Chapter 11: The Cold Storage Vault
The maintenance shaft Morgana had identified ran along the eastern wall of the cold-storage facility exactly as she'd predicted, half-buried under decades of dust and forgotten in every official schematic Aiden had ever seen. They slipped inside just past midnight, moving in practiced silence, her leading the way through the narrow passage while he followed close behind, memorizing every turn for the return trip.
The air inside smelled of rust and stale magic, the kind of scent that clung to places long forgotten by everyone except those desperate enough to need them. Morgana moved with the confidence of someone who had crawled through dozens of similar spaces before, while Aiden, despite his training, found himself relying entirely on her instincts in a way that would have been unthinkable only a week earlier.
The first security checkpoint fell easily — Aiden's knowledge of the guard rotation combined with Morgana's quick hands on the lock mechanism, the two of them moving with a rhythm neither had expected to develop so quickly. Inside, rows of frozen data crystals lined the vault walls, each one humming faintly with preserved magical records.
"There." Morgana whispered, pointing to a cluster of crystals marked with unusual encryption. Aiden scanned them with the Assessor's Lens, and his breath caught at what appeared — dozens of loan records, all bearing the same telltale signature of artificially manufactured debt he'd been tracking for months.
"This is it." he murmured. "Proof, finally."
But the moment he extracted the data into his portable drive, a soft chime rang out — not from any alarm they'd anticipated, but from a secondary security layer buried deep in the vault's own structure, one Aiden had never known existed.
"Move!" Morgana hissed, already pulling him toward the shaft as red light began pulsing through the corridor behind them.
They scrambled back into the narrow maintenance tunnel, the space barely wide enough for one person, let alone two moving in tandem. Halfway through, Aiden's foot caught on a jagged piece of old piping, wedging his leg painfully against the metal wall.
"Go!" he said, trying to free himself, aware of the guards' voices growing louder behind them. "Don't wait for me!"
"Don't be an idiot." Morgana snapped, turning back despite the risk, gripping his arm and pulling with everything she had until his leg came free with a sharp jolt of pain. "We're partners. I don't leave partners behind."
They burst out of the shaft's far end together, collapsing against the cold night air, chests heaving, hearts pounding from both the chase and the adrenaline still coursing through them. For a moment, neither said anything, simply looking at each other in the moonlight, relief and something else entirely passing silently between them.
"Thank you." Aiden finally managed, still catching his breath, his hand still resting where hers had gripped his arm moments before.
"Don't mention it." Morgana replied, though the corner of her mouth twitched upward despite herself, and she found herself oddly reluctant to let go of the moment just yet.
They walked the rest of the way back to the flying car in a comfortable silence, the earlier chaos of the escape giving way to a quiet satisfaction neither of them had expected to share so easily with someone from the opposite side of everything they'd once believed in.
Later, reviewing the extracted data in the safehouse, one name appeared again and again across the fraudulent loan records — a name neither of them recognized yet, but one that would soon demand far more of their attention than either could have anticipated that night.
