The Academy's response to the counter-challenge arrived not as a letter but as a bureaucratic instrument: a Request for Supporting Documentation, twelve pages long, in the specific dense official language that meant the institution was not going to simply dismiss the challenge and was also not going to simply accept it. It meant the challenge had landed in a space where someone powerful enough to require documentation but not powerful enough to refuse consideration entirely had received it.
Adeline read it at the laboratory bench while Raymond read over her shoulder, which was a new proximity that had established itself since three nights ago without either of them having discussed establishing it.
"They're asking for evidence of original research authorship," she said. "Dated documentation proving the compound architecture predates any claimed prior work by Voss or his students."
"I have the original notebooks," Raymond said. "Dating back seven years. Voss would need to produce documentation claiming prior work from before that period, which he can't, because the work didn't exist before that period."
"The hardship documentation is a different issue."
"The two-year restriction records."
"They want the full file." She turned a page. "Raymond — they're asking for the self-experiment documentation from that period."
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "Yes. I expected that."
She looked at him. He was reading the document over her shoulder, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him — a fact about proximity that she was still updating her sense of normal to accommodate, in the specific way that adjustments to normal happened: gradually and then suddenly. "Are you comfortable providing it?"
"I don't have the option of comfort," he said. "I have the option of truth or not-truth. The file is complete and accurate and it shows exactly what I did and why. If that's a liability, it's one I chose."
She looked back at the document. The Academy's twelve pages were carefully designed to be exhausting without being clearly unreasonable — each request individually defensible, collectively a burden intended to test whether the challenge had the resources to persist. It was the institution operating at the level of institutional self-protection: not corrupt, exactly, but protective of the structure that gave it authority.
"Ten days," she said.
"Ten days."
"I'll draft the response. You provide the documentation package. We have the materials — it's an assembly problem, not a research problem."
He moved back to his bench, which he was still doing in the new proximity — still moving between their sides, but with less of the careful protocol that had governed it in the early months. The eighteen-inch border existed now as a memory of a border rather than an active one. She was still getting accustomed to this.
At ten o'clock her father arrived.
She had not told Raymond. This was not, she told herself, deliberate — she had mentioned the possibility of her father visiting during the response-drafting period, and had meant to mention it more concretely, and had not, and was now standing in the side entrance watching Édouard de Monet cross the laboratory toward Raymond Vance with the expression of a man who had been thinking about someone for a specific period of time and had decided to form his own opinion.
Raymond looked up from his bench. Looked at Édouard. Looked at Adeline. The reading look — fast, comprehensive, cataloguing the situation.
"Mr. Vance," her father said, with the specific courtesy of a man whose courtesy was genuine rather than performed. "I apologize for appearing without more formal notice. I'm Édouard de Monet."
"I know," Raymond said. "Come in."
The meeting that followed was not what she had expected, which was because she had expected a meeting and what occurred was something closer to an examination. Her father did not ask many questions. He asked the questions he had, precisely, and then he watched. He watched Raymond work — Raymond continued working while they talked, which was correct and which her father seemed to understand as correct, the way one craftsman understood another. He watched Raymond and Adeline in the laboratory together. He watched the specific quality of the space they inhabited together, the way their movements were calibrated to each other, the way the laboratory had been organized by two people who had been in it together long enough for the organization to reflect both of them.
Her father said very little during the first hour. He accepted coffee. He asked two technical questions about the machine that Raymond answered with the precision he brought to all technical questions — no condescension, no abbreviation, the full answer. Her father understood enough of the answer to ask a third question, which Raymond answered with a kind of surprised respect, the expression of someone who had not expected the person across from them to be capable of following.
Adeline worked on the Academy response document and listened to all of this from her side of the bench.
Before he left, her father touched Raymond on the arm — a small gesture, the kind Édouard de Monet made when he was communicating something he had decided was worth communicating physically rather than verbally — and said something she could not hear. She was at her bench, ten meters away, her pen moving steadily across the response document.
She heard Raymond's reply: *"I know."*
Her father left.
She waited until the front door had closed and then said, still writing: "What did he say?"
Raymond was at his bench with his back to her. He turned around. His expression had the quality of someone carrying information they were still processing. "He said: she doesn't know how to receive help. If you give her something, she'll try to return it double. Don't let her."
She set down her pen.
"He said that."
"Verbatim."
She looked at the response document in front of her. Three pages of carefully constructed argument in defense of a counter-challenge she had filed on behalf of both of them, the latest in a series of actions she had taken in response to external threats directed at the project and at Raymond, each one feeling to her like the obvious response to the situation and now, through the specific lens of her father's observation, also looking like something else: a person who was more comfortable giving than receiving, and who had found, in the external threats, a way to be useful that did not require her to acknowledge what she was actually doing.
"He's right," she said. "About the first part."
"I know he is. I've been watching it." Raymond crossed his arms, not in the defensive posture but in the way he stood when he was being precise about something. "You paid for the tailor for the masquerade and called it project logistics. You drafted the Academy response and called it a documentation problem. You spoke in my defense at the dạ hội and called it tactical positioning."
She looked at him. "Those were all also those things."
"Yes. They were also care." He said the word with the same evenness he used for technical terms. "You're allowed to care about someone without it needing to be a transaction."
She picked up her pen. Put it down again. "I'm trying not to," she said. "Make it a transaction. I'm aware of the pattern."
"I know you are." He turned back to his bench. "I'm watching." A pause. "Adeline."
She looked up.
"He also said: I think he knows." The corner of his mouth moved. "Your father is a perceptive man."
She looked at the response document. Outside, Florence was continuing. The Academy had ten days of her life in its bureaucratic hands. The Exposition was three weeks away. Her father had met Raymond Vance and had said three sentences and had, in those three sentences, communicated something about all four of them — her, her father, Raymond, and the specific shape of what was happening between them — more efficiently than she had managed in three months of careful observation.
"Perceptive," she said. "Yes. That's one word for it."
She returned to the response document and wrote for the rest of the afternoon with the specific focused efficiency of someone who is also thinking about something else.
