The Wednesday morning practice had a quality that Lyra noticed mid-session and filed without acting on, because acting on things mid-session was not how she operated.
She noticed it the way she noticed most things: peripherally, as a piece of information that existed alongside the primary information she was processing, available to be retrieved when she had the capacity to attend to it properly. The primary information was the match — decisions, timing, the accumulated read of a game state that was developing in a specific direction and would require a specific response at a specific moment. The peripheral information was: something is different today.
She won the note to herself and kept playing.
Coach Yeon called the session at noon.
"Best one yet," she said, in the particular tone she used when she had data to support the assessment and was offering it as fact rather than encouragement. "Across all metrics. We'll look at the footage this afternoon."
The team absorbed this with the specific quiet of people who had suspected it and were now confirmed. Not celebration — that came after results that were harder-won. Just the particular stillness of recognition.
Lyra packed her station and stayed when the others left.
---
She pulled up the session footage at twelve-fifteen.
She was looking for specific timestamps — moments she wanted to review, decisions she wanted to examine with the distance of post-match clarity rather than in-match pressure. This was her standard post-session process. She ran it the same way every time.
Thirty minutes into the review, she had found what she was looking for and several things she had not been looking for, and she had set down her pen and was looking at the screen with the particular expression she wore when a problem had clarified into something she was not sure she wanted to be clear.
The session had been better.
Not marginally better — measurably better, in the ways that mattered, in the specific metrics that Coach Yeon had referenced and in additional ones that Lyra tracked privately. Her read accuracy was up. Her execution gap was down. Her decision speed — the specific thing she had been working on since she wrote *83%* at the top of her notes page and underlined it — was at its best level since she had started tracking it.
She had been trying to understand why for the past twenty minutes.
The first answer she arrived at was legitimate: she had implemented an adjustment to her vision control rotation three days ago, and the adjustment had compounded in ways she had projected. This was a real contribution to the improvement. It was not, when she held it against the scale of the improvement, sufficient.
She thought about what else was different.
The answer arrived with the specific quality of answers that were correct and unwelcome simultaneously.
The men's team had not practiced this morning.
More specifically: Ethan Shen had not been in the building this morning.
---
She sat with this for a moment before she did anything with it.
The correct response to a hypothesis was to test it rather than accept or reject it immediately based on its desirability. She knew this. She applied it.
She opened her performance tracking file and went back through six weeks of session data — all of it, the whole record she had been maintaining since her second week at ZNT. She was looking for a pattern. She was hoping not to find one.
The pattern was there.
Not dramatic — she was not failing sessions when he was present, was not performing at a level that would be visible in the aggregate data that anyone else reviewed. But in her private tracking, the granular data that she collected and analyzed with the specificity that she brought to things she was working on deliberately, the pattern was present: a slight but consistent variance in her peak performance metrics that correlated with the men's team's practice schedule.
More specifically: with his schedule.
She cross-referenced against the days when the men's team had practiced but Ethan had been absent — two occasions, once when he had a school obligation, once when he had left early for a medical appointment. On those days, her numbers looked more like today's numbers.
She closed the tracking file.
She looked at the wall.
The explanation she did not want was this: some portion of her cognitive resources, on the days when she knew he was in the building, was allocated to an awareness that had nothing to do with the game. Not distraction in the way that distraction was usually described — she was not thinking about him during matches, was not losing focus in any way that would be visible from the outside. But there was a layer of awareness, thin and persistent, that was running in the background and that was costing her something she needed for the work.
She had been aware of his presence in the building.
Specifically aware. In the way you were specifically aware of things that occupied a particular quality of attention.
This was not a comfortable thing to understand about herself.
---
She sat with the uncomfortable understanding for a while, turning it over the way she turned over tactical problems — not to find the solution immediately, but to understand the shape of the problem before she reached for a solution.
The obvious interpretation was negative: she was letting something personal affect her professional performance, which was exactly the kind of thing she had prided herself on not letting happen. She had managed her internal state through two years of competitive play, through the Apex dissolution, through the decision to come to ZNT with all the history that decision carried. She had been good at the management.
The management, apparently, had a limit she had not previously located.
She thought about the alternative interpretation.
The awareness was not, she considered, a failure of management. It was a signal. The things that occupied a specific quality of your attention were the things that mattered to you — not in a general sense, but in a specific, real, this-affects-how-I-operate sense. She was not being distracted by something unimportant. She was being affected by something that was significant.
The significance was information.
Information could be worked with.
She was still working out what that meant when the door opened.
---
Zara came in with the specific surprised expression of someone who had expected an empty room.
"I thought everyone went to lunch," she said.
"I stayed."
"I can see that." Zara looked at the closed laptop, the pen set down, the general configuration of a person who had been sitting and thinking rather than working. She pulled a chair over — not her own station chair, the spare one that lived against the wall. She sat down. "You okay?"
"I figured something out," Lyra said. "I'm not sure I'm okay about it."
Zara looked at her.
Lyra looked at the wall for a moment. Then, because Zara had been the person she had said *I know* to, and because *I know* had been the beginning of something rather than the end of it, and because the figure she had just arrived at seemed to want to be said out loud to someone who would receive it without requiring elaboration:
"I played better today because he wasn't here."
She did not say the name. She thought she did not need to.
Zara was quiet for a moment.
"Not because he makes you worse," Zara said. Not a question.
"No. Because when he's here, I'm — " she looked for the word. "Present in a way that takes up space. And the space it takes up is space I need."
Zara nodded slowly. The nod of someone processing rather than agreeing.
"That means he matters," she said.
Lyra looked at her.
"Not as a problem," Zara continued. "As a — presence. The things that take up your attention are the things that matter. That's not a flaw. That's information."
She had thought this herself, approximately fifteen minutes ago, in slightly different language. Hearing it from someone else did something different to it — made it less like a conclusion she had argued herself into and more like something that was simply true, the way facts were true before you had to work to acknowledge them.
"I know," Lyra said.
The second time she had said that.
Zara looked at her with the expression she sometimes had — the one that was not a smile and not quite something else but sat at the edge of both.
"Good," she said. She stood up, returned the chair to its place against the wall. "Food is still happening, if you want some."
"I'll come in a minute."
Zara left.
Lyra sat alone in the practice room for a while longer, with the tracking data and the conclusion and the two times she had said *I know* and what both of them meant.
---
The corner that evening had the quality it had been developing over the weeks — not just a place, but a specific configuration of time and space that had accumulated its own meaning through repeated occupation.
She was there first.
She heard his footsteps before she saw him — the pace, the weight distribution, the specific quality she had learned without trying to. He came down the corridor and sat down in the place he usually sat, and the corner was the corner again, with both of them in it.
Neither of them said anything.
She was aware of him the way she had been aware of him all day — the awareness she had identified and named and decided to stop arguing with. It was present. It took up a specific amount of the available attention. It did not prevent her from also being aware of the courtyard below, and the evening light, and the notebook she was holding, and the question she had been sitting with since noon.
She thought about *that means he matters.*
She thought about sitting in a room doing her best work in the morning and sitting in a corner doing nothing in particular in the evening, and how both of these things were true at the same time, and how the two truths were not in conflict with each other but were simply both present, the way multiple true things could be present simultaneously when you stopped insisting that only one of them could be right.
She had spent a long time insisting.
She had stopped insisting.
He was looking out the window. She was looking at the notebook. The city was doing its evening things. The corner was being what it had become.
She let it all be true at once.
This was new.
This was, she thought, the right thing.
