He told her about Viviane the way he told her most things: sitting across the workbench from her with the apparatus between them as a fixed point, speaking with the economy of someone who had edited the account many times and kept only what was structurally necessary.
The facts were these: Viviane de Valois had inherited control of the Florentine Perfumers' Guild from a father who had built it into a political instrument rather than a professional organization. The Guild's power derived not from the quality of its members' work but from its exclusive control over the import licenses for raw materials — a regulatory capture achieved through three decades of strategic marriage alliances and the patient cultivation of city council members. Raymond had, at the start of his professional life, applied for Guild membership and been refused on grounds that he understood immediately as pretextual. He had proceeded without Guild affiliation. Viviane had noticed.
The Guild's objection to his work was not primarily about the work. The Guild's objection was that his work was good, and that he was doing it outside their jurisdiction, and that if others began to see that the jurisdiction could be circumvented, the architecture of their power would require rebuilding.
"She can't destroy you legally," Adeline said, when he had finished. "The complaints against your laboratory were unsuccessful."
"Legal destruction isn't her preferred method."
"What is?"
"Social architecture." He turned a small glass flask in his hands, examining it without seeing it. "She constructs situations in which continuing to work with someone becomes more costly than not working with them. She doesn't need to ruin people. She needs to make it inconvenient to associate with them."
Adeline thought about the card, the tea, the careful deployment of Auguste's name. "She used information about me today. Personal information."
"She collects it. It's what the compounds are for, partly — emotional amplifiers in social contexts give you data. People reveal what they're protecting when they're protecting it." He set the flask down. "What did she use?"
Adeline was quiet for a moment. Then, because he was asking for tactical information rather than personal disclosure and she could process it as such: "Someone who was injured in an accident when I was a child. She referenced him in passing, which was not passing."
He nodded once, which was not sympathy and not its absence, which was, she found, easier to tolerate than either.
"Then she has a file on you," he said. "She'll have had one before you walked into my door. The question is how much is in it."
"And how do we find out?"
"We proceed as if it's comprehensive and plan accordingly." He pulled the project schematic toward him. "The more urgent problem is the timeline. If Leonard is already in contact with you, they're moving faster than I expected, which means they know the Exposition is achievable. They wouldn't be interfering with a project they thought would fail."
This had occurred to her too. It was a strange comfort, she thought — the fact that her enemies' urgency was evidence of her proximity to success.
"The machine," he said, and his voice shifted register slightly, the way it did when he moved from tactical to technical. "The test results were clean but they were incomplete. The calibration baseline is still missing."
She knew what was coming. She had known it was coming since the morning of the test, when she had understood the full architecture of what they were building and what it required. She had been turning it over since then the way she turned mechanical problems over, looking for the approach that minimized the necessary exposure.
There was no such approach. The problem was the problem.
"The emotional calibration," she said.
"The machine can reproduce scent. It can't reproduce the emotional information encoded in scent without a calibrated receptor. And a calibrated receptor means someone whose olfactory system is functioning at full capacity and who has been trained to the specific emotional frequency range we need." He looked at her steadily. "Which means it has to be you. And which means your phantom scent has to be addressed before we can calibrate."
"I know what it means."
"I'm not telling you what it means as information. I'm telling you what it means as a question."
She looked at the schematic. The junction point he had indicated in their first planning session, the place where her mechanical architecture interfaced with his chemical architecture — she had understood from the beginning that it was a more intimate interface than the drawing showed. She had understood and she had proceeded anyway, because the project was more important than the discomfort, and because the alternative was abandoning the only work that had ever felt worth doing.
She placed her hand flat on the surface of the workbench.
It was not a dramatic gesture. It was a small one, almost invisible — a hand set down on a surface, fingers slightly spread, the kind of gesture a person made when they were occupying a space deliberately rather than accidentally. But he looked at it, and then he looked at her, and she could see in the quality of his attention that he had understood.
"I'll need to map the phantom scent first," he said, and his voice had changed in a way she could not entirely categorize, had become slightly less precise, slightly more careful, as though he was handling something he was not certain of the weight of. "I need you to describe it to me. Not the incident — the scent itself. What it smells like when it arrives. What triggers it, and what the trigger pattern is."
"It smells like burning wood," she said, and was surprised by how easily it came. "And something underneath — something that isn't quite the fire. Something that was there before the fire started. I've never been able to identify it."
"Because you've been trying to identify it as a chemical compound," he said, already writing. "Try to identify it as a memory. What else was happening when the smell was first established?"
She thought about this for longer than she usually let herself think about it. She thought about the workshop at night and the particular smell of the machines and the cold metal and the way the oil lamps cast light at low angles that made everything look like it was being seen through amber glass.
"Sawdust," she said slowly. "There was sawdust. Auguste was repairing a wooden casing for one of the housings. The smell underneath the burning — it's sawdust."
Raymond wrote without looking up. "That's the anchor. The burning is the trauma layer. The sawdust is what was there before it. That's what we build the counterformula from — the sensory context before the wound, not the wound itself."
Adeline watched his pen move across the page and felt something shift in her chest — not dramatically, not in any way she would have been able to point to if someone had asked her to locate it. The mùi khét appeared, faint and brief, and then it was gone again before she had fully registered its arrival.
"That's three seconds," he said, without looking up. "Again."
She had not realized she had been holding her breath. She let it out slowly, and sat with the sawdust smell and the amber light and the cold metal, and found that she could sit with them.
