On the third day she sat down to write the letter.
She had spent the intervening time in the manner of someone running a controlled experiment on themselves — which she was, technically. She had not opened the drawer. She had not reread any of the previous correspondence, had not stood at the east window longer than the functional minimum, had managed the proximity of the house with the specific sustained effort of a person who understood the mechanism of what they were managing and found that understanding to offer almost no relief whatsoever. The fracture on her left wrist had not visibly changed. She had not been able to determine whether this was evidence the protocol was working or simply evidence that forty-eight hours was not a meaningful interval in the context of a forty-year accumulation.
She had written in her research notebook, at the conclusion of the second day: *Baseline assessment inconclusive. Protocol requires extended implementation. Adjusting timeline.*
What this meant, in practical terms, was that the 48-hour trial had become the new shape of her life. And the new shape of her life required a letter unlike any she had written before.
She prepared the desk the way she always prepared it for correspondence: cleared the working surface, positioned the lamp, set out two pens in case one failed, arranged the paper at the angle she wrote from. Forty years of correspondence had given her a ritual for it that was now effectively involuntary, as automatic as the way she turned the lamp to a specific angle or held the pen at a particular height from the page. She had always thought of the ritual as practical — a way of creating the conditions for the best possible thinking. She thought of it now as something she could not seem to dispense with even when she wanted to, which was less flattering but perhaps more accurate.
She wrote the date, the cycle number, the year — the header she had used for forty years, precise and slightly absurd in the way of all her archival habits. Then she wrote: *Dear Helios,*
She had written that salutation one hundred and sixty-three times. She was apparently incapable of a different opening. She let it stand.
She began the letter.
*The thaw this cycle has been unremarkable in its general physiological character, though the cellular reactivation timelines appear to be running slightly ahead of previous cycles — I note this for my own records and do not read significance into it. The house is in good condition. The modification to the northern window affects the kitchen light in the afternoons in ways you may or may not have anticipated; I will reserve judgment until I have observed the full seasonal range. The tree at the south corner—*
She stopped. She read it back.
It was her voice. Not approximately her voice — precisely her voice, the specific syntax she used when she was writing her way toward something she had not yet decided to say directly, the construction she defaulted to when the actual subject was adjacent to the stated one. The semicolons. The way she hedged and then immediately undermined the hedge. She had written *I will reserve judgment* in a sentence about light coming through a window, which meant, in her actual voice, that she had already formed a view and found it affecting and was deciding whether to be honest about it.
He would hear every word of that.
She tore the page in half.
She started again.
*The house is in good condition. The modification to the northern window has changed the quality of light in the kitchen. I have noted several other adjustments that appear to have been made since the previous cycle; I will conduct a full inventory in the coming weeks. My work is proceeding as expected. The archival project I began in Year Seven of the previous cycle is at approximately its midpoint.*
She stopped. She read it back.
This version was wrong in a different direction. It was too spare, too stripped of the texture of her actual correspondence, which ran to digressions and parenthetical observations and questions that existed not because she did not know the answers but because she wanted his version of them. She had always written letters that expected a response — that built, in their architecture, a specific space for what he would say. This letter had no space in it. It was a report, not a correspondence. It sounded like something she would send to a professional contact she had never met.
He would notice.
In forty years he had developed — she understood this now with the particular clarity of three days without his letters — a reading of her equivalent to the reading she had developed of his architectural metaphors. He translated her. He had been doing it for so long that it had become fluent, and fluency meant precision, and precision meant he would hear the absence in this letter the way she had once been able to hear the gap between his stated subject and his actual one. He had written about buildings for forty years and meant other things, and she had learned to hear the other things, and he had learned to hear her, and she could not write him an empty letter without him knowing it was empty.
She tore this page in half too.
She sat for a moment with the two torn halves of two different drafts and thought about the problem in the way she thought about difficult research problems: by trying to identify which constraints were fixed and which were negotiable. The fixed constraint was that the letter needed to create distance. The negotiable constraint was how it created distance — whether through obvious coldness, which he would notice, or through something more subtle, which he might not notice immediately and which might give her enough of the forty-eight-hour intervals she needed to begin changing the cellular data.
What she needed to write, she understood, was a letter that was technically hers — that preserved enough of her voice to read as correspondence from the woman he knew — while removing the center of it. The warmth. The reaching. The specific quality of attention she brought to his world and to him specifically. She needed to write a letter in her own handwriting and her own syntax that had the shape of Iris and not the substance.
She began the third draft.
She wrote about the house in accurate detail — noting changes with the specificity of her actual observational habits, but without the layer of significance she normally attached to such observations. She wrote about her work with the professional register she used in correspondence with colleagues she respected but did not know well. She asked one question — because her letters always asked questions, and a letter with no questions would be conspicuous — but she chose it with care: a question about the building he had mentioned in his last letter, about whether the light problem had been resolved. A question about his work rather than about him. A question that could be answered in a sentence or two and that left no particular space for anything further.
She wrote, at the end: *The garden looks as it should. I hope you are well.*
She set the pen down and read it.
It was close. It was very carefully close. She could see the bones of her own syntax in it — the structure of her sentences, the characteristic way she ended a paragraph with an observation and let the observation do the work of the thing she had not said. But the quality was wrong in a way she thought, for a moment, he might not immediately identify. Not wrong like something broken. Wrong like something with the correct proportions and the incorrect weight — a building that looked right from the outside and felt wrong the moment you stepped through the door because the light was coming from the wrong angle, or the ceiling was a quarter-meter lower than the room's footprint suggested, or some fundamental thing about the relationship between the spaces had been designed without accounting for the person who would occupy them.
She thought: *He will feel this immediately.*
She thought: *Or he will not, and I will have two weeks before the next exchange, and I will use those two weeks to be different enough that by the time he reads it something in me will have changed.*
She folded the letter in thirds with the precision she brought to all physical tasks. She took an envelope from the lower drawer. She addressed it in her handwriting — which was, as he had observed on numerous occasions with a consistency she had always found disproportionate to the subject, genuinely terrible. She wondered if he could read the difference in her grip today. She wondered if forty years of her terrible handwriting had given him enough data to detect the specific quality of a pen held by a person who was not quite themselves. She thought probably not. She hoped not. She was not entirely sure which outcome she preferred.
She sealed the envelope before she could open it again.
The sound of the seal was very small.
She placed the letter on the corner of the desk where he would find it — the same corner where he always left her tea, where she had always placed his letters when she wanted him to see them immediately on waking. She placed it there without deciding to. The habit of forty years was faster than her intention, and by the time she recognized what she had done the letter was already on the corner and it was too late to move it to a different position without the relocation feeling like a further act of deliberateness, which she did not have the energy for.
She stood for a moment looking at the sealed envelope.
It was just paper. It had no knowledge of what was inside it. It held no record of the one hundred and sixty-three letters that had preceded it, no awareness that it was different in the way that mattered, no understanding of what had been removed from it in the three drafts that preceded the version it contained. It was a rectangle of paper with her terrible handwriting on the front and the back sealed, and it sat on the corner of the desk the same way all the others had sat, in the years when she had left them for him, when leaving them had been an act she performed without thinking about what it cost her to perform it.
She had always believed in the completeness of documentation. She had always believed that evidence, properly kept, told the truth about things.
She did not write an entry in her research notebook for this.
She went to the kitchen. She made tea. She stood at the kitchen window in the light that was wrong now because of the building he had not known would go up to the north, and she held the cup in both hands and did not drink it, and thought about the second case in her files — the researcher whose counterpart had stopped writing, whose cells had not understood this as a practical development. She thought: *I am not stopping.* She thought: *I am only changing the frequency of what I say.*
The distinction seemed important and also, she was aware, possibly irrelevant to the mechanism.
She thought about the letter on the corner of the desk, sitting there with its correct shape and its wrong weight, and she thought about what it would be like to receive it — to wake from ten years of suspension and find it in the place she always left things for him, to pick it up and recognize the handwriting and open it expecting the letter she had always written and find, instead, this. This careful reduction. This precise and deliberate diminishment, executed in her own hand.
She stood at the kitchen window for a long time.
The tea went cold.
Eventually she returned to her desk and sat down and opened her research notebook to the protocol page. She wrote, in the section labeled *Day 3:* Protocol maintained. Trigger materials not accessed. Correspondence executed per modified parameters.
She looked at what she had written.
Then she added, in the small script she used for observations she was not ready to give full notebook weight to: *The letter is on the corner of the desk. I cannot determine whether placing it there was a habit or a choice. I am uncertain whether the distinction matters.*
She sat in the quiet house with the sealed letter on the corner of the desk and the fracture on her left wrist and the nine case files in their drawer and all forty-one of his letters in their organized sleeves, and she was aware, with the specific clarity of three days without sleep and a kind of sustained internal effort she had no prior calibration for, that she had just done something she would not easily undo.
She was also aware — and this was perhaps the thing she would not write in the protocol notes, the observation she would file under *the way things are* and not examine closely — that the letter on the corner of the desk was still, despite everything, a letter. That she had written it. That some version of her was in it even now, present in its structure if not its warmth, reaching in its own reduced way toward the person who would read it.
She had told herself she was learning to stop reaching.
She looked at the letter on the corner of the desk.
She thought: *Not yet.*
