The laboratory at ten o'clock on the evening of the first day of the Exposition was the quietest it had been in months.
Not the quietest in terms of sound — the city outside was making its ordinary evening sounds, and the building was making its building sounds, and neither of them was particularly quiet. Quiet in terms of pressure: the specific absence of the sustained low-grade urgency that had been the atmosphere of the laboratory since approximately the third week of the project, when the timeline had first become clearly demanding, and that had been present every day since then in some form, including the days when the work was going well, because the work going well still had the deadline behind it and the deadline had always been generating pressure.
The machine was at the Crystal Palace. The deadline had been met. The presentation had been given. The shortlist had been posted.
The laboratory had nothing in it that needed doing.
She sat at her bench and looked at the place where the machine had stood and thought about what it felt like when the primary object of a space was removed. Not bad — the space did not feel diminished. It felt open. It felt like a space that had finished one chapter and had not yet decided what the next one contained.
Raymond had found the wine again.
The same wine — or the same kind, she could not tell, the bottles looked identical — and the same two distillation-vessel-shaped glasses, and the same absence of ceremony, the wine appearing on the bench the way tea had appeared at the bench, the way coffee had appeared in the mornings, the way all the small domestic gestures of their months together had appeared: without announcement, as though they were simply the obvious response to the obvious situation.
She picked up the glass.
The wine was the same. She noticed the specificity of her recognition — that she knew this wine now, that it had become familiar in the specific way that things became familiar when you had encountered them enough times in contexts that mattered. She catalogued this as one of many small familiarities she had accumulated over the past months without noticing the accumulation, the way sediment accumulated, layers deposited by time and repetition until you looked at the record and saw that it was thick.
"The German judge," she said. "His notes."
"Thorough," Raymond said. He was leaning back against his bench — the first genuinely relaxed posture she had seen him in for three days, the posture of a person who had been maintaining tension and had finally been given permission to release it. "He asked me afterward about the volatility curve in compound three. He had the correct technical understanding but the wrong mathematical model for the curve. I gave him the derivation."
"You gave a jury member the derivation of your compound."
"He was going to construct the wrong model independently if I didn't. The wrong model would lead to incorrect conclusions about the compound's performance range. I preferred him to have accurate information."
"You preferred a jury member to have accurate information about your work in the period before he votes on it."
"Yes," he said, entirely without irony. "I prefer accurate information in general."
She looked at him. He looked back. The corner of his mouth moved.
"The counter-compound," she said. She had been holding this since the presentation. "You brought it. You had prepared it for that specific situation."
He was quiet for a moment.
"I identified the deployment pattern Viviane had used at the dạ hội and at the tea before that," he said. "The Crystal Palace's internal circulation would have been optimal for the kind of deployment she had used before, scaled up. I prepared a counter-compound for the most likely formulation based on her pattern." A pause. "I should have told you I was bringing it."
"Yes," she said. "You should have."
"I didn't want you thinking about it before the presentation."
"I know." She looked at him. "That's the same thing my father told you not to let me do. Handle something for me without telling me because you're managing what I'm thinking about."
He was still.
"I know," he said. "You're right."
"Tell me next time. Not the morning of — but tell me."
"Yes."
She drank her wine. He drank his wine. The laboratory was quiet in its open way, the way of a space that had accomplished something and was resting.
"The shortlist," he said, after a while.
"Yes."
"I stopped expecting it. Three years ago, when the Academy — I stopped expecting institutional recognition. Not as a performance of not expecting, as an actual recalibration. I stopped organizing my work around the question of whether it would be recognized and started organizing it around whether it was worth doing." He looked at the space where the machine had been. "I had forgotten what it felt like to have expected nothing and be given something anyway."
She thought about this. About what it meant to be the person beside someone when that happened — to be in the room when the thing they had stopped expecting arrived.
"How does it feel?" she asked.
He considered the question with the seriousness it deserved, the way he considered things that had no technical answer. "Strange," he said. "Good. Disorienting. Like information I don't yet have the right model for."
"You'll develop the model."
"I'll need data."
"You'll accumulate data."
"I'll need time to accumulate it."
"You have time," she said. And meant more than the Grand Prix voting. Meant after the Grand Prix voting. Meant the next project and the project after that and the mornings with coffee and the evenings with wine and the way the bench felt when both of them were at it, which was different from how the bench felt when only one of them was.
He looked at her.
"Yes," he said. "I have time."
They stayed in the laboratory until well past midnight — not working, not because there was work to do, but because the laboratory was where they were and there was no reason to leave. They talked about things they had not talked about before, now that the project's urgency had released them into the space of things that were not urgent but were worth discussing: what she had studied before she had stopped being permitted to study formally, what he had done in the years between leaving the Academy and finding the laboratory. Small reconstructions of lives lived before the other person was present, given as gifts, received as information that would matter going forward.
At some point she stopped sitting at her bench and was sitting on it — an undignified position for a laboratory bench, she acknowledged, and also the correct position for the way the conversation had gone — and he had moved from his bench to the stool nearest to hers, and the geography of the room had organized itself the way it tended to organize itself when neither of them was paying deliberate attention to it.
She fell asleep sitting on the bench at some point between one and two in the morning. She was aware of this happening — the awareness of falling asleep, which was a specific quality of consciousness available only in the moments before consciousness surrendered to sleep — and in the last moment of that awareness she felt him put his coat around her shoulders and thought: he will remember I need it before I wake.
In the morning, the light was the morning light, and she was on the bench with his coat, and he was at the secondary bench making coffee, and the laboratory smelled of the day's beginning, and on the corner of the bench — in the place where blank paper had been, weeks ago, in a different kind of night — there was a page with writing on it.
Not technical notes. A list of things. She read it without picking it up.
It was a list of the projects that had been building in his mind while they were building the machine. Seven projects, each described in a sentence, each requiring something that the machine had proved was possible. The last item on the list was not a project.
It read: *Show her the compound I haven't named yet.*
She picked up the coffee he had set on the bench beside her, which was ready at exactly the temperature she preferred, which he knew without being told, and she looked at the list, and she did not say anything about it.
But she did not set it down.
