Three components remained.
Adeline had arranged them on her side of the bench: the precision spring cluster she had collected from the delivery office that afternoon, the micro-calibration disc she had machined two weeks ago and set aside for final assembly, and the pressure membrane that had required three iterations to get right and that was now, definitively, right. Three components. When they were in place, the machine would be functionally complete — not finished in the sense of refinement and adjustment and the thousand small improvements that could theoretically be made indefinitely, but complete in the sense of being the thing it was designed to be.
She and Raymond had worked through the afternoon and into the evening without discussing the evening or why they were still there. The compressed timeline provided cover — there was always a reason to stay, always another calibration to run, always another test sequence to document. She was aware that both of them were using the work as cover and that both of them knew they were using it as cover and that this knowledge did not prevent either of them from continuing to use it.
At nine o'clock the messenger arrived.
Raymond received him at the door while she continued working, and she heard the brief exchange — three sentences, a pause, a murmured response — and then the door closing and his footsteps returning. The quality of the footsteps was different. She had learned to read his footsteps the way she read pressure gauge readings: the speed, the weight distribution, the presence or absence of hesitation. These footsteps had hesitation in them.
She set down the spring cluster and turned.
He was holding a folded document, the official cream paper of the Academy. He crossed to his bench and set it down and looked at it for a moment before he looked at her.
"Voss has filed a formal investigation request with the Academy," he said. "By name. The investigation is into quote, the development and use of unauthorized cognitive intervention technology by a non-accredited practitioner, unquote." He paused. "The request was filed today. The Academy's review process typically takes a minimum of six weeks before any formal finding."
She calculated. Six weeks from today was two weeks after the Exposition registration deadline. It was four weeks after the Exposition itself.
"If they expedite it," she said.
"If they expedite the review, which Voss will request and which he has relationships sufficient to obtain, the preliminary finding could come within three weeks. Before the Exposition."
"Can a preliminary finding prevent us from presenting?"
"The Exposition committee has a clause about practitioners under formal institutional investigation. It's not absolute — it requires a majority vote of the committee to invoke — but it exists and it can be invoked." He turned the document over. "Voss will know this. He will be planning for the committee vote."
She turned the calculation over, looking for the angles. The Guild complaint from before had failed because the city code didn't give the Guild jurisdiction over cognitive science. This was different — this was the Academy's internal process, and the Academy had jurisdiction over who was permitted to present at the Exposition under its institutional umbrella.
"We're registered under my name," she said. "The de Monet name."
"Yes. The investigation is against me specifically."
"Which means if we reframe the Exposition registration to emphasize —" She stopped. She could see where the sentence was going and she could also see that where the sentence was going was the same place Leonard's offer had been going, the same place Viviane's original approach had been going, the same conclusion that everyone except her and Raymond had been arriving at since the beginning.
The machine existed. It worked. It was extraordinary. It could be presented under her name alone, with Raymond's contribution documented but not foregrounded, and the Exposition committee would have nothing to invoke and Voss would have no target and Viviane would have achieved, through this investigation, the same outcome she had been trying to achieve from the beginning.
"No," she said.
Raymond looked at her.
"That's not the solution I'm proposing," she said. "I just needed to see it clearly to reject it clearly." She sat back from the bench. "The solution is a counter-challenge filed directly with the Academy's ethics committee. Not a response to the investigation — a pre-emptive challenge to the investigation's basis. The Academy's own rules of procedure require that any formal investigation of a non-accredited practitioner must demonstrate that the work falls within a domain the Academy has previously established jurisdiction over. Cognitive olfactory science is not a domain the Academy has established jurisdiction over. It has no charter article that covers it."
He was looking at her with an expression she recognized as the one he wore when she had solved something he had been working on and had found the approach he had missed.
"The challenge needs to be filed by someone with Academy standing," he said.
"I know."
"You are not an Academy member."
"No. But my father is an honorary corresponding member, which grants him standing to file procedural challenges." She looked at the document on his bench. "And there is a rule — rarely invoked, but extant — that allows a non-member with documented collaborative standing to file jointly with an honorary member." She paused. "Which means I file jointly with my father. Which means the de Monet name is attached to a direct challenge to Voss's investigation. Which means Florence knows, officially and on record, where we stand."
She said *we.* Not *I.* Not *the project.* We.
The word sat between them in the quiet laboratory.
"Your father," he said.
"I'll speak to him tomorrow morning. He'll understand the procedural argument — he's a careful man, he'll see it correctly. The question is whether he'll agree to put his name to it." She thought about the dinner, her father's face when she had said *partner,* the quality of his silence before he had not pushed further. "I believe he will."
Raymond was quiet for a long moment. Outside, Florence had gone into its late-night mode, the city reduced to its essential sounds — distant wheels on cobblestones, the occasional voice, the particular silence of a city that was not asleep but was resting.
"Adeline."
She looked at him.
"If you file this challenge," he said carefully, precisely, the way he said things that had been thought about from all sides, "Florence will know, officially, publicly, in the Academy's formal record, that you have chosen to defend my work against Voss. Against the Guild. Against Leonard." He met her eyes. "I need you to understand that I understand what that means for you. For your reputation. For the workshop's position. For everything that comes after this, regardless of the Exposition outcome."
She understood. She had understood since the moment she saw the solution clearly, which was the same moment she had rejected the alternative. The calculation had been done. The calculation had a clear result.
"I know what it means," she said. "I've done the calculation."
"And?"
"And I'm asking you something." She looked at him steadily. "Is this work worth defending?"
He was still. The machine was between them, almost-complete, the three final components waiting in their precise arrangement on her side of the bench. The laboratory was warm. The night was doing what nights did.
"Yes," he said. "It is."
"That's what I needed to know." She stood. "I'll file tonight, through the family's correspondent at the Academy. It can be in the morning's record before Voss's people know it's coming."
She went to the writing desk in the corner of the laboratory — she had commandeered it six weeks ago for project documentation and Raymond had not reclaimed it — and drafted the filing. It took twenty minutes. She wrote carefully, the way she wrote things that would matter, and then she folded it and sealed it and called her regular messenger.
When the messenger had gone she stood at the window and looked at the street below, the ordinary Florence street at midnight, and felt the specific quality of having done something that couldn't be undone and being certain it was correct.
She heard Raymond stand. She heard him cross the room, and she knew from the sound of his footsteps — their pace, their particular weight — that he was not going to his bench.
He stopped beside her at the window.
The street was empty. The gas lamp at the corner made its light. She was aware of the three components on the bench, and the filed challenge in a sealed envelope on its way to the correspondent's house, and the vial in her left pocket, and the key, and the specific warmth of him standing close enough that the edge of his sleeve was touching the edge of her sleeve.
Neither of them said anything.
Neither of them moved away.
She looked at the street and he looked at the street and the night held them both in it, and the work was nearly done, and everything that came after the work — all of it, whatever it was — was very close now.
She turned her head slightly, just enough to see his profile in the lamplight.
He turned, at the same moment, and looked at her.
The three components were on the bench. The challenge had been filed. Florence was sleeping. The work had four weeks left.
And there was nothing in the space between them that was not exactly what it was.
