The aftermath of the presentation had the quality of a tide coming in.
It arrived in waves. The first wave was the jury — Dr. Ferrara and the German judge she had met on the first morning and four others whose names she was tracking with the part of her attention that was managing professional obligations while the rest of her was still in the gallery during the presentation, still watching the audience receive what they had built.
The jury had technical questions. Raymond answered most of them and she answered the others and they answered some of them together, the collaboration working the same way it worked in the laboratory: naturally, without negotiation, each picking up what the other had left and carrying it forward. The German judge made notes for an extended period. Dr. Ferrara said, at the end of the technical discussion: *"The compound calibration methodology is the most sophisticated I've encountered in this field. I'd like to submit a formal request for documentation for the jury's technical review."* Raymond said he would provide it. She wrote it in the presentation log.
The second wave was Florence.
Florence's social layer had been waiting for the jury to finish with a patience that was specifically the patience of people who had been here the whole time and had prior claim on the conversation. Adeline navigated this wave with the competence of someone who had been navigating Florence's social waters since childhood, which was to say she did it well and without enjoyment and with a continuous background awareness of what the conversations were actually about as distinct from what they appeared to be about.
What they appeared to be about: the machine, the presentation, the experience of receiving the Castellano compound, the question of what this meant for the city's cultural life and the Exposition's legacy.
What they were actually about: the question of where this placed the de Monet name, the question of where this placed Raymond Vance, and the question of how Florence was going to integrate the fact that something extraordinary had just happened in its midst and that the people who had made it were, by the city's own logic, improbable candidates for having done so.
She answered the surface questions efficiently and let the real questions answer themselves through the evidence of what had just occurred.
The third wave was the press.
The Turin journalist she had briefed that morning; two Florentine papers; a correspondent from a Paris weekly who had apparently been in the gallery and had not been expected. She gave consistent statements, declined to speculate about the Grand Prix, and directed technical questions to Raymond.
By five o'clock the gallery had thinned to the ambient crowd of the Crystal Palace's late afternoon, and she was standing near the machine with a glass of water that had been pressed on her by someone she could not now identify, and the tide was going out.
Raymond appeared beside her. He had been at the far end of the gallery for the past twenty minutes, she had been aware of his location with the continuous low-level awareness that she was apparently going to be maintaining, and he had been doing the same thing she had been doing on his side of the space: managing the human requirements of a presentation that had gone well.
He looked tired. Not the work-tired that she had learned to read as his normal operating state — the other kind, the kind that came from sustained social effort, from being present and precise in a context that required both for an extended period without the relief of laboratory silence.
She handed him her glass of water. He drank half of it and handed it back.
"Voss," she said.
"I know," he said. "He's been in my peripheral vision for the past hour."
"He's moving toward us."
Raymond looked at her. She watched him make the decision — the same kind of decision she had watched him make at the compound station during the presentation, the one that was about what to do with the information he had and the options available to him. She watched him choose.
He turned to face the gallery.
Voss was crossing the third gallery with the specific deliberateness of a senior figure who had decided that a thing needed to be done and was doing it. He was alone — no companion, no institutional escort, the specific solitude of someone who had decided that what they were doing was personal rather than professional.
He stopped three meters away.
His expression was the one she had read from across the gallery during the presentation — not contempt, not resentment. The terrible recognition. Close up it was more specific: it was the expression of a man who was seventy years old and had spent forty years building an institution and had just watched someone younger do something he had been working toward for the same period and had not achieved.
"Mr. Vance," he said.
"Professor," Raymond said.
The gallery moved around them. The Crystal Palace's late afternoon light was doing its amber thing. Somewhere in the middle distance, Adeline was aware of Leonard watching.
"Impressive work," Voss said. The two words contained everything that was wrong between them and everything that was, despite that, true. "As always."
Raymond looked at him. Adeline watched Raymond look at him — watched the processing happen, watched the four years and the empty laboratory and the two years testing alone and the glass cabinet and the letters to the Academy, all of it present in the moment of looking at the man who had caused it.
"Thank you for coming, Professor," Raymond said.
Nothing else.
Voss stood for a moment — stood in the silence that Raymond had left him with, the silence that was not hostile and was not forgiving and was simply the complete absence of the engagement that Voss had come to provoke. Then he turned and walked back across the gallery toward the Crystal Palace's main hall.
Adeline watched him go.
"That's all you wanted to say," she said.
Raymond was looking at the far end of the gallery, not at Voss's departing figure. "He came here today expecting one of two things. Either I would ignore him, which he could interpret as fear. Or I would confront him, which would give him relevance." A pause. "I gave him neither."
"That required considerable restraint."
"The letter was the restraint. The letter said everything that needed to be said, in the medium and at the time of my choosing, without an audience." He looked at her. "What I said to him just now was courtesy. It's all he's owed."
She looked at the gallery where Voss had been standing. Then she looked at Raymond.
"The letter," she said. "Did you send it?"
"Yesterday evening. It was delivered this morning." He paused. "He came here anyway."
"Of course he did. He wanted to see your face."
"I know. That's why I gave him nothing to read."
She thought about this — about four years of someone holding power over your professional existence and one day deciding that the power was no longer available to be held, not because the wound had been resolved but because you had chosen to stop organizing yourself around the wound. The letter. The choice to speak once, fully, and then close the door.
"Adeline."
She looked up. Raymond was looking at her with the complete expression, and something in his voice had the quality it had at three in the morning in the laboratory, the quality of something said without the filter of professional context.
"The Grand Prix shortlist is posted in an hour," he said. "And after that, whatever happens next, I want you to know —" He stopped. Found the words in the direct way he found the words for important things. "The last three months. The work. What we built. Regardless of what the jury decides — I want you to know it's the best work I've ever done. And that's not only about the machine."
She looked at him in the Crystal Palace's golden-hour light, in the gallery that smelled of their compound and Viviane's defeated counter-compound and the lingering warmth of sixty-three people who had been reached by something real, and said: "I know. The same is true for me."
An hour later, the Grand Prix shortlist was posted on the board at the Crystal Palace's main entrance.
Three entries. One of them was the machine.
Florence read the list. The Crystal Palace read the list. The international jury members nodded in the way of people confirming something they had already decided. Viviane, who was standing near the board when the list was posted, read it with an expression that was not readable from where Adeline stood.
And Leonard, at the far edge of the entrance hall, folded a piece of paper — the piece of paper he had apparently been holding for the past hour — and put it in his coat pocket and walked out of the Crystal Palace into the Florence evening.
She watched him go and thought about what the folded paper might have contained, and decided she would find out when she found out, and turned back to Raymond, who was looking at the shortlist with an expression she had not seen before: the expression of someone for whom something they had stopped expecting had arrived anyway.
