She needed the survey files from the storage room.
This was a practical necessity, not a choice — she was at a point in the archival project where the primary materials were essential and could not be substituted by memory or secondary sources. She had been aware of needing them for three days and had been, if she was honest with herself about it, mildly avoiding the storage room for reasons she had not examined closely. She examined them now, standing in the corridor outside the storage room door: the storage room was one of the spaces in the house most clearly organized by him, the reorganization from Cycle Four that had sorted her materials to the front and his materials behind in a system she had not designed but which served her perfectly, and it was therefore a room that was, like most rooms in this house, a form of his attention made architectural. She had noted this. She had spent several weeks noting things of this kind and then returning the objects to their original positions and leaving the rooms as she had found them and going back to her research notebook to enter, under the protocol header, that the house was presenting ongoing challenges to controlled methodology.
Today she had the survey files to retrieve and she was going to retrieve them.
She opened the storage room door.
The light was wrong.
Not dramatically wrong — not the wrongness of a room in darkness when you expected light, or a room destroyed when you expected order. It was the wrongness of a small and specific inaccuracy, the kind that registered in the peripheral visual field before it registered in the cognitive one: the angle of the light through the storage room's single small window was not the angle appropriate to mid-morning in late autumn. It was lower. More golden. The quality of early morning rather than mid-morning, or late afternoon rather than either — a light that belonged to a different hour than the one she was standing in.
Iris stood in the doorway and did not, for a moment, do anything.
Then she opened her notebook to a fresh page and wrote, in the heading position: *Observation log — temporal anomaly, possible. Storage room, first floor, northern wall. Date:* and wrote the date and cycle and year with the automatic precision of forty years of documentation. She wrote: *Anomalous light quality noted on door opening. Does not correspond to current hour or season. Temperature differential to be assessed. Proceed with observation prior to entry.*
She assessed the temperature differential without entering, standing at the threshold with one hand extended slightly into the doorframe. The air in the storage room was cooler than the corridor by a margin she estimated at three to four degrees — consistent with a space that had not been heated recently, or a space in a different season entirely. She wrote this down.
Through the doorway, the storage room looked, on surface examination, like the storage room: the shelves of materials along the right wall, her items at the front and accessible, the boxes of his architectural samples and reference materials arranged behind. She could see the front of the nearest shelf clearly. The survey files she needed were visible from where she stood.
She did not walk in to retrieve them.
She was aware of this as a choice, and aware that the choice required examination. She was a researcher. She had encountered anomalous phenomena across forty years of work and her consistent response to anomaly was systematic investigation. She had protocols for this. She had written some of the protocols. Standing in a doorway examining a room through its threshold instead of entering it to collect the survey files she specifically needed was not consistent with any of her established investigative procedures.
She wrote in the notebook: *Reason for non-entry: under assessment.*
Then she looked into the room more carefully.
The light in the room was wrong. She had established this. But as her eyes adjusted to the differential between the corridor's light and the room's light, she began to see what the wrong light was illuminating — not the storage room as she knew it, with its five cycles of accumulated materials and organized shelving, but something beneath it or behind it or adjacent to it that the current organization only partially concealed. The walls, in this light, looked different. The texture was rougher — not the finished plaster of the current room but something more raw, less settled. The ceiling height appeared marginally lower. And the wooden shelving units — she had always assumed they were his work, installed sometime in Cycle Two or Three, because they were built with his characteristic precision — looked, in this light, newer than they should.
New. As in: recently constructed.
As in: this might not be the storage room after forty years of occupation. This might be the storage room before it.
She wrote: *Hypothesis: anomalous door presenting temporal cross-section. Probable period: early occupation, Cycle 1 or early Cycle 2. Basis: light quality, temperature differential, estimated construction-state of fixed elements.*
She read this back.
She understood that if she was correct, she was standing at a threshold between her current present and a past she had lived through but had not been present for in a particular way — the past of the house before it was the house, before the modifications and the accumulations, before it had become the space that it had become. Before she had understood what it was.
Her left hand had found, at some point during the observation period, the corner of the doorframe. She was holding it with a grip that her research notebook, if it could have recorded such things, would have described as controlled but present. She was not panicking. She was not experiencing anything she would clinically classify as distress. She was standing at a threshold between then and now with her hand on the doorframe and her notebook in her other hand, and she was aware that the reason she had not entered was not methodological caution.
The reason she had not entered was that Cycle One was in that room.
Cycle One was the cycle in which she had woken in an empty house and found lines of coal on a wall and cried alone in a corridor because the wall was warm. It was the cycle in which she had begun to understand, in the slow accumulating way she understood things she was not ready to categorize, that the house she was living in was not simply a house. She had been eighteen and she had been alone and she had not had the forty years of subsequent context that would have given her a framework for what she was beginning to understand, and she did not need to enter this room to know that the person she was then was in there.
Iris stood at the threshold for a time she did not measure.
The light in the storage room was steady. The anomaly was not fluctuating or fading. It was simply present — the way the house was present, with the particular quality of something that had been there long enough to have settled.
She wrote: *Subject did not enter. Reason: under assessment.*
She looked at this for a moment. Then she crossed out *under assessment* and wrote below it: *Subject did not enter.* Full stop. She did not classify the reason, because the reason was not classifiable within any framework she currently trusted.
She stood a moment longer.
In her peripheral vision, through the doorway, the light was the gold of early morning in Cycle One. She could almost — not quite, but almost — remember the exact quality of it, the way it had come through the single window onto the rough-plastered walls. The way the house had smelled then: emptier, less layered. The way her footsteps had sounded in it before forty years of accumulated modification had changed the acoustic properties of the floors and walls.
She put her hand on the door.
She closed it, slowly, the way she would close a door on something she intended to come back to. Not dismissal. Deferral. The specific gentleness of someone who understands that what they are handling is not robust.
She stood in the corridor with the closed door in front of her and looked at her notebook. The last lines she had written:
*Subject did not enter.*
Below the storage room door, in the gap between door and threshold, the light was different from the corridor light. She could see it from where she stood: that particular gold, lower and older than the light she was standing in.
She looked at her left wrist.
The fracture was the same. She could not determine whether this was reassuring or whether it simply indicated that the anomaly was not the type of trigger she had been monitoring for, or whether both things were true simultaneously, or whether she had been standing at a threshold between then and now for long enough that the cellular response had simply not had time to register.
She turned and walked back to the study.
She sat down at her desk. She opened the research notebook to the next blank page and wrote a full anomaly documentation report: time of observation, conditions, measurements, hypothesis, reason for non-entry rendered as *methodological caution pending further assessment* because some forms of accuracy she was not yet equipped to write down.
At the bottom of the report she wrote, in the smaller script she used for the observations she wasn't ready to give full weight to: *The light in there is the light I remember from the first morning. I don't know what that means. I don't know if it means anything at all.*
She sat with that for a while.
Then she went back to the corridor and stood outside the storage room door again, and looked at the line of different light at the bottom of it, and thought about Cycle One and the corridor and the warm wall and the eighteen-year-old who had not had a framework for any of it yet, and felt, with the specific and irrational conviction of someone who had spent forty years trying to be rigorous about exactly this kind of thing, that the door was waiting for her.
She did not open it.
But she stayed there for a long time.
