They were back inside the stall room before the bundle was opened.
Not because Grace had planned to return — she had intended to take it with her and open it alone, at Ravencroft, in the specific privacy of her room and her own time. But as they were walking through the market toward where the carriage was waiting, Elowen had appeared beside her without announcement and said, quietly, that she had thought of one more thing she should show them, and would they come back for a few minutes.
They came back.
Elowen did not sit down this time. She stood near the small window that looked at the stone wall and watched Grace set the linen bundle on the table.
Grace opened it.
The outer linen was wrapping — not the object itself, just protection. Inside: a second piece of fabric, smaller, folded tightly. The quality was different from the linen: finer weave, the kind of cloth used for household linens rather than working material, the kind of cloth that had been good once and had been kept because it was good. The colour had been white. It had gone off-white with time, and in one corner the fabric was darker, the specific staining of cloth that had absorbed something and not been washed since.
And in the corner that was still clean: embroidery.
Two letters, worked in thread that had been dark blue and was now more grey than blue, with the small uneven quality of stitches made by someone who had learned embroidery without being taught by someone particularly patient, the individual stitches visible and slightly variable in size. Not decorative needlework. The marking of a person who had learned the minimum necessary to put letters into fabric and had used that minimum to put these two specific letters into this specific corner.
*L.V.*
Grace looked at them for a long moment.
The same letters as on the chair. The same abbreviation — not a coincidence, not a different person. The same person, at different times or in different moods, marking the things that were hers with the letters she had claimed as her identity marker: L for Liora, V for Vale, the two halves of a name that had been taken from her daughter before her daughter was old enough to hold it consciously.
She touched the letters with one finger. The thread was raised slightly above the surface of the fabric, as embroidery was, and she could feel each stitch individually under her fingertip — the small imperfections, the places where the tension had been uneven, the characteristic texture of hand-stitching made by someone who was marking something rather than making something beautiful.
Mariel Vale had marked this cloth as hers. And she had been carrying it — protecting it against her chest while she ran — on the night she died.
---
Elowen said: "I didn't know what the initials meant when I picked it up. I didn't know until Cassian's letter, two years ago. Until then it was just something I carried because I couldn't leave it lying in a corridor and I didn't know where else to put it."
"You kept it for four years," Grace said.
"I couldn't throw it away." A pause. "It seemed important. Even when I didn't know why."
Grace looked up from the cloth. Elowen was watching her with the expression she had seen once before: not warmth, but presence. The quality of someone who was paying full attention.
"She had a scar," Grace said. "On her right hand. You told me."
"Yes."
"Was it the hand that was holding this?"
Elowen thought. "I don't know. She was —" She paused, remembering. "She was on the ground when I found the cloth. I don't know which hand she was holding it with. I picked it up from beside her."
Grace looked back down at the cloth in her hands. The L.V. in their grey-blue thread. The way the letters had been made without precision but with absolute intention.
Behind her, she was aware of Cassian moving. Not toward her — toward the wall, the small shift of someone who needed a surface to put his back against, something solid. She did not turn around.
"Thank you," she said to Elowen. "For keeping this. For all of it."
"It was yours to have," Elowen said. Simply. Not false modesty, not performance. A statement of what she believed to be true.
---
They were about to leave when Elowen said one more thing.
She said it to both of them, or to neither of them — she said it to the room, looking at the wall where the window was, and Grace understood this was not a thing Elowen had planned to say but a thing that was escaping her in the way that true things sometimes escaped when the right combination of context and release was present.
"I've thought about coming back," she said. "More than once. Going to the house. Telling what I knew." A pause. "I always decided I didn't have enough. That my word wasn't sufficient evidence. That the people who had built this would find a way to discredit me." She was quiet for a moment. "But I think I also stayed away because going back meant becoming Elowen again, and Elowen was someone they had made. I'd spent four years becoming Nora and I didn't want to stop."
Grace looked at her.
"You're Nora," Grace said. "When this is over — whatever happens — you're still Nora. That's yours. No one takes it."
Elowen looked at her with the specific expression of someone who had not been expecting to need to hear something and had needed to hear it. The expression lasted for two seconds, then the composure came back — not completely, but sufficiently.
"You don't know if you can promise that," she said.
"No," Grace agreed. "But I can promise that I'll try."
Elowen looked at her for a moment longer. Then she stood straighter, which was a small shift with a specific quality: not the posture of someone performing composure, but someone choosing it.
"Then you should go," she said. "You have more to do than I do today, and the light won't last."
---
Outside the stall, in the market, Cassian fell into step beside Grace.
Not beside her in the formal placement of escort — beside her in the way of two people walking together who had stopped negotiating the distance. She was carrying the cloth in her hand, not wrapped, just held. The market noise was around them. The sea smell was on the wind.
He did not touch her. But he was there, in the space beside her, present in the way that presence could be given without contact — the awareness of another person, specific and real, close enough that the world felt differently structured than it did when one was alone.
Grace looked at the cloth in her hand.
She thought about Mariel Vale embroidering these letters into a piece of cloth. She thought about the specific decision required to put your initials on something — not your full name, not a declaration, just the compressed version that people used when they were marking ownership, when they were saying *this is mine* in the smallest possible space. She thought about what it meant that the initials were L.V. and not M.V. — not Mariel marking her own things, but Mariel marking something that belonged to Liora.
She had been marking something as her daughter's. Keeping it safe for her daughter. Carrying it on the night she died.
Grace kept walking. The market continued around them. Cassian was beside her and they did not speak, and the sea was somewhere beyond the rooftops, and the cloth was in her hand, and she thought: *I will find out what she was trying to bring me. I will find out what she died trying to do. And then I will make sure she is known by her name and not by the name of the woman she was buried under.*
She thought: *That is the minimum I can do.*
She thought: *I am going to do more than the minimum.*
