Florence knew.
This was not, Adeline reflected, a surprise. Florence had known things about her since before she was in a position to form opinions about what Florence knew — had tracked her birth, her father's business fortunes, her unconventional education, her failure to marry at the expected age, her increasingly peculiar professional activities, with the comprehensive interest of a city-sized social organism that experienced individual lives as data points in a larger pattern it was always in the process of interpreting.
What Florence knew this week was different in degree rather than kind. The counter-challenge to the Academy had placed her name in official records in association with Raymond Vance's in a way that was not speculative or social but legal and permanent. Florence had been speculating for months. Florence now had documentation.
She knew all of this before Marguerite's note arrived, but Marguerite's note arrived anyway.
*I heard Florence is saying interesting things. Lunch. Not so I can ask — so I can tell you what's being said so you can prepare. Also the asparagus at Ricci is exceptional right now and you look like someone who needs asparagus.*
She went.
Marguerite was already at the table when she arrived, which Marguerite always was — Marguerite operated on the principle that being the person who was already seated when others arrived was a form of hospitality, and she had maintained this principle since they were schoolgirls and it had never not been exactly right. She was small and precise and wore her hair in a style that was fashionable without being effortful, and she had, for as long as Adeline had known her, the specific quality of someone who had decided to enjoy her life and was succeeding at it with more intention than most people brought to the project.
"You look tired," Marguerite said, when Adeline sat down.
"I'm not tired," Adeline said.
"You look like someone who's not tired but has been awake for reasons that are not work."
"Is there a difference in the appearance?"
"A very specific one. The work-tired look is here" — Marguerite indicated her own forehead, slightly — "and the not-work-not-tired look is here." She indicated a region around the eyes that Adeline could not specifically identify but recognized as accurate.
Adeline ordered the asparagus.
Marguerite's report was comprehensive and delivered with the specific quality of someone who was providing intelligence rather than gossip — the difference being that gossip was offered for its entertainment value and intelligence was offered for its utility. She had spent the past week, apparently, listening carefully to what Florence was saying, which was her ordinary practice and which was why she had been consistently useful to know.
The picture was this: Florence's social layer had divided into three camps. The first camp — larger than Adeline had expected, containing several people whose opinions she had not credited with flexibility — held that the Academy challenge was a legitimate professional action and that the project's work was serious and that the question of Miss de Monet's personal entanglements was separate from the question of the work's merit. The second camp — Viviane's camp, expected — held that Adeline had been manipulated, that Raymond Vance was a dangerous eccentric, and that the correct response was sympathy and extraction. The third camp — the interesting one — held no strong opinion about any of these questions but was watching with considerable attention because the story was one of the more interesting stories Florence had produced in several years.
"The third camp," Adeline said.
"Is most of Florence, honestly. Florence likes a story. Yours has been an exceptionally good story."
"I hadn't thought of it as a story."
"That's because you're inside it." Marguerite ate asparagus with the focused pleasure of someone who had recommended a dish and was demonstrating its quality. "The question I actually want to ask you, which I told you I wasn't going to ask, is: how are you?"
"You said you weren't going to ask."
"I said I wasn't going to ask about the project or about Raymond Vance. I'm asking about you. Those are different questions."
Adeline looked at her glass of water. She had been asked this question by several people in the past weeks — her father, in his way; a few of the social acquaintances in their various ways; once, she was fairly certain, by Raymond himself, though he had phrased it as *you're eating less than usual* which was his idiom for concern. She had given the same answer to all of them: fine, the work is demanding, things will settle after the Exposition.
She looked at Marguerite, who had known her for eighteen years and who was not going to be satisfied by the standard answer, and who was also not going to push, because Marguerite understood when to wait.
"I'm doing the best work of my life," Adeline said. "The machine is extraordinary. The Exposition is in three weeks and I believe we will win it." She paused. "And I'm doing it with someone who is — the best person I've worked with. The only person I've worked with, really, in any genuine sense. And that second part is —" She stopped.
"Frightening," Marguerite said.
"Unfamiliar."
"Those aren't different things."
Adeline ate asparagus and considered this. It was true in the way that Marguerite's observations were often true — simply and completely, without requiring extensive analysis to arrive at.
"I don't know how to handle it," she said. Not as a complaint — as a statement of fact, the way she stated measurements. "I'm very good at work. I'm less practiced at — the other thing. Alongside work. I keep trying to convert it into work so I know what to do with it."
"Raymond Vance as a project to be completed."
"Not quite. More like — the feelings as data to be analyzed rather than things to be felt."
"That's the same thing, differently worded."
"Possibly."
Marguerite set down her fork. "Adeline. You know this. You don't need me to tell you what to do. You need —" She thought for a moment. "You need permission, maybe. From someone outside your own head. Permission to not have a protocol for this."
Adeline looked at her. The restaurant was doing its midday business around them, Florence in its ordinary lunch mode, indifferent and present.
"It's all right not to know how," Marguerite said. "That's what makes it the second thing and not the first thing."
She walked back to the laboratory after lunch by the long route, through the streets she knew well, with the specific quality of mental state that resulted from having said true things out loud to someone who received them well. It was, she reflected, a feeling she should have been engineering more frequently. Auguste had been her equivalent of Marguerite once — the person who received true things without requiring them to be justified — and she had lost that when she lost the ability to be in Auguste's presence without the guilt, and she had not replaced it.
She was replacing it. Slowly, with several people at once. Her father, in his way. Marguerite. And Raymond, who received everything — the technical and the personal and the things she said at three in the morning when she had stopped filtering — with the same focused quality of attention, the quality that said: *I am here, completely, for as long as this takes.*
She arrived at the laboratory and came in through the side entrance and found Raymond at his bench in the particular posture of deep concentration, the one where his whole body had oriented toward the work and the work was receiving all of him.
He looked up. Reading look. Settled.
"Lunch good?" he asked.
"Marguerite was there."
"Informative, then."
She sat at her bench and picked up the Academy response document. "She told me what Florence is saying."
"And?"
"Florence is saying many things. The interesting camp is the one that's just watching." She found her place in the document. "Florence likes a story, apparently. Ours has been a good one."
He looked at her for a moment — the reading look, settling into the other kind, the one that was not analytical but was still completely attentive. "Has it been?"
She looked at the document in her hands. Three months of work and a machine and a counter-challenge and two people who had, somewhere in the building of a thing, built another thing entirely. The whole of it, seen from the outside, as Florence saw it: as a story with a shape.
"Yes," she said. "A very good one."
She returned to the document. He returned to his work. Outside, Florence continued to watch, and the story continued, and the asparagus had been exactly as good as Marguerite had promised.
