The letter came on the third afternoon.
Not through the main household correspondence system, which was handled by the butler and which she assumed Adrian monitored: through the kitchen entrance, with the delivery boy who brought produce from the market, delivered to the kitchen woman from the south village who was not Adrian’s, who put it in the pocket of her apron and left it on the windowsill of the east garden passage when she went out to bring in the afternoon logs.
Grace found it on her walk.
She had established a routine of afternoon walks through the east garden passage, which served two purposes: genuine movement after long hours of indoor planning, and a route that passed the windowsill without appearing to specifically target it. The fold of the paper was Cassian’s, which she recognised before she opened it. The contents were brief.
*I’m outside. East garden gate. I won’t come in unless you ask me to.*
She read it twice. She stood in the passage with the note in her hand and the winter air coming through the gap at the door, and she considered.
He had found a way to reach her that did not involve the household’s communication systems. He had gotten here without announcing his arrival. He was outside the gate and had specified, clearly, that he would not cross it without her instruction. All of this was information about what he was doing and how he was doing it, and all of it was consistent with a person who had understood the specific thing she had told him in Ravencroft’s study: that she would not be kept anywhere by feeling, that her decisions were hers to make.
She put the note in her pocket and walked to the east garden gate.
---
The east garden gate was in the far corner of the kitchen garden, where the formal garden ended and the working ground began. It was a service gate, not the main entrance — used by delivery people and workers, not by household members. She had known it since childhood as the gate you could get through without anyone in the main house noticing, which was why she had used it more than once as a child and why she was using it now.
Cassian was on the other side.
He had not come on horseback — there was no horse visible, which meant he had come on foot from wherever he had left the carriage, which was a significant walk in winter cold. He was standing at the gate with his hands in his coat pockets and the specific quality of a person who had been waiting for some time and had decided that waiting was what the situation required and was doing it without complaint.
He looked at her through the iron bars of the gate. She looked at him.
"You shouldn’t be here," she said.
"I know. I came anyway."
"If Adrian has people watching —"
"I came on foot from the south lane. I didn’t come through the main approach." A pause. "I was careful."
Grace assessed this. Then she unlatched the gate and opened it, and he stepped through, and she closed it again. They stood in the kitchen garden in the winter afternoon, with the bare vegetable beds around them and the house visible in the distance.
---
He reached into his coat and produced a sealed envelope.
Thick — not one document but several. She took it, looked at the seal, looked at him.
"What is this?"
"Everything I have on Adrian," he said. "The documentation of his role in the Grace succession. His communications with the Delverne house. The financial record of his management of the Velmira-Winter Rose arrangement. The evidence connecting him specifically to the preparation of the pharmaceutical compound that was used on you." He met her eyes. "Enough to present to any family council or legal body that has jurisdiction over inter-house arrangements. Enough to be credible without Ravencroft’s support."
Grace looked at the envelope. "You’ve had this."
"I’ve been assembling it. The last pieces came together in the past few days." A pause. "I could have sent this. I didn’t want to send it. I wanted to bring it to you myself."
"Why?"
He looked at her with the direct quality that was his genuine register — the version without the management. "Because I wanted you to have the choice of what to do with it. Not delivered through a system, not routed through a mechanism where I’m making decisions about timing and context. Here, directly, from my hand to yours, with nothing decided except that you should have it."
Grace held the envelope. The cold came through her coat. Somewhere in the main house, a window was lit.
"You told me you weren’t going to decide things for me," she said.
"Yes."
"This is you not deciding things for me."
"I’m trying," he said. Not defensive — honest. The specific honesty of someone acknowledging the gap between the principle and the practice without using the acknowledgment as an excuse for the gap.
Grace looked at him. At the coat, the cold, the walk he had taken on foot in winter to stand outside a gate he had committed not to enter. At the envelope in her hand.
"How long did you have to argue with yourself," she said, "before you decided not to just come in and give it to me directly?"
The corner of his mouth moved. "Longer than I would prefer to admit."
"How did you resolve it?"
"I asked myself what you would want," he said. "Not what would be most efficient. Not what would feel most like helping. What you would want. And the answer was: to be the one who comes to the gate, not the one who decides whether to open it."
Grace held the envelope for a moment longer.
Then she looked at him — at the specific quality of a person who had been wrong and knew it and was working, imperfectly and visibly, on understanding what right would look like.
"Go back," she said. "I have what I need here. I’ll be in touch when I know my next move."
"All right."
"And Cassian."
He looked at her.
She thought about what she wanted to say and what the situation warranted and where she actually was in the accounting between them. She had not forgiven him. She had not decided anything about him. But she was standing in a kitchen garden in the winter with evidence in her hand that he had assembled and carried on foot in the cold and delivered through a gate he had committed not to cross without her permission, and she was — not softened, that was not the word. Recalibrated. Updating her model, the way she updated all models when new evidence arrived.
"This was the right way to do it," she said. "I want you to know that."
He was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded, once, and turned and went back through the gate.
She watched him walk away across the winter field. Then she latched the gate and went back into the house with the envelope in her coat, and she thought about what she was going to do next.
