She wrote the letter to Adrian that evening.
Not because she planned to confront him before leaving — she did not plan to confront him at all, not here, not yet, not in his house with his people and his contingency contracts and the specific advantage of home ground. She wrote the letter because she was not going to disappear in the night without a word, which would have been the simpler option but was not the honest one, and she had decided some time ago that honesty was a value she was not going to sacrifice for the sake of clean exits.
One page. She did not explain. She did not accuse. She did not make arguments about what he had done or ask him to understand her perspective or tell him what she now knew. He already knew what he had done. He had made the choices knowingly, which meant there was nothing to illuminate.
She wrote: *I do not owe you my life.*
And beneath that: *This is not a goodbye. It is an accounting. The accounting is not complete.*
She folded the letter, addressed it to him, placed it on the writing desk where it would be found in the morning.
Then she put on her coat, picked up the travelling case she had quietly packed over the afternoon, and went to find Mira.
---
Mira was in the west wing linen room, which was where she had been assigned, which was also where Grace had expected to find her because Mira had communicated her location through the kitchen-window system along with the rest of the information. She was folding linens when Grace came in, with the quality of a person who had been folding linens while also being completely prepared for this exact moment.
She looked at Grace. At the coat. At the travelling case.
She put down the linen she was holding and picked up a bag that was packed behind the storage shelf.
"I’ve been ready since yesterday," she said.
Grace looked at her. "You packed yesterday?"
"I packed yesterday afternoon when I understood what was happening." She swung the bag over her shoulder. "You weren’t going to stay, and I wasn’t going to let you leave without me. It seemed logical to be prepared."
Grace considered saying something about this. Then she decided that saying something would take time she didn’t have, and that everything she might say was already understood between them, and she nodded once and they left the linen room.
---
The first obstacle was the east corridor guard.
Adrian had placed a member of staff at the junction between the east wing and the main house after dinner — ostensibly a footman doing rounds, actually a positioned observer. Grace had noted him at nine o’clock. She had also noted that he moved his position approximately every forty minutes and that his replacement route took him past the servants’ stairs before returning to the east junction.
She and Mira moved at thirty-eight minutes past his last position change. They went through the east garden passage — the same passage where she had found Cassian’s note — and out through the kitchen garden to the south exit that Mira’s note had identified as unmonitored.
The south exit was a door in the garden wall used by the outside staff, with a simple latch on the inside and no lock requiring a key. Grace had a piece of wire she had been carrying in her coat pocket for two days, bent into a shape that would work the latch silently if needed. She did not need it — the latch moved smoothly. The door opened.
They went through. Grace pulled the door closed behind them without latching it, leaving it the way doors were left by workers who expected to return.
---
The second obstacle was the main road.
Velmira House was on the north road, and the north road had traffic at most hours, but the traffic was a feature rather than a problem: in traffic, two women with bags were not unusual. Mira had arranged with the kitchen woman to have word sent to a specific coaching inn on the south road, where a carriage operated by a company that did not have connections to the great houses would be waiting at ten o’clock.
They reached it at nine forty-eight.
The driver was professional and incurious, which was what she had specified and what Mira had communicated and what a specific sum of money had ensured would be the case. He took their bags. He did not ask their names. He confirmed the destination and the payment arrangement and they got in.
The carriage moved.
---
Grace sat in the carriage as it left the city and thought about the letter on the writing desk. About Adrian reading it in the morning. About the specific moment when he would understand that she had not been there when the tea was drunk and had not been confused by the soft management of the conversation and had not been softened or isolated or contained, and that she had left on her own terms through a door in the garden wall with a bag and her maid and a folder of evidence.
She thought about what his face would do when he read *I do not owe you my life.*
She thought it would not look like what she had grown up thinking his love for her looked like. She thought it would look like calculation: the recalibration of a plan, the assessment of the next move, the specific focus of someone who had been managing a situation and had lost a piece of it and was already working on the response.
She thought about that for a while. About what it said about the love it revealed.
Then she thought about where she was going.
Not Ravencroft. Not yet — she needed what came next to be on her own terms, not as a return to a place and a person, but as a deliberate arrival at a specific next step in her own plan. The carriage was going first to an address in the city: Elowen’s city address, the one she had taken before leaving Marrowbay, the room Nora Wren kept when she was in Aurelith.
Elowen was part of what came next. Elowen’s testimony, her account, the four years of survival that had brought her to a market in Marrowbay and then back into the centre of a story she had tried to leave. Grace needed that testimony in a form that could be presented. She needed Elowen to understand what she was planning and to agree to it.
Mira was looking at her from the opposite seat. Not asking — reading her the way she always read her, with the attention of four years of constant proximity.
"I know where we’re going," Mira said.
"I know you do."
"Do you know what you’re going to ask her?"
Grace looked at the dark window of the carriage. Outside, the city moved past — lights, streets, the specific texture of Aurelith at night, which was quieter than the day but never entirely quiet.
"I’m going to ask her," Grace said, "to come back to where it started. One more time. And then never again."
Mira was quiet.
"She’ll say yes," she said finally.
"I think so too," Grace said.
The carriage moved on through the winter city, and Grace sat with the envelope in her coat and the letter she had left behind her and the plan she was building, piece by piece, toward something that was not yet complete but was beginning, finally, to have a clear shape.
