Elowen opened the door without asking who was there.
This was, Grace noted, the habit of a person who had been living carefully for long enough that they had developed a specific relationship with the sound of a knock: not suspicious, but attentive. She stood in the doorway of the room on the second floor of a building in the commercial district of Aurelith — plain door, plain corridor, the kind of address that existed specifically to be unremarkable — and looked at Grace and Mira with their bags and the cold of the night still on them, and she did not say anything except to open the door wider.
They came in.
The room was what Grace had expected: functional, clean, without the objects that accumulated in spaces where people lived rather than stayed. A table, two chairs, a narrow bed, shelving that held practical things. A single lamp. No ornamentation. The room of a person who had learned to travel light in every sense.
Mira took the corner near the shelving without being asked. Grace set her bag down and looked at Elowen.
"I need to tell you what I’m planning," Grace said. "And then I need to ask you something."
Elowen sat in one of the chairs. She folded her hands in her lap with the specific stillness of a person who had learned patience in the hard way. "Tell me."
---
Grace laid it out plainly.
Not the full architecture — not every component, not every contingency. The part that required Elowen: she needed to return to Aurelith’s social sphere, in a specific and limited capacity. She needed to be present when Grace addressed the parties involved in the Grace succession system. She needed to be seen alive by people who had been told she was dead. And she needed to be willing to say, in that context, who she was and what had been done to her.
Elowen listened without interrupting. When Grace finished, she asked two questions.
"What will it cost me?"
"Your anonymity," Grace said. "Nora Wren can still exist afterward — I believe that, and I’ll do what I can to ensure it — but the separation between Nora and Elowen will be known to the people in that room. You won’t be able to rely on the death story anymore."
Elowen absorbed this. "And the second question: will it actually end this?"
"It will end the current iteration," Grace said. "It will create a documented record that makes continuing the Grace system, in this form, too costly. It won’t guarantee that some version of it never emerges again. I can’t promise that. I can promise that we will have done what could be done with what we have."
Elowen looked at her for a long moment. The lamp on the table cast a specific quality of light on her face — the kind that showed things rather than softened them. She looked tired. She looked like a person who had been living at a sustainable distance from her own history for four years and had just been asked to close that distance.
"When?" she asked.
"Soon. I need to return to Ravencroft first. A few days."
"All right," she said.
---
Grace arrived at Ravencroft the following morning.
She came through the rear garden gate — the one she had found in her first weeks of mapping the estate, the one that connected the east property line to the service path behind the glasshouse. She had used it twice before. She used it now because she had not told Cassian she was coming and she was not sure yet whether she wanted the arrival to be formal or not. The rear gate answered that question by its nature: practical, direct, unperformed.
Cassian was in the east courtyard when she came through. He had been speaking with the estate manager and he looked up when she appeared and the estate manager, with the professional instinct of a man who had been reading rooms for thirty years, found a reason to be elsewhere.
Cassian looked at her. She looked at him.
"What do you need?" he said.
Three words. She had heard him say many things — had catalogued his specific registers, the different qualities of his voice in different modes of engagement. This was the clean version: no management, no evaluation, no reading of the situation before committing to a response. Just: what do you need.
"Full access to the Lower Glasshouse records," she said. "Starting now."
"You have it," he said.
She nodded once and went.
---
She worked through the morning.
The Lower Glasshouse had a quality she had not noticed in her earlier visits: the specific atmosphere of a space that held a history larger than what any single visit could take in. She moved through the files systematically, the way she moved through everything — working from the oldest material outward, building a chronology, placing each piece in relation to the others.
The file on Mariel Vale was the thickest of the personal records. Not because Mariel had been more important than others in the administrative sense, but because she had been a researcher as well as a worker, and researchers left more paper. Her notes were in the file alongside the administrative records: precise, dense, the handwriting of someone who had been educated well and who thought carefully before writing. Grace had read pieces of this material before. She read it fully now.
She read until she came to the final administrative entry.
It was a standard form — the kind used for staff records, with fields for personal information and next-of-kin and the nature of the employment. Most of the fields had been filled in by whoever managed the records. The next-of-kin field had been filled in by a different hand: smaller, more careful, the specific penmanship of someone filling out an official form and wanting to get it right.
The entry read: *Next of kin: one daughter, Liora, age two at time of writing.*
Grace looked at this for a long time.
The field had been filled in by Mariel herself. She had filled in her own next-of-kin. She had written down her daughter’s name in the formal record of the place that would eventually take both of them — take Mariel’s life and take Liora’s name and claim to have given her a better one in exchange. She had written the name carefully, in the official form, as if making sure it was on record somewhere that she existed.
*Liora.*
Grace set the file down on the worktable.
She was alone in the Lower Glasshouse. The diffuse light from the ceiling panels was grey and even, the same light that had been here since the space was built, unchanged by all the things that had happened in and around it. She stood at the worktable with Mariel’s handwriting in front of her and she understood, with the specific understanding that required the full weight of evidence to arrive, that she had a name that had been given to her by a person who had loved her, and it had been taken, and now she was in the place where both of them had been and she was taking it back.
She said it aloud.
"Liora Vale."
Not testing it. Not checking whether it fit. She said it the way you said your own name: because it was yours, because it had always been yours, because the fact of it did not require verification.
