the official lower level, the one below, the one I'd found from the floor plan. She didn't know I was there. I watched her take something from the files and leave. I didn't stop her." A pause. "I should have spoken to her then. I chose not to, because I didn't have enough information yet to know what speaking to her would mean."
Grace heard the echo of his earlier admission: *I choose not to act because I tell myself I need more preparation.* She heard him hearing it too.
"When you say you should have spoken to her," she said.
"I mean that if I had spoken to her, I would have known who she was before the night she died. And knowing that earlier might have —" He stopped. "I don't know if it would have changed anything. I don't know if anything I could have done would have changed how that night went. But I didn't know, and I chose the delay, and she is in the ground."
The carriage moved on. Grace looked out at the grey sky and thought about the specific weight of choices that could not be revised.
"Tell me what you know about what happened that night," she said. "Not the file version. What you remember."
And for the rest of the drive to Marrowbay, he told her.
