The committee room was on the second floor of the Crystal Palace's administrative section — a part of the building she had not seen before, built for function rather than display, with the plain furnishings of institutional deliberation. A long table, six chairs on each side, a window that looked out onto the building's interior rather than the city, so that the light was filtered through glass twice over and had a quality she associated with rooms where things were decided without natural reference points.
Three committee members were already seated when they arrived: Chairman Benedetti, who was sixty and had the posture of a man who had spent decades in rooms where he was expected to appear impartial; Dr. Ferrara, who had been a genuine presence throughout the Exposition and whose expression this morning was carefully neutral in the way of someone managing their own prior formed opinions; and a third member she did not know, a younger man named Rossi, who looked like someone who had been told what to think about this meeting and was working to hold that instruction while also forming his own view.
She noted Rossi. Rossi was the potentially readable member of the three.
They sat. Benedetti thanked them for attending. He described the session as informal — the word *informal* appearing three times in his opening remarks, which meant the session's consequences could be significant while its procedures remained unchallengeable. She had been in enough institutional spaces to know what threefold informal meant.
Benedetti produced a document. A single page, dense with text, in a typeface she recognized as the Academy's administrative font. He placed it on the table and said that the committee had received this document the previous evening, through channels he described as *anonymous but corroborated,* and that the document raised questions the committee was obliged to consider before the Grand Prix final vote.
Raymond looked at the document. She looked at it beside him.
The document described, in the specific language of someone who understood both the technical vocabulary and the rhetorical potential of that vocabulary, a compound formulation that had been administered to a human subject over a period of several months without formal consent protocols, without institutional oversight, and with effects on the subject's emotional state that the document characterized as *consistent with psychological dependency formation through olfactory manipulation.*
Below the description: a set of laboratory records. Tables of data. Dates and compound compositions and subject responses. The records were real — she recognized the format immediately, the specific layout of Raymond's testing documentation.
She recognized the period they came from.
Benedetti asked Raymond to explain the records.
Raymond looked at the document for three seconds. She counted them. Then he began to speak in the precise voice he used for technical explanation — the voice that contained everything he knew and delivered it in the order required for the listener to build the correct model rather than the order in which he had acquired the knowledge.
The records, he explained, were from a period of compound behavioral testing conducted over approximately twenty-six months, during which time an Academy-affiliated complaint process had prohibited him from using any test subjects other than himself. The records showed the results of self-administered compound testing conducted under the most rigorous safety protocols he could implement without external support, documented with the same thoroughness he brought to all research, and submitted to the Academy's review committee as required by the restriction's terms.
He explained this clearly and completely.
Benedetti listened and made notes. Ferrara listened and made no notes, which meant she was processing rather than recording, which meant she already had context that shaped what she was hearing. Rossi listened and looked between the document and Raymond with the expression of someone recalibrating.
Then Benedetti said: "The document also contains reference to a compound formulation created for a specific individual. A woman connected to the current project. Can you speak to that?"
Raymond paused. Not a long pause — less than two seconds — but she felt it, the weight of what he was deciding in that pause: whether to answer fully and expose the counterformula's details, whether to answer minimally and create the impression of withholding, whether to answer in a way that protected her or in a way that protected the truth.
She put her hand on the table.
Not his hand — the table. An inch from his hand, visible to all three committee members, a visible gesture in a room that was reading gestures. She said: "May I speak to that?"
Benedetti looked at her. Nodded.
She looked at Rossi first, because Rossi was the readable one. Then she looked at Benedetti. Then Ferrara.
"The compound Mr. Vance created for me," she said, "was developed to address a specific psychosomatic symptom — a phantom olfactory response that had been affecting my professional function for twelve years. He explained the mechanism to me before he created it. He explained that it would create an alternative neural pathway rather than eliminating the existing one, and that using it would require my active participation each time. He asked whether I was willing to proceed. I said yes." She paused. "I said yes on multiple occasions across multiple sessions. I was not a passive subject. I was a collaborating participant who understood what was being proposed and chose to engage with it."
Benedetti made a note.
"The question of whether my judgment was clear," she continued, "is one I have been asked before, in different forms, by several people with various interests in the answer. I want to address it directly." She looked at the table, the document with its clinical language, the three committee members who were the current audience for everything Viviane had constructed. "I am a precision mechanical engineer who has been navigating hostile institutional terrain since I was old enough to apply to an institution that would not admit me. I am not a person whose judgment is unclear about things she has decided carefully. The decision to work with Raymond Vance on this compound treatment was one I made carefully, over time, with full information. The decision to continue working with him on the machine was one I made carefully. The decision to be here this morning is one I made carefully." She paused. "The question of whether I am capable of clear judgment is a question that has been asked about every woman in this city who has made decisions that inconvenienced people with more institutional power than she had. I decline to answer it on those terms."
The room was quiet.
Rossi had stopped looking at the document.
Ferrara said, in the voice she used when she was saying something she had been thinking for longer than this conversation: "Mr. Vance, the records from the restricted period. Were these submitted to the Academy's review committee at the time?"
"Yes," Raymond said. "In full. As required by the restriction's terms."
"And the committee had access to them for the duration of the review period."
"Twenty-six months."
A pause. "Thank you," Ferrara said. The thank-you of someone who had confirmed something.
Benedetti closed the document. He said the committee would review the materials and would communicate any findings through official channels. He thanked them for their time. He said — and she noted the phrasing carefully, because chairmen chose their phrasings carefully — that the committee appreciated their *thorough and direct engagement with the questions raised.*
They left the committee room.
In the corridor outside, she stood for a moment with her hand on the wall, feeling the specific quality of her own breathing after sustained effort.
Raymond stood beside her.
"You gave me a second," he said.
"Before I spoke. Yes."
"I felt it."
She looked at him. He was looking at her with the expression that was the complete one — fully open, present, without the small careful distance that had been there since the newspaper article, without anything between the expression and what it was an expression of.
"How did you know all of that?" he asked. "What you said about the Academy restriction. I never told you the specific terms."
"You told me enough," she said. "The rest — I read the Academy's published complaints process. I read the review committee's public methodology documents. I found the timeline in the public record." She looked at him. "I pay attention to things that matter to me."
He looked at her for a long moment. Then: "The records. The ones in the document. Someone in my network provided them."
"I know," she said. "Leonard's investigation. He doesn't have a name yet."
"I have a name," he said. "Or I will by this evening."
She looked at him.
"A former assistant," he said. "Two years ago, before the project. Before you." His voice was even. "I'm working on that."
She nodded. Not pushing. Letting him carry what was his to carry, as he let her carry what was hers.
They went back to the gallery. The machine was in its exhibition position. The Crystal Palace's morning light was doing its morning thing. People were arriving for the third day.
She stood at the reception position and he stood at the compound station and the work continued, as it always continued, because the work was what there was and also because the work was, in this specific instance, still extraordinarily good.
