She walked to the water without telling anyone she was going.
This was not unusual for her — she was a person who moved without announcement, who found the social requirement of narrating one's own physical movement one of the more wearing aspects of communal life. But it was also, she recognised, a consequence of the morning: she had absorbed a specific quantity of information, had processed and filed and continued, and had arrived at the point where continued processing required a different kind of space. Not the space of a room. The space of something that moved.
The sea at Marrowbay in the early afternoon was not dramatic. Winter seas were often described as dramatic — the dark, the cold, the specific violence of water refusing to be calm. This was not that. The sea here was grey and patient, the swell low, the sound of it against the harbour wall a continuous persistent rhythm that was, she found, exactly what she needed. Something that did not require response. Something that simply continued.
She sat on a section of the harbour wall away from the market end where the activity was concentrated, on a flat stone that offered a view of the open water, and she held the embroidered cloth in both hands and looked at the sea.
Mira had seen her leave. Mira had not followed. This was, in the ongoing accounting of things Mira understood without being told, one of the entries Grace was most grateful for.
She sat for ten minutes, approximately. She did not time it. It was the amount of time required to let the morning become a thing that had happened rather than a thing that was still happening, which was a transition she could feel but not predict.
When she heard his footstep on the stone behind her, she did not turn around. She had known he would come — not immediately, not intrusively, but she had known he would come because he had been watching the level of what she was carrying all morning and he was the kind of person who, having decided to be present, was present in ways that did not require announcement.
He sat beside her on the harbour wall. Not far — close enough that she was aware of him without turning, close enough that the cold wind off the water moved around both of them rather than past each of them separately.
---
He did not ask how she was.
She had developed, over weeks of working alongside him, a considered appreciation for the specific way he did not ask how she was. Not because he was indifferent to how she was — she had significant evidence to the contrary — but because he had learned, or had always known, that *how are you* was a question that required the answerer to perform an assessment of themselves for the benefit of the asker, and that this performance was rarely what someone in the middle of a difficult thing actually needed. What they needed was someone to be there. He was there.
After a minute or two, he said: "I owe you an apology."
Grace looked at the water.
"About Elowen," he said. "About knowing she was alive and where she might be and not telling you from the beginning. That was mine to tell. I chose not to."
She was quiet, listening.
"I had reasons," he said. "I had the same reasons I've had for every piece of information I've delayed giving you. I told myself the context wasn't right, the timing wasn't right, you needed more of the picture before the piece would be useful." He paused. "Those reasons were partially true and partially a way of not having to tell you the thing that immediately preceded the information about Elowen, which is that I knew who you were before you arrived."
"I know," Grace said.
"I know you know. I'm saying it anyway." A pause. "I'm trying to stop telling you things in the order that's convenient for me."
Grace turned and looked at him.
He was looking at the water, his profile to her, the specific lines of his face in the winter light that had become, over three weeks, a configuration she knew well — the jaw, the particular way he held his shoulders when he was being honest about something that cost him something.
"What else are you not telling me?" she asked.
She meant it as a genuine question, not a challenge. She wanted the list. She wanted to understand the territory of what remained between them — the withheld information, the decisions made without her, the full accounting of what Cassian Ravencroft had known and decided over the months and years before she arrived.
He turned his head. He looked at her with the direct quality that was, she had come to understand, the form his honesty took when the managed version was no longer available.
And he was quiet for two seconds longer than he should have been.
Not long. Two seconds. But she had been calibrated to his silences for three weeks, and she knew what different lengths meant, and two seconds in this context was the length of a man who was deciding which part of a truth to lead with, which was different from a man who was deciding how to be honest.
The distinction mattered.
She looked at him. He was still looking at her.
She kissed him.
---
The kiss was not the almost of the Glass Garden.
The Glass Garden had been the specific hesitation of a thing not yet allowed, both of them knowing it and maintaining the not-allowing because the not-allowing was connected to everything else that was not yet resolved. This was different. This was two people who had spent three weeks in the same house circling the same truths, who had sat together in the moonlight and had a conversation about things that could not be forgiven and had kept going, who had driven to Marrowbay in the same carriage and found a woman who was still alive and pieced together the story of a woman who was not, and who were now sitting on a harbour wall in the afternoon cold with an embroidered cloth between them that was evidence of a life and a death and everything between.
It was real. It tasted like cold air and something warmer underneath, and his hand came up to the side of her face with the specific care of a person who was not going to waste the gravity of the moment, and she was aware for the duration of it that this was what she had wanted since the night in the Glass Garden and that wanting it had been correct and that the two seconds of his hesitation were still there, unresolved, somewhere adjacent to the kiss.
She pulled back.
Not far. The distance of a conversation rather than a retraction.
He looked at her. His hand was still at the side of her face, barely — the contact of someone who was not holding her there but had not yet decided to remove it.
"Tell me what you're still keeping," she said.
The words were quiet. Not hard — she was not making demands, she was asking for something she needed. There was a difference, and she thought he understood the difference.
He looked at her.
And the two seconds returned — the length of a man deciding which part of a truth to lead with. The same pause. Different context, same pause.
She stepped back, and the contact ended, and she looked at him.
"When you're ready to tell me everything," she said, "I'll be there to hear it. But I need you to know that I can tell the difference between a man who doesn't have the words yet and a man who is deciding which words to use."
Cassian looked at her for a long moment. Something moved in his face that was not managed — the specific discomfort of a person who has just been seen clearly.
"Yes," he said. "I know."
"Then let that be what we're working toward," Grace said. "Not the kiss. The words."
She stood, and picked up the cloth, and walked back toward the market where Mira would be waiting.
Behind her, she heard him stay where he was for a moment. Then she heard him stand. Then his footstep on the stone, following.
Not immediately. Not hurrying.
But following.
