The letter had been written on a Tuesday in October, forty-three years ago, by a man named Henri Collard who had been twenty-four years old and who had been a schoolteacher in a village outside Lyon and who had been conscripted into a conflict whose name Adeline did not know because Raymond had not told her and she had not asked.
The letter was addressed to a woman named Claire. It was three pages long in the kind of handwriting that started careful and became less careful as it went, the way handwriting changed when the writer had stopped thinking about the writing and was thinking only about what they needed to say. It had been sealed but never sent — or had been sent and returned, or had found its way into the world by some other route — and it had ended up in the collection of a Florentine archivist who had acquired it forty years ago and who had contacted Raymond through a mutual correspondent six weeks ago with the specific kind of inquiry that such archivists made when they had something they did not know what to do with.
Raymond had not read the letter. He had explained this to Adeline as part of the test briefing, in the matter-of-fact tone he used for operational parameters: he had not read the letter because he would be building the compound from the object's olfactory residue, and knowing the content in advance would bias the compound formulation toward the known narrative rather than allowing the scent record to speak for itself. This was good scientific practice and also, she had come to understand, the way Raymond Vance treated all forms of intimacy with other people's interior lives — with a scrupulous respect for their right to be approached on their own terms.
The full dress rehearsal was Adeline's idea. Three weeks before the Exposition, with the machine as close to complete as it was going to be before the final day's assembly, they needed a full protocol run — beginning to end, no stops, under conditions as close to Exposition conditions as the laboratory could simulate.
She stood at the center of the cleared bench space in the position that the Exposition's audience members would occupy — not sitting, standing, because the Exposition presentation would be a standing demonstration, which was Raymond's choice and which she understood: standing changed the quality of reception, kept people more alert, more present in their own bodies.
He initiated the sequence from his station without preamble. They had done this enough times that preamble had become unnecessary; the beginning of the sequence was itself the signal.
The compound arrived in the way she had come to know his compounds arrived: in layers, patiently, each element establishing itself before the next came forward. Old paper first — the specific smell of paper that had been stored in reasonable conditions for many decades, not the sharp mustiness of neglect but the deeper, more complex smell of something that had been preserved by being cared for. Ink. The specific iron gall ink of the period, with its characteristic brown-black quality, different from the bluer inks of contemporary correspondence.
The second layer was personal. She had no other word for it — the specific residue of a person's hands, the compound of skin oil and whatever the hands had touched, the trace presence of a body that had held this paper and held it closely and held it for a long time in the way you held something you were not ready to seal and send.
Then the room.
It arrived all at once, the way rooms did — not as a list of elements but as an atmosphere, a complete sensory environment. A kitchen in the early morning, autumn light through a window that faced east. Bread. Coffee, very strong. Wood smoke from a stove that had been burning since before dawn. Somewhere outside, the sound she could not hear but could smell the echo of: the village, waking up, doing the things villages did when the men who belonged to them were about to be absent.
She was in the moment of the letter being written.
This was what the machine could do that she had known intellectually and was now knowing in the specific way that you knew things when they happened to you rather than when you read about them: it put you inside the emotional atmosphere of a recorded moment with a fidelity that was not metaphor and not approximation but actual, felt, received. The man writing the letter was twenty-four and he had been up since before the light and he was writing to Claire and the coffee was getting cold and the bread was untouched and he knew — she knew, she was receiving his knowing — that he was writing this letter because some letters needed to be written regardless of whether they would arrive.
Regardless of whether there would be someone to receive them.
The peak of the compound arrived and she stood inside the full weight of a moment that had occurred forty-three years ago in a kitchen she had never entered, received through the medium of a letter she had not read, given to her by a machine that she had built with her own hands from her own design in collaboration with a person who was standing twelve feet away from her and watching her receive it.
She was not crying. She was something beyond crying — she was in a state that was very still and very present and that had, in some part of her that she did not usually consult in the context of laboratory work, recognized something in this moment that was not strictly about Henri Collard or his letter to Claire.
Raymond turned off the machine.
The sound of it cycling down was familiar, the specific deceleration of the distillation sequence resolving. She heard it and she was still in the kitchen in the early morning forty-three years ago and she was also in the laboratory and the two locations were both completely real.
She heard him cross the room.
He stopped in front of her — close, closer than the technical distance, the distance that was not about the work. She looked up at him. His expression was the one she had watched develop across all the weeks since the first integration test, the uncertain expression, but it was further along now, more specific, less uncertain than uncertain-about-what-to-do-with-a-known-thing.
"The man who wrote the letter," she said. "He knew he wasn't coming back."
"Yes."
"But he wrote anyway."
"Yes." His voice was lower than usual, the quality it had in the middle of the night when they sat in the laboratory without working.
"Because some things need to be said," she said, which was what he had said to her, and she was saying it back to him because it was true and because some truths needed to be said twice to be fully received.
"Yes," he said. "Because some things need to be said regardless of the outcome."
She looked at him. He looked at her. The laboratory was very quiet.
His hand came up slowly — she tracked it peripherally, this hand she knew, the hands she had examined in the first weeks, the acid marks and the scar on the wrist. It came up and it did not quite arrive. It stopped in the air beside her face, close enough that she could feel the warmth of it, not touching, not quite touching, with the quality of a question being asked without language.
She leaned slightly toward it.
The knock on the front door was three sharp raps, the sound of someone who had been told to make sure the occupant heard.
They both went still.
Then: footsteps on the front step, the sound of a delivery notice being slid under the door, footsteps retreating.
The components. The final three precision components from the Genoa supplier that she had ordered two weeks ago and that had apparently arrived today, which was an excellent logistical outcome that she was having some difficulty being grateful for in this precise moment.
Raymond lowered his hand. She straightened. They stood in the laboratory in the aftermath of the compound and the not-quite-touch and the knock on the door, and she was aware of all three simultaneously with a clarity that the compound had, apparently, heightened rather than dulled.
She crossed to the front door and picked up the delivery notice. She was aware of him behind her — not watching her in any intrusive sense, simply present in the way he was always present, the specific quality of Raymond Vance's attention in the room.
She turned around.
He was standing at the bench, looking at her. Not at the notice. At her. With the expression that was no longer uncertain in the way it had been uncertain at the beginning but was very clear about what it was and was simply — waiting. Not for her decision. For her readiness.
"The components are at the delivery office," she said. "I'll collect them this afternoon."
"Yes," he said.
She folded the notice and put it in her pocket with the key and the vial, and she returned to the bench, and they completed the calibration notes for the full dress rehearsal, and the results were the best they had produced, and she wrote them in the test log in careful precise handwriting, and neither of them said anything about what had not quite happened.
But when she left, later, she turned at the side entrance doorway and found him watching her from across the laboratory with an expression that she could read entirely, and she thought: soon.
