The auction house on the Via dei Tornabuoni specialized in scientific instruments, which meant it existed in the particular cultural space where utility aspired to beauty and sometimes achieved it. The display cases held chronometers and sextants and measuring devices of various kinds, and the walls were hung with technical drawings in gilded frames, and the atmosphere was of a place that had decided that precision was a form of art and was inviting you to agree.
Adeline had been coming here for six years. She knew the owner, a small dry man named Ferrante who had an almost superstitious reverence for anything made before 1820, and she knew the regular attendees, and she knew which display cases held items worth examining and which held items that had been arranged to look more significant than they were. She had found three of the most important components of her current machine here, at prices that reflected the auction house's assessment of their historical interest rather than their engineering relevance.
Today she was here for precision springs — a set of six that Ferrante had acquired from the estate of a Milanese clockmaker and that she had seen in the catalog and understood immediately as exactly what she needed for the adaptive governor mechanism. She had a figure in mind. She intended to stay below it.
She had not expected Leonard.
He was at the far end of the second display case when she arrived, examining something through the glass with the focused attention of a man who wanted to appear focused rather than a man who was actually focused. He was dressed with the careful precision of his class — dark wool, white linen, nothing that could be criticized and nothing that expressed anything in particular. He was, she had assessed from their brief previous encounter, a man who had trained himself to have no legible surface.
"Miss de Monet." He moved toward her with the ease of someone who had positioned himself to intercept her and wanted her to understand that the interception was deliberate without wanting her to feel managed. "What a pleasant coincidence."
"Viscount Leonard," she said. She did not offer her hand. He had not expected her to.
"I heard there were some interesting springs in today's auction," he said, falling into step beside her with the practiced smoothness of a man who had been doing this in social contexts since childhood. "Milanese work, I believe. Exceptional quality."
"Yes," she said.
"I imagine they'd be useful for any number of precision applications." He paused, as though the thought was arriving naturally rather than having been prepared. "Including, I'd think, for certain adaptive control mechanisms. The kind that might feature in an apparatus designed to interface with volatile compound systems."
Adeline stopped walking.
She stopped, and she turned, and she looked at him with the full weight of the attention she usually distributed across multiple simultaneous problems, and she watched him not quite flinch under it.
"You're well-informed," she said.
"Florence is a small city for people who pay attention to the right things." He smiled, and it was a good smile — practiced and warm, genuinely pleasant to look at, the kind of smile that had opened a great many doors for its owner. "I hope you'll hear me out, Miss de Monet. I have a proposal that I think addresses your primary constraints — resources, time, and the rather significant obstacle of institutional opposition."
"You have two minutes," she said. "I want to look at the springs before the preview ends."
His proposal was clean, as she had expected. Full financial backing for the remaining fourteen weeks before the Exposition. Access to the Guild's import licenses for any materials she needed. Patent filing under the de Monet name, with full academic credit assigned to her as primary inventor. Distribution rights — here was the mechanism, here was the machinery underneath the offer — to be held jointly, with the military applications division of the northern trade consortium having right of first refusal.
"The military application," she said.
"The apparatus has obvious applications for intelligence work," he said, without changing his tone. "For reconstructing events. For investigation. It's not a weapon, Miss de Monet — I want to be clear about that. It's a tool for the recovery of information."
"In the hands of military intelligence."
"In the hands of people who can provide the institutional backing necessary to protect your work from the kind of interference you've already begun to experience." The smile had not changed but something behind it had. "The offer has an expiry date, as I mentioned when we spoke before. The Exposition registration deadline is in six weeks. After that point, the logistical window closes."
Adeline looked at him for a moment longer — not thinking, exactly, but feeling the shape of the situation, the architecture of pressure that he and Viviane had constructed around her. An offer from the Guild. An offer from the military. Both doors open, both offering protection, both extracting the same cost: the work in someone else's hands.
"I'll consider it," she said, with the same clean neutrality she had used with Viviane.
She bought the springs. She did not bid against Leonard on anything, because he did not bid on anything, because he had not come here for springs.
She walked the three blocks to Raymond's residence faster than she usually walked, which was fast. The springs were in her coat pocket, one internal pocket on the left, and she could feel their weight as she moved, six small precise objects that were exactly what she needed, and she had been thinking about them for six weeks and right now she was not thinking about them at all.
Raymond opened the door before she knocked.
She looked at him. He looked at her — the reading look, the one that moved across rather than at.
"Leonard," she said.
"Come in." He stepped back. "Tell me exactly what he said."
They sat at the workbench, her with the springs on the table between them as an anchor, him with a notebook he opened and then did not write in. She gave him the offer in precise detail — the terms, the timeline, the military application clause, the expiry date. He listened without interrupting, which was his particular quality in these moments: the capacity for complete reception without any of the small noises of acknowledgment that most people felt compelled to insert.
When she finished, he said: "Who else knows the full timeline?"
She listed them. Her personal assistant, who had access to her correspondence. The supplier in Genoa who was manufacturing three specialized components. Ferrante at the auction house, who knew she had been buying precision equipment at an unusual pace. Herself. Raymond.
She stopped at a name. Ran it back.
"The supplier in Genoa," she said. "He knew the Exposition date and the specification scope."
"He's also under a Guild import license for three of his primary raw materials," Raymond said.
She looked at him. "You knew."
"I suspected." He closed the notebook. "I'm sorry. I should have told you earlier."
The acknowledgment was so clean, so direct, so entirely unlike the way she had expected him to handle it, that she sat with it for a moment without responding.
"From tonight," he said, "the timeline stays between us. No suppliers, no intermediaries, no documentation that can be accessed." He opened the drawer under the workbench and took out a key — old brass, worn smooth on the bow, the kind of key that had been used enough to become comfortable. He set it on the table beside the springs.
She looked at it.
"The side entrance," he said. "On the left side of the building, off the service lane. It opens directly into the laboratory. For when you need to come without being observed from the street."
Adeline picked up the key. It was warm from the drawer, which meant it had been there long enough to reach room temperature, which meant he had not put it there in the last five minutes. She turned it over in her hand.
"What does this open?" she asked, although she had just told her what it opened, because she was not asking about the door.
"The side entrance," he said, and met her eyes, and there was something in his expression that she had not seen there before — not warmth, exactly, not softness, but a quality of attention that was different from the analytical focus she had come to know. Something that had the texture of a decision being made rather than a calculation being completed.
"All right," she said.
She put the key in her pocket. The left internal pocket, with the springs.
