The shared practice room was on the third floor, at the end of a corridor that Ethan associated with the particular acoustic quality of a space designed for concentrated work — sound-dampened walls, overhead lighting calibrated for screen use, the faint mechanical hum of climate control that kept the temperature at the specific point where people stopped noticing it.
He arrived at seven fifty-eight, which was two minutes before the scheduled start of the men's team's morning block.
The lights were already on.
---
The women's team had five stations set up along the left wall — monitors live, peripherals arranged, the specific configuration of a team that had been in a space long enough to have established their preferred layout. Lyra was at the third station from the left, which was, Ethan noted with the part of his brain that noted things without being asked, the same position she always chose when given a choice: center access, clear sightlines, two exit paths.
She did not look up when he walked in.
Ethan looked at the schedule posted beside the door.
Men's team: 8:00 — 12:00.
He looked at the women's team occupying the room.
He pulled out his phone.
The ZNT scheduling system had an update timestamp of 11:47 PM the previous evening. He read it: a reallocation, effective immediately, assigning the shared practice room to the women's team from 8:00 to 10:00 and the men's team from 10:00 to 14:00. The change had been made by someone in the administrative team. There was no notification flag. There was no confirmation request. There was a new entry in the system and the assumption, apparently, that people would check the system before arriving.
At eleven forty-seven PM.
Ethan looked at the update time again.
"The schedule says men's team has this room from eight," he said. He said it without inflection — not angry, not challenging, the flat tone he used when he was reporting a fact that required a response.
One of the women's team members reached for her phone. Two others exchanged a look.
Lyra said, without looking up from her screen: "The schedule also says women's team has this room from eight. Looks like there's a scheduling conflict."
Same tone. Same flat delivery. The response of someone who had also done the math and arrived at the same conclusion: something had broken, and the breaking was not the fault of anyone currently in the room.
"There was a system update at eleven forty-seven last night," Ethan said.
"I don't check the scheduling system at midnight."
"Neither do I."
A brief silence. The members of both teams were demonstrating various forms of elaborate non-attention — focused on screens, adjusting equipment, performing the concentrated indifference of people who had decided that whatever was about to happen was not something they wanted to be visibly watching.
Ethan looked at the scheduling system again. He was not looking at the update, specifically. He was looking at the pattern of updates over the past month — the accumulated record of changes, reallocations, adjustments that had accumulated in the system like sediment, each one individually minor, the aggregate of them something he had not previously examined as a whole.
He saw it then.
Not the eleven forty-seven update. The pattern behind it.
"This is the third time this month the men's team schedule has been modified with less than twelve hours' notice," he said. He was not saying it to Lyra specifically — he was saying it to the situation, which was a distinction he sometimes made that other people sometimes found imprecise. "Each time, the modification reduced available practice time."
Lyra looked up.
It was the first time she had looked at him directly since he had walked in, and it had the quality of attention she brought to things she was deciding whether to engage with — not hostile, not welcoming, just the specific consideration of someone assessing whether a conversation was worth having.
She had apparently decided it was.
"That's the third time the men's team schedule has been modified," she said. "This month, the women's team's allocated hours have been reduced from the original schedule seven times." She held his gaze. "Not last-minute modifications. Allocated below the original agreed hours from the start."
A beat.
"Seventeen," she said.
One word. One number.
Ethan looked at her.
He knew what seventeen was. He knew it the moment she said it, without needing to work it out, because the data he had been looking at was in front of him and the arithmetic was not complicated. Seventeen hours — the cumulative gap between the women's team's originally agreed weekly allocation and what they had actually received over the past month. An average of just over four hours per week. Enough to matter. Enough to compound.
He did not have a response to seventeen that was not either an acknowledgment of the problem or a deflection from it.
He was not going to deflect.
"I'll raise it with management," he said.
Not an apology. The situation was not his to apologize for — he had not created the scheduling gap, had not benefited from it intentionally, had not known about it until forty seconds ago. But he had just been handed accurate information about a problem that existed within his organization, and the correct response to accurate information about a problem was to address the problem.
Lyra looked at him for a moment after he said it — the assessing look, the one that was deciding something. Whatever she decided produced a single nod: small, economical, the acknowledgment of someone who had received something worth acknowledging.
"We'll clear the room at nine fifty-five," she said.
She looked back at her screen.
---
The men's team relocated to the smaller practice room on the second floor for the two-hour interim.
It was adequate. The room was narrower, the setup less optimal, the climate control slightly warmer than Ethan preferred — none of which significantly affected what they were able to accomplish in the session, because what they were able to accomplish was a function of the people in the room rather than the room itself. They ran three scrimmage scenarios and completed a tactical review of the upcoming qualifier bracket. The session was productive.
Ethan participated with his usual focus.
He also, in the gaps between active decision-making — the breaks, the setup time between scenarios, the brief intervals when his conscious attention was not required for anything specific — pulled up the scheduling data and worked through it properly.
Not because Lyra had said a number. Because the number was accurate, and accurate information about problems deserved to be examined rather than filed.
This was the distinction he was making.
The data covered twelve weeks — the full period since ZNT had added the women's division to its active roster. In week one, the allocation had matched the agreed hours exactly. In week two, there had been a single deviation of two hours, attributed in the system notes to a facilities conflict. By week four, deviations had become consistent. By week eight, the women's team was receiving approximately eighty percent of their originally agreed practice time, with the shortfall being absorbed without formal complaint or escalation.
Ethan read through the system notes attached to each deviation.
The reasons varied: facilities conflicts, scheduling overlaps, equipment maintenance, sponsor visit preparations that required the larger practice spaces. Each individual reason was plausible. The pattern they formed was not accidental.
He opened a new email.
The recipient was Director Park. The subject line was: Practice Allocation Review — Women's Division. The body of the email was precise and factual: a summary of the data he had found, the cumulative deviation from agreed hours, a request for a review of the allocation process to ensure both teams were receiving their contracted practice time going forward.
He wrote it the way he wrote everything: accurately, without unnecessary language, with specific data points rather than general assertions.
He read it once.
He thought about why he was sending it.
The honest answer — the answer he arrived at when he applied to himself the same standard of accuracy he applied to everything else — was not simple. Part of it was organizational: a resource allocation problem existed within ZNT and should be corrected regardless of who had identified it. Part of it was the data, which was clear and did not permit a comfortable interpretation that made the problem smaller than it was.
And part of it was seventeen, said in a flat tone by someone who had been tracking a number he had not known to look for, and had offered it not as an accusation but as information — the same way he had offered a vision gap assessment in a meeting four weeks ago.
The same way.
He sent the email.
---
The men's team returned to the shared practice room at ten o'clock.
The women's team had cleared at nine fifty-four — one minute early, which was the kind of precision that Ethan noted without comment. The room had been restored to a neutral configuration: stations cleared, equipment returned to storage, the space left exactly as it would have been found if no one had been there.
The only evidence that anyone had used it was the faint warmth of recently-running equipment and the specific smell of a room that had been occupied by people working hard.
Ethan set up his station in his usual position.
Kai arrived two minutes later, looked at the room, looked at Ethan, and said nothing. This was the correct response. Ethan appreciated it.
The afternoon session was good — sharp, focused, the kind of practice that produced results you could point to afterward. Three tactical improvements, two mechanical refinements, one team coordination pattern that had been inconsistent for two weeks and finally clicked into something reliable. By the end of the block, Ethan's notes had seven items that needed follow-up, all of them actionable, all of them things he could address in the next week.
At fourteen hundred, he received a reply from Director Park.
The email was brief: she had reviewed the data, agreed that the allocation had drifted from the agreed schedule, and would be implementing a formal tracking process to ensure both teams received their contracted hours going forward. She thanked him for bringing it to her attention.
Ethan read it and put his phone away.
He thought about the word seventeen.
He thought about the fact that he had not known that number existed until this morning, that it had been accumulating for three months in a system he had access to and had not examined because it had not occurred to him to examine it. He thought about what it meant that someone else had been counting — quietly, without complaint, without escalation, just counting and waiting and finally saying the number out loud in a room that happened to contain the right person to do something about it.
He thought about the busted regional qualifier run that had been the final factor in the end of a women's division team that had not yet played a single official match.
He thought about the person who had come here anyway.
The connection between these thoughts was not one he examined directly. He filed it in the same place he had been filing similar connections for four weeks — the space in his mind where things went when they were relevant and he was not yet sure what to do with them.
The space was, he noted, getting full.
He opened his tactical notes and returned to work.
