The name was Marco Santini.
Raymond had it by four o'clock on the afternoon of the third day — delivered through the network of contacts that existed in the margins of the formal professional world, the network of people who knew who had worked where and who had moved on and under what circumstances, the informal ledger that the formal institutions did not keep but that the people who operated within and alongside those institutions maintained with comprehensive accuracy.
Marco Santini. Former assistant, working with Raymond from the third month of the current laboratory's existence until approximately fourteen months before Adeline's arrival, when the working relationship had ended — she was not given the details of why, and did not ask, understanding that the details were not hers to know unless he chose to give them.
The records from the restricted period had been in the laboratory's physical archive. The archive that Marco Santini had access to for fourteen months. The archive that had not been secured against a person who had been trusted with access to it.
She was at the exhibition space when Raymond brought her the name, written on a small card in the precise script he used for information that required accuracy over speed. He set the card on the equipment table beside her without ceremony.
She read it. Looked at him.
"All right," she said.
"All right," he said, and the two words between them were not about Marco Santini.
The third day of the Exposition continued around them. The gallery moved through its afternoon rhythms — the post-lunch surge of visitors, the shift change of press coverage from morning reporters to afternoon reporters, the committee members moving through the space with the increased intentionality of people in the final stages of a decision. The machine received visitors. Raymond and Adeline answered questions. The work of public presentation continued.
At five-thirty, as the gallery began its closing sequence, Adeline became aware of Raymond standing near the compound station with the stillness she recognized as the processing stillness — not the controlled stillness, the genuine one, the stillness of someone who had received information and was doing something real with it.
She waited until the last visitor had moved toward the exit. Then she crossed to the compound station.
"Tell me," she said.
He looked at her. "The records were from the restricted period," he said. "Before you. Before everything in the current project." A pause. "Marco was present for some of the worst of that period. He saw things I didn't — I was in the middle of it, I had no perspective. He saw what it looked like from outside."
She waited.
"I've been thinking about why he would have taken them to Viviane," Raymond continued. "The obvious answer is money, and that's probably part of it. But the other answer —" He stopped. Found the words. "Marco left because we disagreed about the direction of the work. He thought I was taking risks with my own health that were not justified by the research outcomes at the time. He expressed this. I told him the risk assessment was mine to make." A pause. "He was probably right. I was probably wrong. And he left, and I think he carried with him the belief that I was someone who needed to be stopped."
She looked at him. "So when Viviane's network offered him a way to stop you —"
"He took it. With some version of genuine conviction that it was the right thing to do." He looked at the equipment table. "I'm not excusing it. But I understand it. Which is different."
She thought about Auguste. About the gap between understanding and excusing, which she had been learning to navigate.
"What will you do?" she asked.
"Nothing, immediately. The session is done. The records have been submitted to the committee. Whatever they decide with the records is determined now." He looked at her. "The question of what I do about Marco is a question for after the Exposition. Like the other questions."
She nodded.
The gallery was empty now, the Crystal Palace staff moving through the exhibition spaces with the efficient purposefulness of people closing a building that would open again tomorrow. She and Raymond began the closing routine — cases locked, documentation sealed, the machine covered for the night.
In the middle of the closing routine, Raymond said: "Everything Marco has was from before."
She looked up from the case she was locking.
"The records, the documentation of the restricted period, whatever else he may have given Viviane — all of it is from before the current project. Before February. Before you." He was looking at the covered machine. "Whatever Viviane has used, whatever the committee has in front of them — none of it is from what we built together. None of it shows what happened in this laboratory over these months. That's not in anyone's file."
She understood what he was saying. The records were real and the restricted period had been real and the damage that had been done by the records being shared had been real. But the thing that mattered most — the work they had done, the specific quality of the collaboration that had produced the machine, the months of mornings and evenings and three-in-the-mornings — that was not in any archive that anyone had accessed.
"No," she said. "It's not."
"I wanted to say that," he said. "I wanted to say: what we built is ours. Not in the legal sense — in the sense that it's not available to be taken the way the earlier work was taken. It's in the machine. It's in what you experienced in the calibration sessions. It's in —" He stopped. Looked at her. "It's here. This is where it is."
The gallery was empty and the Crystal Palace was settling into its evening and the machine was covered and everything that needed to be done had been done.
She crossed to where he was standing.
She stood in front of him — close, the proximity that was theirs now, the one that had been the distance of one centimeter on the morning the machine was completed and had been closing ever since. She looked at him and he looked at her and the gallery was very quiet.
"Seven o'clock tomorrow," she said. "Before the gallery opens. We have a conversation to finish."
"Yes," he said.
"And Raymond." She held his eyes. "Whatever the committee finds. Whatever happens with the vote. I want you to know that I know what you built before I arrived. What it cost. What it was worth. And I know what we built together. And those are both true and neither one is worth more than the other." A pause. "I need you to know I see both."
He was still for a long moment. The kind of still that was not suppression — the still of someone receiving something completely.
"I see both too," he said.
She picked up her coat. He picked up his. They left the Crystal Palace together in the early evening, walking through the city that had been watching them for months and that would watch them for months more, and the watching was not the point and had never been the point, and both of them knew it.
