He had rearranged the laboratory.
Adeline noticed this the moment she arrived — the workbenches pushed to the perimeter, the distillation apparatus covered with cloth, the center of the room cleared to hold a single chair and a low table with a row of small sealed vials. The oil lamps had been repositioned to produce a warmer, more diffuse light than the laboratory's usual working illumination. It looked less like a laboratory and more like a room that had decided to become something else for the occasion.
Raymond was at the far bench, his back to her, making notes in the small dense handwriting she had come to recognize as his working script. He did not turn around when she entered.
"Sit down," he said.
She sat in the single chair and looked at the vials on the table. There were twelve of them, each labeled in the same small script, the labels turned away from her so she could not read them. The table also held a glass of water and a small notebook with a pen clipped to the cover, which she understood was for her.
"The process," he said, still not turning around, "is as follows. I'll present compounds in sequence. For each one, you describe what it evokes — not what it chemically is, not where you've smelled it before in a technical context, but where it takes you. Physically and temporally. What you see, what you hear, what the temperature is. If the phantom scent arrives, note its intensity on a scale and continue if you can."
"And if I can't continue?"
"Then we pause." He turned around then, carrying two of the vials, and looked at her with the expression she had come to recognize as his neutral face — not cold, not warm, simply present. "The goal today is mapping, not resolution. I need data, not endurance."
She opened the notebook. Uncapped the pen. "Ready."
The first compound was simple: pine resin, clean and sharp, with the particular dryness of high-altitude forests. She knew this immediately and said so.
"Where does it take you?" he asked.
The phrase landed differently this time than it had in their earlier sessions. She had spent three days thinking about it — the specific instruction to treat scent not as chemistry but as navigation, the way a compass heading was not a description of terrain but a direction of travel.
"A workshop," she said. "Early morning, before the workers arrive. The floorboards are pine. They've been swept but not waxed yet."
He wrote something. "Temperature?"
"Cold. Early spring, maybe. The kind of cold that hasn't decided to leave yet."
"Good. Next."
The second was something mineral and wet — the smell of stone after rain, or stone near water. She found herself in a courtyard she hadn't thought about in years, a courtyard attached to a house where she had spent three weeks during one summer studying a water wheel mechanism, the particular smell of the old stones and the river nearby.
The third vial he uncapped at the table rather than handing to her, and the smell reached her across the space between them: metal, heat, and underneath it something organic, something that had been alive before it burned.
The phantom smoke arrived.
It was not unexpected. He had told her it would come with this compound — had told her without telling her, by the careful way he had uncapped it at a distance rather than handing it directly. She registered its arrival, noted the intensity in the notebook — stronger than usual, a seven, maybe — and held very still.
She had, she realized, stood up.
She was not certain when she had stood up. The chair was behind her. She was standing in the center of the cleared space with the notebook in her hand and the pen pressing into her palm and the smell of smoke that wasn't smoke filling the space behind her eyes where clean perception usually lived.
Raymond did not move toward her immediately. She was aware of him as a presence at the edge of the room, waiting — not the waiting of someone who had decided to intervene, but the waiting of someone who was reading the situation, who was letting the situation develop into whatever it was going to develop into before responding to it.
Then he crossed the room and stood in front of her, close enough that she could smell the compounds on him — cedar and something mineral, the working smell of his days — and he placed his hand on her wrist. Not gripping. Not restraining. The weight of it was barely perceptible, a contact that said *I am here* without saying *you must stay.*
She looked at his hand on her wrist.
The notebook said seven. She amended it to five.
"There was a man," she said, and her voice was not the voice she used for technical discussion, which she noticed with a kind of detached interest. "He worked for my father. His name was Auguste. He taught me everything I know about precision work — the patience of it, the way you have to stop fighting the material and start listening to it." She stopped. "There was a fire. I was ten. He went back in after me because I had left my tools. I had gone back for my tools and he went back after me."
Raymond's hand was still on her wrist. He had not moved, had not changed the nature of the contact, had not made any of the noises or gestures that people made when they were processing information they found difficult.
"He survived," she said. "He lost the use of both hands. He can't do precision work anymore. He manages, he works with apprentices, he consults." She paused. "The smoke arrives when someone helps me. When someone goes back into the fire, figuratively. I know that's what it is. I've known for years."
"Then you know what the counterformula needs to target," he said.
"Yes." She looked at his hand on her wrist again. "You can let go now."
He did, stepping back, moving to the table to make a note. She watched him write and found that the smoke had faded — not gradually, the way it usually faded, but in the way that a sound stopped when its source was removed. Present, then absent, with a clear demarcation.
"The anchor is the sawdust," he said, writing. "And the cold. And the sound of the workshop before anyone arrives. We build the counterformula from those — from the sensory context of the workshop before the fire, before Auguste, before the wound. We give your olfactory system an alternative pathway to the memory."
"And that will work?"
He looked up from the notes. "It will work in the sense that it will give you the option to choose the alternative pathway. Whether you take it is a different question."
She sat back down. The room had the particular quality it had after something had shifted — not dramatic, not visible, but present in the air. She picked up the water glass and drank from it and looked at the covered distillation apparatus and thought about the word *option* and what it implied about the preceding twelve years, in which she had not had one.
"Same time tomorrow," she said.
The corner of his mouth moved. It was the smallest possible movement, barely registering, the kind of thing she would not have noticed if she had not been watching him carefully enough to notice small things. She filed it in the same place she was filing everything about him: the place she had labeled *incomplete data, review later.*
"Same time tomorrow," he said.
