Two weeks was not a long time.
Lyra knew this in the abstract — two weeks was fourteen days, approximately three hundred thirty-six hours, a small fraction of the time she had spent developing the skills that had gotten her to ZNT in the first place. Two weeks was not long enough to transform anything fundamental. It was long enough to make specific, targeted improvements to specific, identified gaps, if you were disciplined about what you were working on and honest about whether the work was producing results.
She had been disciplined. She had been honest.
She sat at her station in the shared practice room and ran through her pre-match routine — the same checklist she ran before every competitive session, checking hardware, checking settings, checking the specific mental state she needed to be in before the first decision of the match was required of her. The checklist took four minutes. It had taken four minutes for two years. She found the consistency of it useful.
Across the room, the men's team was setting up.
She did not look at them directly. She did not need to. She was aware of them the way she was aware of everything in her peripheral environment during a practice session — present, cataloged, not requiring active attention.
She was aware of one of them slightly more specifically than the others.
This was, she had decided, acceptable. It was information. Information was neutral.
The match started at two o'clock.
---
The first thing she noticed was that nothing had changed on his side.
Same tempo. Same aggression level. Same complete absence of adjustment for the fact that the opponent was his own organization's women's team rather than a qualifier rival. He was playing the match at full capacity, which was what she had needed him to do two weeks ago and what she needed him to do now, because you could not accurately measure improvement against a reduced standard.
She had asked for this, in the way that you asked for things without words — by showing up to the first scrimmage and not flinching, by making it clear that she expected to be treated like an opponent rather than an accommodation.
He had heard her.
Good.
She moved to her first ward placement of the match — river approach, the path she had been drilling for two weeks, the option that cost her slightly more time but gave her two exit routes and a less predictable sight line. It felt different than it had in practice. Everything felt different in a real match. But the muscle memory was there, the decision tree was there, and she moved through it at the speed the moment required rather than the speed that felt safe.
Phase one of the match settled into its rhythm.
The vision gap did not appear.
---
Ethan noticed at minute four.
He had been tracking her positioning as a matter of course — not specifically, the way he tracked everything in a match, the accumulated awareness of where all relevant pieces were and where they were likely to go. At minute four, he ran the calculation he had run in the first scrimmage at minute eight and arrived at a different result: the gap was not there.
She had fixed it.
He adjusted.
This was the correct response to updated information: recalibrate, identify what the new configuration meant for his team's options, proceed. He did this in the three seconds between identifying the change and the next decision point, which was the amount of time available and therefore the amount of time he used.
The match continued.
At minute eight, he attempted a lane pressure play that had worked cleanly in the first scrimmage because it had targeted the vision gap that no longer existed. The play ran into resistance — not a counter, exactly, more like an absence of vulnerability where the vulnerability had previously been. He redirected. The play resolved as neutral rather than advantageous.
He noted this and moved on.
---
Minute twelve arrived with a quality that Lyra recognized from the first scrimmage — the specific feeling of a match that had gotten past its opening phase and was now operating at its real level, the level where the preparation either held or it didn't.
She had been tracking Ethan's rotations.
This was not unusual — tracking the opposing midlaner was part of her job as support, the information was directly relevant to her team's safety and decision-making. She had been tracking his rotations in every scrimmage and ranked game she had studied. She knew his patterns well enough to have identified three tendencies that appeared consistently under specific conditions.
At minute eleven forty-seven, the conditions for the first tendency appeared.
She positioned.
Not to stop the play — she didn't have the resources to stop it outright, and attempting to do so would have been overcommitting. But to intercept enough of it to reduce the value, to be in the place that would cost him something if he continued on the path she thought he was taking.
He saw her.
She saw him see her.
What happened next was the part that she would think about afterward: he did not stop the play, he adjusted it — mid-rotation, a change of angle that maintained the play's objective while accounting for her presence. It was fast. It was correct. And it was the product of someone who had processed her positioning and responded to it in real time rather than continuing on a path that had stopped being optimal.
The play resolved as neutral.
She had not stopped it. She had made it cost something.
That was enough.
---
The play at minute twenty was not planned, which was how she knew it was right.
She had been in position for something else — a vision establishment play, routine, the kind of decision that did not require significant deliberation. Then the information changed: a cooldown on the opposing team's key ability, a brief window that was either significant or not depending on whether she was reading the game state correctly.
She had been working on trusting the eighty-three percent.
She moved.
The timing was clean. Not perfect — she would find things to critique in the footage, she always did — but clean in the way that mattered: the decision and the movement were the same speed, no gap between knowing and doing, the delay that had cost her the full value of the play two weeks ago simply not present.
Her team got the outcome.
In the two seconds after the play resolved, in the specific silence of a match that had paused at a significant moment and was about to continue, she heard nothing from the other side of the room.
Not celebration. Not frustration. Just the brief cessation of keyboard sound that happened when the person at the keyboard was processing rather than acting.
One beat.
The match continued.
---
The final score was a men's team victory, as it had been in the first scrimmage.
The margin was smaller.
Ethan knew this was not a coincidence and did not treat it as one. He ran the match summary in his head while the debrief was happening — not ignoring the debrief, tracking it with the part of his attention that could do both — and cataloged the specific points where the result had been determined. Three key objectives had gone to the men's team. Two had been contested in ways they had not been contested in the first scrimmage. One had been genuinely close.
One of the close plays had been the minute-twenty intervention — the play that had not had a delay.
He had noted the absence of the delay in real time and had not said anything about it during the debrief because it was not the kind of observation that belonged in a team debrief. It was a specific observation about a specific player's specific improvement, and there was a context in which that observation could be offered that was not a team debrief setting.
He did not examine too carefully what context that was.
After the debrief ended, he began packing his station.
He looked up.
Lyra was across the room, also packing, and she was looking at him.
Not the look she had given him in the meeting four weeks ago — the assessing, waiting look of someone deciding whether to engage. This was a different look. The look of someone who had done something they had set out to do and was checking whether the person who had made the task necessary had seen it.
He had seen it.
He looked back.
The look lasted — two seconds, maybe three, the kind of duration that was longer than accidental eye contact and shorter than deliberate communication, landing somewhere in the space between them that had been accumulating for weeks. Then, with the timing of something that had not been coordinated, they both looked away.
He looked at his station.
She looked at hers.
Kai, from somewhere to his left, made a sound that was not a word.
Ethan did not look at Kai.
---
The room emptied gradually.
Lyra left before he did — he heard her footsteps in the corridor, the specific pattern he could have identified in a crowd at this point, moving toward the women's practice room at the unhurried pace of someone who had finished what they came to do.
He stood at his station for a moment after the room was empty, in the particular quiet of a space that had recently held concentrated effort and was now releasing it.
He thought about the minute-twenty play.
He thought about fix the delay, which he had said in a debrief two weeks ago as a tactical observation and which she had apparently taken as a directive and acted on, not because he had said it but because it was accurate and she responded to accurate information the same way he did.
He thought about the look.
He thought about both of them looking away at the same time, which was either coincidence or the product of two people who were both very good at reading situations and had both read the same one simultaneously and arrived at the same conclusion about what to do with it.
He picked up his bag.
In the corridor, he walked past the women's practice room without slowing. Through the closed door he could hear nothing — no keyboard, no voice, just the quiet of a room where someone was sitting in the dark or the light doing whatever they did after a match that had gone the way this one had gone.
He took the stairs to his room.
He thought, on the stairs, about the specific quality of the look before they had both looked away. The thing it had contained. He had a word for it now — not interesting, not the placeholder he had been using for four weeks. A different word, more accurate, less convenient.
He did not say it out loud.
But he knew what it was.
