Baron Dresthorne's estate security proved far heavier than either of them anticipated — not standard guards, but half-dragon enforcers, scaled and quick, patrolling the grounds with senses sharper than any human equivalent. The estate itself sprawled across several acres of manicured gardens, its central manor house rising three stories above a network of hedge mazes and ornamental fountains, all of it purchased, Morgana thought bitterly, with wealth extracted from exactly the kind of manufactured debt scheme they were trying to expose. Aiden had briefed her on the layout during the drive over, his voice carrying the particular controlled tension of someone still processing the earlier moment of vulnerability by their car, both of them retreating into operational focus as a mutually convenient distraction.
What was meant to be a quiet infiltration to freeze the Baron's illicit assets turned, within minutes, into an open confrontation. A tripwire ward Aiden's intelligence hadn't accounted for triggered the moment they crossed the estate's inner perimeter, flooding the gardens with a low, resonant alarm tone that sent enforcers converging from three directions at once.
"So much for subtlety." Morgana muttered, ducking behind a stone pillar as a burst of draconic flame scorched the air where she'd stood moments before, the heat of it washing over her exposed skin even from several feet away.
"Focus on disabling, not killing!" Aiden called out, firing a suppression round at the nearest enforcer, buying Morgana a few seconds to reposition. His voice carried the particular calm authority she'd come to associate with him under pressure, a steadiness that had, more than once during their brief partnership, helped anchor her own focus in the middle of chaos.
The fight moved fast and chaotic through the estate's manicured gardens, both of them working in tandem now with an ease that had become almost instinctive over the past days, the earlier tension from the car ride entirely forgotten beneath the urgency of the moment. Morgana vaulted over a low hedge, rolling to avoid a swipe from one enforcer's clawed hand, coming up already firing at the creature's exposed shoulder joint where the scaled hide grew thinner. Aiden moved parallel to her, methodically working through the guards on his own flank with the precision of someone who'd studied combat theory even if he'd rarely had cause to apply it before their partnership began.
"Three more coming from the east wing!" Aiden shouted, spotting movement through a gap in the hedges.
"I see them!" Morgana called back, already adjusting her position to cover the new angle of attack.
But when Morgana ducked behind a hedge to reload, she found herself suddenly cornered, an enforcer's massive clawed hand swinging directly toward her before she could raise her weapon in time. The creature had circled behind her during the chaos, using the maze-like structure of the garden to approach from a blind spot she hadn't accounted for, its scaled face twisted into something between a grin and a snarl as it closed the final distance.
"Morgana!" Aiden shouted, closing the distance in a desperate sprint, tackling her sideways just as the claws swept through empty air where she'd been standing, the enforcer's swing missing by mere inches, close enough that Morgana felt the displaced air rush past her face.
They hit the ground together hard, rolling once before coming to a stop, Aiden's arm braced protectively over her, both of them breathing hard, faces suddenly, unexpectedly close in the aftermath of the near miss. The impact had knocked the wind from her slightly, and for a moment, all she could focus on was the weight of him half-covering her, the frantic thud of his heartbeat audible even through the fabric separating them, and the wide, startled look in his eyes that mirrored, she suspected, the same adrenaline-fueled shock running through her own body.
For one suspended moment, neither of them moved. Morgana's eyes met his, wide with the last traces of adrenaline, and something else neither had quite allowed themselves to name until now. Aiden's hand still rested against her shoulder where he'd pulled her clear, and the warmth of it lingered a beat longer than the situation strictly required. Whatever wall had gone up between them during the drive over seemed, in this single suspended second, to have quietly crumbled without either of them deciding to tear it down. She could see, this close, the small scar above his left eyebrow she'd never noticed before, the particular shade of gray in his eyes that seemed to shift depending on the light, details that had no business mattering in the middle of an active firefight and yet, somehow, imprinted themselves on her memory regardless.
Somewhere in the back of her mind, a small, rational voice reminded her that enforcers were still converging on their position, that this was neither the time nor the place, that four years of careful self-discipline had taught her better than to let a near-death adrenaline rush masquerade as something more meaningful. She ignored that voice entirely, at least for the length of this single suspended breath.
"Are you all right?" he asked, his voice rougher than usual, barely above a whisper, close enough that she could feel the words more than hear them.
"I'm fine." she managed, her own voice equally unsteady. "You?"
"Fine." he echoed, though neither of them moved to disentangle themselves, some mutual, unspoken reluctance keeping them frozen in place a moment longer than either could easily justify. His weight was still braced over her, one hand planted in the grass beside her head, close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from him even through the thin barrier of both their jackets.
Then the enforcer's roar snapped them both back to the present, and they scrambled apart, weapons raised, the moment folding itself away beneath the urgent demands of the fight still raging around them. Aiden rolled to his feet first, offering a hand to pull Morgana up, and she took it without hesitation, the brief contact carrying an echo of the moment before that neither of them acknowledged aloud. His grip was steady despite everything, and for just a fraction of a second longer than necessary, neither of them let go.
"Behind you!" Morgana shouted, firing past his shoulder at another enforcer closing in from the opposite direction, the shot catching the creature square in its exposed throat and sending it stumbling backward with a pained screech.
"Thanks." Aiden said, breathless, already turning to face the next threat.
They fought on through the gardens for several more minutes, the earlier synchronicity between them somehow sharpened rather than disrupted by the moment they'd just shared, as though the brief collision of bodies had recalibrated something in how well they anticipated each other's movements. Morgana found herself covering angles she instinctively knew Aiden would leave exposed, while he, in turn, seemed to predict exactly when she'd need suppressing fire to cover a repositioning maneuver. Twice more, an enforcer nearly closed the distance on one of them, and both times, the other was already moving to intervene before a shout of warning even left their throat, the kind of seamless coordination that usually took partners years to develop rather than weeks.
"You're reading my mind out here." Aiden called out at one point, ducking a swipe while covering Morgana's flank simultaneously.
"Don't get used to it." she called back, though there was no real bite in the words, only breathless exertion and something that might have been the beginning of a laugh. A part of her wondered, even amid the chaos, how two people who'd started as enemies could have arrived here so quickly — anticipating each other's next move with the ease of longtime partners rather than a pairing barely two weeks old.
"There's the vault access." Aiden called out, pointing toward a reinforced door built into the side of the manor house, half-hidden behind an ornamental trellis thick with flowering vines. "Dresthorne's personal financial records should be stored there, along with whatever liquid assets he hasn't already moved."
"Cover me." Morgana said, already sprinting toward the door, dodging a final burst of draconic flame that scorched the trellis behind her, sending burning vine fragments scattering across the manicured lawn.
Aiden held the remaining enforcers at bay with a combination of suppression fire and the last of his defensive charms, buying her the precious seconds she needed to work through the vault's lock — a task considerably easier than the biometric systems they'd encountered at the Bank's own facilities, since Dresthorne had apparently trusted old money and old-fashioned mechanical security over anything more sophisticated.
"Got it!" Morgana called, the heavy door swinging open to reveal a modest chamber lined with ledgers, deed boxes, and a single enchanted safe humming with protective wards.
She worked quickly, cross-referencing the physical ledgers against the financial patterns they'd already identified, pulling anything that matched the telltale signature of the manufactured debt scheme while Aiden held the entrance, occasionally firing warning shots to keep the enforcers at a cautious distance rather than risk a direct assault into the confined space of the vault. Her hands moved with practiced efficiency despite the adrenaline still coursing through her system, years of similar high-pressure searches through hostile territory having trained the motion into something closer to muscle memory than conscious thought.
"Found something." Morgana called out, flipping through a ledger marked with Dresthorne's personal seal. "Records of transfers to at least six shell accounts, all dated within the last three months, right around when the manufactured debt pattern started accelerating." She flipped further, her breath catching slightly at what she found next. "And a name. Recurring across half these transfers. Someone at the Bank, coded but not well enough to hide entirely."
"Bring it. We'll decode it once we're clear." Aiden said, glancing back at her briefly before returning his attention to the enforcers still pacing at a wary distance, clearly reluctant to charge directly into a space where their size became a liability rather than an advantage.
Morgana gathered what she could — the ledger, several loose documents bearing suspicious transaction records, and, after a moment's hesitation, the contents of the enchanted safe itself, which yielded to a combination of her own lockpicking skill and a small charm Aiden had taught her days earlier for neutralizing basic ward structures. She stuffed everything into the reinforced satchel she'd brought specifically for this purpose, the weight of it settling heavily against her hip as she rejoined Aiden at the vault entrance.
"Time to go." she said, and together they began fighting their way back toward the estate's outer wall, the enforcers pursuing with renewed aggression now that their quarry was visibly retreating with something valuable in hand.
The retreat proved nearly as chaotic as the initial confrontation, both of them trading suppressing fire as they moved backward through the gardens, using the hedge maze's twisting paths to break line of sight whenever possible. Twice, Morgana felt the heat of draconic flame close enough to singe the edges of her jacket, and once, Aiden took a glancing blow from a clawed swipe that tore through his sleeve without quite reaching skin, a fact he only mentioned afterward, dismissing it as inconsequential in the moment. She noticed anyway, filing it away alongside every other small detail about him she seemed to be accumulating without quite meaning to — the way he favored his left side slightly after the blow, the brief flash of pain he suppressed almost before it fully registered on his face.
"You're hurt." she said, catching sight of the torn fabric as they paused briefly behind a stone fountain to catch their breath.
"It's nothing." he said, though the slight stiffness in his movement suggested otherwise. "We can look at it once we're clear."
"Stubborn." she muttered, though there was no real heat in the accusation, only a note of something closer to fond exasperation that surprised her even as she said it.
They finally cleared the estate wall through a service gate Morgana had identified during their initial approach, dropping down into the narrow access road beyond just as the pursuing enforcers reached the wall themselves, apparently under some standing order not to pursue beyond the estate's boundary — a detail that struck Morgana as significant, suggesting Dresthorne's security protocols were designed more to protect his assets from outside threats than to actively hunt down intruders once they'd fled.
They finished the mission efficiently after that, freezing the Baron's assets exactly as planned, moving with a renewed coordination that left the remaining enforcers scrambling to keep up, the physical evidence secured safely in Morgana's satchel providing tangible proof of everything they'd suspected about Dresthorne's involvement in the wider conspiracy. Neither mentioned the moment on the ground as they made their way back to the flying car afterward, both of them settling into their seats with the particular exhausted quiet that followed any successful but costly operation.
But something had shifted between them — the earlier tension from the drive over had dissolved entirely, replaced by something neither of them was ready to discuss, but both were now distinctly aware of. Morgana caught herself, more than once during the drive back toward the city, glancing at Aiden's profile in the dim light of the car's interior, cataloging small details she'd never bothered to notice before — the way his jaw tightened slightly when he was thinking through a problem, the particular careful economy of his movements even now, exhausted and coming down from adrenaline, the faint line of tension still visible at his temple from the effort of holding the enforcers at bay while she worked through the vault. She wondered, watching him, when exactly she'd started paying this much attention to details that had nothing to do with tactical assessment.
"Good work today." Aiden said as they drove away, his voice carrying a warmth that hadn't been there hours earlier, a warmth that seemed to extend beyond simple professional satisfaction into something neither of them had yet found words for.
"You too." Morgana replied, a small, genuine smile crossing her face despite herself, the silence of before entirely forgotten beneath something new and unspoken settling quietly in its place. She found herself, unexpectedly, wanting to reach across the small space between the seats and take his hand, an impulse so foreign to her usual careful self-control that she nearly laughed at herself for feeling it. Four years of building walls, and here she was, undone by a shared near-miss and the warmth of a hand against her shoulder.
"We should get this evidence somewhere safe." Aiden said, nodding toward the satchel resting between her feet. "The safehouse, probably, before we head back to your garage."
"Agreed." Morgana said, though something in her voice suggested she wasn't entirely thinking about evidence storage protocols in that moment, her attention still lingering on the memory of his arm braced over her, the warmth of his hand against her shoulder, the wide, startled look in his eyes that had mirrored her own.
The drive continued in a silence that felt entirely different from the tension of their earlier journey to the estate — not awkward, not strained, but charged with a quiet anticipation neither of them acknowledged directly, both content, for now, to let the unspoken thing between them simply exist without demanding immediate resolution. Whatever this partnership had started as, Morgana thought, watching the city lights blur past the window, it had clearly become something else entirely somewhere along the way, and she found, to her own surprise, that she wasn't afraid of where that realization might eventually lead.
At the safehouse, Aiden finally allowed her to look at the shallow cut along his forearm where the enforcer's claw had grazed him, his sleeve rolled back to reveal a thin line of dried blood that had already begun to scab over. She cleaned it with more care than the minor injury strictly required, her fingers steady despite the strange awareness humming beneath her skin at the simple act of touching him, aware of him watching her work with an expression she couldn't quite read, something softer than his usual careful composure.
"You didn't have to do that." he said quietly, once she'd finished.
"I know." she replied, not looking up from the makeshift bandage she was securing. "I wanted to."
Neither of them commented further on the admission, though something in the quality of the silence that followed felt like its own kind of answer, settling comfortably between them as they finally turned their attention to the evidence spread across the safehouse table — the ledger, the shell account records, and the coded name that would, in the days to come, demand far more of their combined attention than either of them yet suspected.
Whatever waited for them in that coded name buried among Dresthorne's ledgers, they would face it the way they'd faced everything else tonight — together, and with considerably less caution about the growing thing between them than either had shown just hours before.
For now, though, neither of them was in any hurry to move past this quiet, unfamiliar closeness, the evidence on the table waiting patiently for the moment they were finally ready to turn their full attention back to the conspiracy still unfolding around them. Whatever came next, they would face it exactly as they'd faced tonight — together, and without the careful distance either of them had once insisted on maintaining. The name buried in Dresthorne's ledgers would have to wait until morning to be decoded, but the answer it promised felt, for the first time, close enough to touch. They would need it, whatever it turned out to be. For tonight, though, the discovery could rest. So, it seemed, could they. Morning would bring its own demands soon enough. Tonight belonged to something quieter, something neither of them had expected to find in the middle of a conspiracy this dangerous.
