She made the final notation at seven in the morning, in the precise block letters she reserved for entries that were closing something rather than opening it.
*Decision: executed. Implementation: see subsequent record.*
This was not, technically, a research notation — she had not completed a subsequent record yet, and the entry referred to nothing she had written. It was a notation for herself, in the specific form she used for things she needed to document before they became history rather than plan. She had written entries like this before: before field trips to archive sites that required overnight travel, before the submission of papers she was uncertain would be received well, at the beginning of each active decade when she wrote a brief account of where she was and what she intended to accomplish. She wrote one now because she understood, with the particular clarity of a person who has stopped arguing with herself and arrived at implementation, that what she was about to do was something she would not be able to document in the normal way afterward, and she wanted the record to exist.
She closed the notebook.
She went to the research cabinet and pulled the folder she had labeled in Year Four of Cycle Three, in handwriting that was, as forty years of correspondence had established, genuinely terrible: *Temporal Artifact Catalogue, Class IV-B. Forbidden Mechanisms: Soul-Division. For Academic Reference Only.*
She had written that last line as professional protocol. She had not anticipated, in Year Four of Cycle Three, that the academic reference would become operational.
The folder contained seven entries. She had been thorough — she was always thorough, which was both a professional virtue and, as the monitoring journals had established across five cycles, a way of approaching things she was not ready to approach directly by approaching everything adjacent to them with complete rigor. Five entries were marked destroyed or lost. One was in a private collection with unknown current holder. One was in the city temporal archive, catalogued under reference number TCA-4B-012, condition assessed as functional, accessible to credentialed researchers under standard loan procedure.
She had been a credentialed researcher for thirty years.
She assembled her materials with the efficiency of someone who had been mentally assembling them for three weeks: research bag, notebook, documentation forms, the small artifact transport case from the supply cabinet. The transport case was standard-issue for Class III-C and above materials. She had three of them from field work in Cycle Three. She selected the smallest, the one sized for objects under thirty centimeters, and placed it in the bag. She checked the bag once, and then checked it again, not because the second check would find anything the first had missed but because her hands needed the occupation.
She went to the front door.
She stopped with her hand on the latch and turned back once, as she always turned back once before important appointments. She had documented this pattern in the monitoring journal in Year Six of Cycle Two and had never determined whether it was preparation or hesitation or some compound of both that did not separate cleanly into its components. She looked at the study: the lamp at its angle, the forbidden artifact archive on the desk, the drawer on the left side with its two folded letters. The corner of the desk, where no tea had been placed this morning.
She had not made tea.
She left.
The city was in its mid-summer state, the particular quality of a place inhabited by one phase only — the half-occupied texture she had been navigating since childhood without ever entirely ceasing to notice. She took the transit line she had taken fourteen times across three active decades and sat with her bag on her lap and her hands on top of the bag and looked at the other passengers, which she rarely did in transit. People reading, people with closed eyes, a child examining the window with the sustained interest of someone for whom all windows were still informative. She looked at them with the specific quality of attention you gave to things you were aware you might be looking at for the last time, which was a quality of attention she did not usually permit herself because it was the quality of attention that produced grief before the fact, and grief before the fact was, in her clinical opinion, a less productive form of anticipatory response than planning.
She was not planning. She had finished planning. The planning was what the previous three weeks had been.
She watched the child watch the window.
The city temporal archive was a three-story building in the older district, constructed when archive buildings had been built to outlast their contents by centuries rather than decades. It had the particular quality of buildings with that intention: deliberate in its proportions, heavy in its materials, the specific weight of a structure that had been told to stay. She had always responded to it with the specific comfort of reliable sources: the recognition of something that would be what it said it was.
She went through the entrance procedures. The front desk archivist recognized her and waved her through with the efficient courtesy of someone who understood that researchers arrived with purposes and did not require extensive orientation. She signed the visitor log. She noted the date in the upper right corner, the cycle and year, the way she had been noting dates since Year One of Cycle Two.
She filled out the loan request form at the standing desk in the main reading room — standard form, the same form she had used twice before for Class IV-B materials — and wrote the reference number TCA-4B-012 and the loan justification in the institutional language she had learned to use for materials that required justification: *condition assessment, comparative research documentation.* She wrote her credentials number. She wrote the loan duration as three days and looked at this for a moment before signing the form, because three days was specific in a way the archivist might notice, though the archivist had no way to know what made three days specific, and the loan forms did not ask for reasons that were not institutional.
She brought the form to the restricted access desk.
F. was working through a stack of provenance documents with the focused patience of someone who had made peace with the interruption being part of the work. F. had managed the city temporal archive for the past decade and a half and she was approximately sixty years old and she had the specific quality of presence that people developed when they had spent their professional lives in the company of things that outlasted ordinary human attention spans: steady, unhurried, capable of treating extraordinary objects with ordinary care.
F. looked at the form. She looked at the reference number. She looked at Iris.
The pause lasted approximately three seconds.
Iris had prepared for several versions of the next thing F. might say. She had not prepared for F. to say nothing, to simply stamp the form with the official stamp and hold it out.
"Three days," F. said. "Condition assessment form at return."
"Of course," Iris said.
F. went to the restricted vault.
Iris stood at the desk and looked at the stamped form and thought about the three seconds. She thought: F. knew. Or F. suspected. Or F. had simply spent long enough in the company of Class IV-B materials to develop a sensitivity to the quality of attention people brought to requests for them. She thought about F.'s comment, two interactions ago, about the ethical questions raised by the existence of certain mechanism types. She thought about the fact that F. had stamped the form.
F. returned with the containment case — the same housing Iris had placed the artifact in at the end of Year Four of Cycle Three, the standard vessel for Class IV-B materials. She handed it across the desk with the handling instructions she had given twice before, which Iris had memorized on the first occasion and which they both understood were primarily formal at this point.
"Is there anything else you need?" F. said.
Iris thought about this for a moment. She thought: there are several things I need that are not available at this desk. She said: "No. Thank you."
She placed the case in the transport vessel, the vessel in the bag, and she left the archive.
The transit ride back held the specific quality of the ride out, reversed: the same passengers at different points in their journeys, the same window the same child was no longer looking at, the same quality of a city at mid-cycle going about its particular form of business. She sat with the bag on her lap and the artifact inside the bag and the Tide two days away and thought about Case Nine. She thought about Case Nine's two months. She thought about the specific thing she had written in the section of the notebook labeled *What I am going to do:* the slow version and the fast version end at the same place, and the fast version has a Case Nine in it.
She thought: Case Nine had a researcher whose counterpart had stopped responding. I have a researcher whose counterpart has not stopped. I have forty-one letters in an organized archive and a drawer that now holds a letter from each side. I have a modification to a corridor wall executed in the specifications from my own published work. I have a traveling case that was not finished.
She thought: the Case Nine data suggests two months. Two months of a different trajectory. I have never had two months of a different trajectory. I have forty years of the same trajectory and a progression rate that exceeds my case file maximum and three weeks of sitting with a decision I made at midnight.
The transit car stopped at her station.
She walked home in the afternoon light, through the half-occupied streets of the mid-cycle city, carrying the bag with the containment case inside it. The south corner tree was visible from two blocks away — she had a sightline on it from that angle that she had noted in Year Three of Cycle Four and never stopped noticing. She walked toward it and let herself look at it as she approached: the specific fullness of a tree that had had enough time, the quality of light through its leaves that she had described to him in Year Three of Cycle Three and that he had told her he was waiting to see.
He was going to see it in two days.
She was going to be there when he did.
She went inside. She set the bag on the study desk and removed the transport vessel and opened it and looked at the containment case and then opened the containment case and looked at the artifact. Twenty-three centimeters. Organic material composition, intact primary mechanism, secondary containment sound. She had written these things in Year Four of Cycle Three and they remained accurate. She had also written *functional* in the condition assessment and this too remained accurate, in the specific way that a thing was functional when it was capable of doing what it was designed to do.
She looked at it for a long time.
She thought about the nine case files. She thought about the seventeen centimeters on her wrist and the progression rate and the characteristic shape of all nine trajectories. She thought about what all nine had in common: in none of them had the subject been in the same room as the person they had been reaching toward, not with sufficient duration and the right conditions for the mechanism to be tested. She thought about his letter — *I have never demolished anything I built because I have never built anything I loved enough to be worth demolishing* — and she thought about the traveling case that had been half-packed and she thought about F.'s three-second pause and the stamp coming down anyway.
She opened the archive to the ritual section.
She read it one final time, not because she needed to — she had committed it to memory in the third reading — but because a final reading was the correct form for the final preparation. When she finished she closed the archive and placed it beside the containment case and looked at both objects on the desk and found that she had nothing further to think about them. The thinking was complete. The framework was complete. She had been waiting, without entirely knowing she was waiting, for the framework to be complete, and it was complete now, and there were two days before the Tide.
She pulled the research notebook toward her and wrote the handling notes for the artifact loan — reference number, condition on receipt, loan duration, the standard entries she had been trained to make across thirty years of archive work. She wrote them precisely, in the professional voice, the way she wrote everything that required precision and also everything she was not quite ready to write in any other voice.
Then she opened the notebook to the section labeled *What I am going to do* and read what she had written there at midnight three weeks ago. She read it to the end. She added nothing.
She closed the notebook.
She went to the kitchen and made tea and stood at the kitchen window in the corrected afternoon light and thought about two days. She thought about what the house would be like after the Tide turned. She thought about what she would be like after the Tide turned. She thought about the east room lamp at its specific angle and the shelf height calibrated to her reach and the corridor wall with its denser plaster formulation, all the accumulated evidence of forty years of attention that she was going to be standing inside of when he woke.
She thought: he built this house toward me. I am going to be here when the direction reverses.
The tea went cool in her hands.
Outside, in the garden, the south corner tree stood in the last of the afternoon, its leaves holding the specific light she had described to him and that he had been waiting to see.
Two days.
