ZNT held a shared dinner once per season.
Ethan had attended the previous one — his first, eight months ago, before the women's team existed — and had found it adequate in the way that org events were adequate: they served a legitimate function, they did not require more than his physical presence and a reasonable amount of social participation, and they ended within a predictable timeframe. He had no complaints about them. He also had no particular enthusiasm for them.
This one would be different in one specific way: there would be twice as many people.
He arrived at the dining area at six fifty-eight, which was two minutes before the announced start time, which was his standard approach to events that did not require preparation but did require presence. The food had arrived — several large containers from a place he recognized as the one the building's residents defaulted to when they wanted something good without much coordination. Someone had made a reasonable decision.
He found his usual configuration: corner position, back to the wall, clear sightlines to the room. This was not a tactical choice for this specific event. It was simply where he sat when he had options.
Kai arrived thirty seconds later and took the adjacent seat with the ease of a person who had been sitting next to Ethan in various configurations for two years.
"This is nice," Kai said, surveying the room.
"It's a dinner," Ethan said.
"It's a dinner with more people than usual, which makes it more interesting than usual." Kai reached for the nearest container. "Interesting is nice."
Ethan did not have a counterargument to this. He also reached for food.
---
The room filled over the next ten minutes.
The seating that emerged was not cleanly divided by team — the dining area was not large enough for that, and the natural human tendency to distribute across available space had produced a configuration that was more mixed than either team's internal dynamics would have predicted. Ethan noted this without opinion. Mixed seating at a shared dinner was neither a problem nor a significant development. It was the spatial outcome of the available geometry.
The women's team distributed across the table in small clusters — Bao Chau and Ha Linh at one end, Ngoc Mai and Coach Yeon in conversation near the middle, Zara and Lyra taking seats on the same side as Ethan's end of the table but several positions removed.
Not adjacent. Not directly across.
Diagonally offset, approximately four seats down: close enough that the room's ambient noise was not an obstacle, far enough that conversation required direction.
Ethan processed this and redirected his attention to his food.
---
The dinner was, in fact, more interesting than he had anticipated.
This was Kai's influence, he suspected — Kai had a quality that made conversations expand rather than contract in his presence, a specific kind of social ease that produced genuine exchange rather than parallel performance. Within twenty minutes, the table had developed a dynamic that crossed team lines without anyone having explicitly decided to cross them. Ha Linh and the men's team's jungler had apparently been following the same streamer without knowing it, and this discovery produced a conversation that was both animated and technically specific in ways that Ethan found more engaging than he had expected.
He contributed to this conversation approximately twice, on specific points where he had relevant information. Otherwise, he listened.
Listening, he had been noticing, was different from observing. Observing was active — he reached for information, tracked it, categorized it. Listening was something more like receiving: letting the information arrive without reaching, trusting that what mattered would surface.
He had been practicing this, with mixed results, since he had written *The answer and everyone having the answer are different outcomes* in his notebook five days ago.
He was practicing it now.
And then, from four seats down and slightly to the left, he heard a voice in the specific register he had learned to recognize across a variety of acoustic environments.
---
He was not trying to listen.
This was the honest account of what happened: the conversation at the Ethan-and-Kai end of the table had reached a natural pause, and in that pause, the ambient sound profile of the room had briefly rearranged itself in a way that made one specific conversation more audible than the others.
He caught the end of a sentence: *"...not about the damage at all, it's about when the information arrives."
He knew the voice.
He did not decide to continue listening. He simply did not redirect his attention.
*"If you delay the ward placement by three seconds,"* the voice continued, *"you change the entire information landscape for the next forty-five seconds. The damage is the same. The vision is the same. But the timing of when you know something — that's what changes everything."
He recognized the problem being described.
Not in the abstract — specifically, as the problem he had been working on in his own analysis for the past week: a specific gap in his team's mid-game vision sequencing that was costing them information at a critical transition window. He had identified the gap. He had not, despite several hours of attempted solutions, found an approach that addressed it elegantly.
The approach being sketched in a conversation four seats away, between two people who were not thinking about him at all, was elegant.
He listened.
*"The thing is,"* the voice said, *"you can't think about it as a support decision. You have to think about it as a team information decision that the support is executing. As soon as you frame it as your job to place the ward, you optimize for placement. When you frame it as the team's job to have information at the right time, and your role is to make that happen, you optimize for timing."
He had never heard this framing before.
He had been optimizing for placement.
The realization arrived with the specific quality of understanding that came from hearing a thing said in exactly the right way — not new information, exactly, but existing information assembled differently so that its implications became visible in a way they had not been before.
He did not move. He did not look in that direction. He held the realization and continued eating his food.
---
The conversation continued for another few minutes — he caught fragments, lost the thread when another conversation intersected, caught it again. The solution being described was not complete — it was more like a direction than a map — but the direction was correct, and the direction was the thing he had not had.
He thought about the notebook entry: *The answer and everyone having the answer are different outcomes.*
He thought about Wednesday afternoon, and the practice room door, and the room full of people who had arrived at a synthesis that Lyra had already held.
He thought about the specific quality of intelligence that operated this way — not through direct provision of answers, but through the patient arrangement of conditions in which answers became accessible. He had been trying to understand this quality all week. He thought he was understanding it better now, having watched it work on him.
He had been the person in the room who didn't know.
He had arrived at something, sitting at this table, in a way that had felt like his own discovery — because it had been his own discovery, reached through his own processing of information that had arrived without announcement.
She had not told him the answer.
She had described the problem in the right language, to someone else, in a room where he happened to be present.
He wondered if this was intentional.
He decided, on reflection, that it almost certainly was not. She had been talking to Zara. She had not been talking to him. The fact that he had been in a position to receive the information was an accident of geometry and ambient sound and a dinner table that was not quite large enough to maintain clean separation between conversations.
The fact that he had received it anyway was not an accident.
He thought about the difference.
---
At some point, the conversation four seats down reached a natural conclusion.
He was aware of the shift in the acoustic environment — the conversation he had been partially tracking had ended, replaced by the general ambient sound of the table returning to its distributed configuration. He looked at his plate and found it approximately half empty, which meant he had been eating throughout, which was good.
He looked up.
Not in any specific direction. Just the natural reorientation of attention after a period of focused listening.
Across the table and four seats down, Lyra was also looking up — the same refocusing motion, the return to the wider room after a concentrated exchange. And in the two seconds of reorientation, before either of them had chosen a new focus, they were looking in the same general direction at the same general moment.
Eye contact. Brief. Incidental.
She looked away. He looked away.
The same time, not coordinated.
Kai, to his left, was saying something about the streamer. Ethan responded appropriately. The dinner continued.
---
He went to his practice room afterward.
Not to practice — he had no session tonight, and the hour was late enough that starting one would not be worthwhile. He went because it was the space he went to when he needed to think, and he needed to think, and the alternative was his room which was where he slept and where thinking tended to become circular rather than productive.
He sat at his station without turning on the monitor.
He opened his notebook to the page with the entry he had been adding to.
*The answer and everyone having the answer are different outcomes.* *Consider the difference between solving and enabling.*
He wrote a third line: *Sometimes the answer comes from the direction you weren't looking.*
He looked at the three lines.
They had all come from her — not directly, not intentionally, not in the way of someone who was trying to teach him things. They had come from watching her, and listening to her, and being present in spaces she was also present in. The notebook was becoming a record of what he had learned from paying a specific kind of attention to a specific person.
He had not set out to learn these things.
He had been learning them anyway, because she was who she was, and he was paying attention, and the two conditions together produced this.
He thought about the word *gratitude.*
It was not the word he would have predicted himself using, a few months ago, in connection with another person at his organization. It was not a word he used often in any context. But sitting in the practice room with the notebook open to three lines that had come from her without her knowing they had come from her, it was the most accurate word he had.
Gratitude.
For the answer he had not been looking for, and the direction it had come from, and the person who had not known she was giving it.
He did not know what to do with gratitude that had no recipient — gratitude for something the person had not done intentionally, that they did not know had been received, that could not be acknowledged without explaining a chain of events that included standing outside a half-open door and sitting within earshot at a dinner table.
He sat with it for a while.
Then he went to his room.
The thinking, for once, did not become circular.
