She went back with her notebook.
This was, she told herself, an investigative decision. She had documented the anomaly. She had established the hypothesis. The logical next step in any responsible investigation of a temporal anomaly was controlled re-observation under conditions of prepared attention, which she now had. She had her notebook, she had her documentation from the previous observation, she had a framework — preliminary, incomplete, but a framework. She was a researcher. She had observed anomalous phenomena before. She knew how to approach a door.
She was also aware that she had been thinking about the door for three days without doing anything except thinking about it, and that her reasons for returning to it now had less to do with methodological readiness than with the fact that the thinking had become denser and more present and she was finding it increasingly difficult to conduct the other parts of her day with the door occupying as much cognitive space as it was occupying.
The corridor was quiet. The storage room door was closed, as she had left it. The line of different light at the threshold was still there — visible, steady, that particular gold that did not belong to this hour.
She opened her notebook to the observation log.
She opened the door.
The storage room appeared as it had three days ago: the anomalous light, the cooler temperature, the slightly different quality of the surfaces that suggested a different moment in the house's history. She stood in the doorway and looked at it with the sustained focused attention she brought to things that required her full capability, and she identified, in the first seconds of observation, what she had not identified three days ago because she had been managing the shock of the anomaly itself.
On the far side of the storage room, through the differential space of the anomaly, a corridor was visible.
Not the corridor she was standing in. A different one — the same corridor, but earlier, unfurnished, bare-walled, with the rough plaster of a room that had not yet been finished. And in the corridor, moving at the specific pace of a person with a destination, was a girl with dark hair cut short and a small notebook in her hand.
Iris looked at the girl.
She recognized the notebook first. She had kept that notebook — had, in fact, kept it past its useful life and into a subsequent phase of sentimental preservation before losing it somewhere in the third cycle's storage reorganization. She had been looking for a way to describe its cover and had never found adequate vocabulary: a brownish color, not quite red, with a particular abraded quality on the lower right corner from being put into and taken out of jacket pockets. She could see the abraded corner from here.
The girl turned, briefly, to look at a section of wall.
Her profile was the profile of photographs Iris had seen of herself at eighteen, in the single collected set of pre-suspension images she had retained: the precise set of her jaw, the way she held her head when she was actively observing something, the particular posture of paying very close attention. She was walking through the corridor the way Iris walked when she was mapping a space for the first time — systematic, comprehensive, not hurrying but not pausing.
Iris stood in the doorway between her present and her past and watched herself be eighteen.
Her pen was in her hand. She did not remember picking it up. She began writing without making the decision to write, because her hands had learned, across forty years of documentation, to proceed without instruction when observation was required.
*Subject — self, approximately 18 years, Cycle 1 Day 1. Moving through corridor, west section, pre-modification layout. Appears in post-thaw reorientation phase, functional. Has notebook. Heading toward kitchen.*
The eighteen-year-old walked through the corridor. Iris watched her walk through the kitchen doorway and disappear. Then there was a pause — several minutes in which the anomaly simply held its state, the light steady, the temperature differential maintained — and then the girl reappeared in the corridor from the kitchen direction, this time moving differently: slower, focused on the wall rather than on a destination.
She had found the diagram.
Iris knew this from the way she moved — the specific quality of her own slowing-down when she had found something worth stopping for, the slight shift in posture when attention was being given fully rather than partially. She watched herself crouch down in front of the section of wall where the drawing was, and she watched the eighteen-year-old's hand come up to hover beside the drawing without touching it, the gesture of someone considering an artifact.
She was looking at the diagram.
Iris, watching from forty years' distance, knew what the eighteen-year-old was about to understand: that the diagram was functional, that it pointed to the cold storage, that someone had put it there for her. She knew the sequence of the understanding because she had lived through it. What she had not understood at the time, and what she was understanding now from the position of watching herself understand the surface of it while missing the depth, was that the eighteen-year-old was looking at an object and seeing *function* when the thing she was looking at was not primarily a function.
The diagram on the wall was not primarily a solution to the problem of hunger.
It was evidence of a type of attention she had not yet learned to recognize. Someone had thought about her: had thought about what she would need in the specific conditions of her arrival, had thought about how she would move through the space and what she would find and what she would miss and what would help. Had thought all of this about a person they had never met, on the basis of nothing except the understanding that a person would be here and that a person would have needs. Had then taken that thinking and made it material — had drawn it on a wall in a place it could be found by a person moving through the house with open attention.
That was not solving a logistical problem. That was something closer to care.
The eighteen-year-old was discovering the logistics. Iris was standing in a doorway forty years later discovering what the logistics meant, and the gap between those two things was the exact size and shape of everything she had learned in the intervening time about the difference between what something appeared to be and what it was.
She watched herself stand up and go toward the cold storage.
She watched the corridor hold its empty state while the eighteen-year-old was in the storage room — the bare walls, the wood floor, the diagram visible from here as a series of careful lines. She watched herself come back from the storage room with a container in hand, crouch down again in front of the diagram, and put her hand against the wall.
Iris knew what her eighteen-year-old self was feeling. She knew it with the specific knowledge of lived experience — had carried that moment across forty years as one of those moments that did not become less vivid with time but became more complex, adding new layers of meaning with each cycle as her understanding of what had been happening in it deepened.
The wall was warm. He had been there minutes before. She had been alone in the house and there had been evidence of someone else's presence in the temperature of a wall, and she had sat on the floor and cried because she did not have a framework for what it meant to be thought about by someone you had never met.
She still did not entirely have a framework for it.
The anomaly shimmered. It had been stable for most of the observation period, but now it was beginning to fluctuate — small changes in the light quality, a slight instability in the temperature differential. She recognized this, from the theoretical literature on temporal anomalies, as the early stage of a destabilization event: the cross-section was becoming less stable, would close within minutes.
She could close the door and step back into the corridor. The responsible choice. The methodologically sound choice. The anomaly was not fully mapped, had not been formally assessed for physical entry safety, had not been — she was already stepping through the door.
Not a decision. A motion. Her feet carrying her forward into the anomalous space before her mind had finalized the reasoning, the way she moved toward things she needed to see more closely.
The storage room was different from inside: the anomaly stronger here, the light fully that of the past now rather than a filtered version of it viewed through a threshold. She was in the cross-section rather than looking into it. The floor was solid under her feet. The air was cooler. She could hear — faintly, from somewhere in the corridor visible through the anomaly — the sound of movement.
She walked to the boundary between the storage room and the corridor of the past and stood at it without crossing.
The eighteen-year-old was sitting on the floor with her back against the wall and her container of food from the cold storage and her small abraded notebook, and she was crying in the specific quiet way that Iris remembered from the inside — not dramatically, not visibly unless you were close, just tears running down her face while she sat with her back against the warm wall and her eyes on the diagram and the container in her hands, eating methodically because she was hungry even though she was also crying.
Iris stood two meters away, separated by the boundary of the cross-section, unable to be seen or heard or felt in any way that would register to the person on the other side.
She looked at the eighteen-year-old looking at the diagram.
She looked at what the eighteen-year-old was not seeing: not just a diagram on a wall but an act of attention, the first in a series of acts of attention that would extend across forty years and fill a house with their accumulated weight. Not a solution to the problem of hunger. The beginning of something she had not recognized as beginning.
The anomaly shuddered. She had seconds.
She looked at the diagram — at the precise lines of it, the careful annotation, the fact that someone had crouched on this floor and drawn this with coal because a person would need it. She looked at the eighteen-year-old with her back against the warm wall. She looked at the wall itself.
The anomaly closed.
She was standing in the current storage room — her storage room, with its forty years of organized materials and his shelving at the back. The light was the normal light of this hour. The temperature was room temperature. The floor was the floor she had always stood on.
Her notebook was in her hand. She looked at what she had written during the observation:
*Subject — self, approximately 18 years, Cycle 1 Day 1. Moving through corridor, west section, pre-modification layout. Appears in post-thaw reorientation phase, functional. Has notebook. Heading toward kitchen.*
And beneath it, in smaller script, in the handwriting that happened when her hand was moving faster than her conscious intention:
*She was looking at function. She didn't see what it was.*
And beneath that, smaller still: *Neither did I. Not for a long time. Maybe not yet.*
She closed the notebook.
She stood in the storage room in the ordinary light of the ordinary morning and thought about the eighteen-year-old sitting on a floor forty years ago with her back against a wall that was warm because someone had been there, and thought about the fact that the warmth had not been, in any medical or physical sense, a significant finding — it was simply the residual thermal signature of a body that had been standing there recently — and thought about how the eighteen-year-old had cried over it anyway, and how she, standing here now with forty years of context, understood something the eighteen-year-old had not understood, which was that the warmth in the wall was not a fact about temperature.
It was a fact about presence. About the quality of an attention that had been paid, and had left its mark on things, and could still be felt.
