The hidden garage sat deep beneath an abandoned auto shop at the edge of Ledgerhold's Western slums, where the city's magical streetlights barely reached. The only light here came from old industrial lamps hanging from the ceiling, and from the faint blue glow of the enchanted motorcycle parked in the middle of the room — a machine rebuilt with magic, smooth and silent enough to slip through the narrowest alleys in the city.
Morgana sat on the workbench, one leg drawn up, disassembling her magical sniper rifle for maintenance, the familiar rhythm of cleaning and reassembling the weapon a small ritual of calm before every job. Her platinum hair was tied back, revealing the faint light-tattoo running along her temple — the royal elven mark she had never let anyone see in full, always hidden beneath her hair or a hood.
"Same formation as always." she said, decisive, eyes never leaving the barrel she was reassembling. "Finn, you're on remote lockpicking. Wren, cover from the rooftop across the street. I'll go in directly and draw the Mana myself."
Around her, seven gang members checked their gear one final time — outlaws the Ledgerhold press had taken to calling the "Robin Hood Gang," half with contempt, half with grudging admiration. They didn't steal out of greed. They drained Mana from the Ancient Bank's ATMs and redistributed it to families who couldn't afford medical treatment, who couldn't afford to heat their homes through the brutal magical winter.
"Tonight's target is ATM 47, Western Industrial District." Morgana continued, pointing to a glowing map hovering in the middle of the room. "Intel says it's one of the highest-traffic terminals in the area, serving the accounts directly tied to the recent debt collection sweep. We pull 2,000 units, split it immediately tonight among the twelve families Wren has registered."
"Security's been beefed up there, boss." Finn, the youngest member of the crew, spoke up, a hint of worry in his voice. "After the mass collection two weeks ago, they doubled up on that whole district."
"I know." Morgana replied, not looking up. "Which is exactly why we go tonight, before they tighten it any further."
Every member of the group carried a story that had led them here. Finn, the nineteen-year-old with a gift for hacking security systems, had once been the son of a family stripped of everything when his father died from an unpayable medical debt. Wren, Morgana's most trusted deputy and closest friend, had once worked in the Ancient Bank's internal audit department before she could no longer stomach signing off on hundreds of soul-seizure orders a month. Others — a one-armed orc veteran from a territorial Mana war, a half-dragon woman disowned by her clan for refusing to deal black-market Mana — all found in Morgana something the official Ledgerhold system had never given them: a reason to fight, and a place to belong.
Morgana had built this group from nothing, one person at a time, over the four years since she severed all ties with the elven royal court. To them, she wasn't a fallen princess or a traitor to her bloodline — she was simply the leader, always first into the most dangerous job, never leaving a single member behind. She had learned, over those four years, that survival outside the law meant never fully trusting a plan, no matter how well it had worked before — every job carried the seed of its own failure, and the difference between leaders who lasted and the ones who didn't was how quickly they could adapt when a plan came apart.
None of them knew the full truth of who she had been before Ledgerhold. Only Wren carried that secret, and even she had only ever heard fragments, pieced together over years of late-night conversations after difficult jobs, when Morgana's guard slipped just enough to let a little of the past through.
Just then, the garage door creaked open. A messenger stepped in, tense, carrying a sealed envelope bearing the elven royal insignia. The room went silent.
"Your Highness." the messenger said, voice trembling — well aware of how much Morgana hated the title. "I've been ordered to deliver this letter directly into your hands."
Morgana set down her rifle, stood, and took the envelope without a word. She tore it open, skimming the first few lines — enough to recognize her mother's familiar tone, blending affection with the kind of pressure only royalty could apply: "...the Council of Elders is applying more pressure by the day... if you don't return before the Winter Ceremony, I fear I can no longer protect you from their decision..."
Her face hardened for a fraction of a second — fast enough that most of the room didn't notice, but slow enough for Wren, standing closest, to catch it.
"It's nothing important." Morgana said, her voice back to calm, folding the letter without finishing it and tucking it into her jacket. "Messenger, go. Tell the court I've received the letter."
The messenger bowed and left quickly, visibly relieved not to witness a harsher reaction.
"You okay?" Wren asked quietly once the others had turned back to their work.
"I'm always okay." Morgana replied, her voice sharper than necessary. She returned to the workbench, reassembling the rest of the rifle with sharp, almost angry motions. Wren didn't push further — four years of friendship had taught her exactly when to let a silence sit, and when pressing would only make Morgana retreat further behind her walls.
The truth was, every time a letter like this arrived, some part of her felt pulled back into the past — the marble halls of the elven palace, the rigid ceremonies, her mother's disappointed eyes each time she rejected another political marriage. She had left all of that five years ago, choosing to live in the dusty alleys of Ledgerhold, where she could be herself — strong, free, and never forced to smile for people who saw nothing but political value in every word she spoke.
She still remembered the night she left the palace — not a loud, dramatic escape, but a quiet decision, carefully prepared over months. She had taken off her crown, left a short letter for her mother, and vanished into the night with nothing but a small bag and the conviction that she deserved to live a life of her own choosing. The Council of Elders had declared her a "traitor to the bloodline" within a week — a title that, painful as it was, Morgana still quietly considered proof she had chosen correctly.
But freedom was never free, in this world or any other. Every letter was a reminder that no matter how far she ran, the bloodline would always find her, and one day she would have to face the choice she'd been avoiding for five years. The Winter Ceremony was only months away — and under ancient elven law, if the direct heir failed to appear before the Council three times in a row, the throne would automatically pass to a distant branch of the family, triggering a bloody power struggle Morgana knew her mother could not withstand alone.
She thought about her mother, alone in the palace, fielding pressure from the Council on her behalf, buying her daughter time she hadn't asked for and couldn't repay. Guilt was not an emotion Morgana allowed herself often — it served no tactical purpose, and she had trained herself over the years to set it aside in favor of clearer thinking. But guilt over her mother's position crept in anyway, quiet and persistent, no matter how many times she pushed it down. The Council of Elders had never sent an ultimatum with such a specific deadline before — always vague threats, endless negotiations through intermediaries, never a hard line drawn in the sand. The change in tone worried her more than she wanted to admit, even to Wren.
She didn't let herself dwell on it longer. She shook her head, pulled on her enchanted leather jacket, checked her ammunition one last time. Tonight wasn't the time to think about the crown. Tonight, twelve families were waiting for her.
The convoy of motorcycles glided through the darkness, engines cut early to coast in silence, as they approached the Western Industrial District — where enchantment-parts factories stood still in the night, and among them, ATM number 47 glowed faintly like an institutionalized lighthouse of greed.
"Position ready." Wren reported through the magical earpiece, already on the rooftop across the street with her sniper rifle.
"Going in." Morgana replied curtly, cutting the motorcycle's engine, letting it coast the final meters in silence.
Finn was already crouched beside the ATM, fingers flying across a hidden control panel, breaking through layer after layer of security encryption with his custom-built hacking tools. Sweat beaded on his forehead despite the cold night air, his tongue poking out slightly between his teeth in the same look of fierce concentration he'd worn since he was fifteen years old, learning to hack on a battered secondhand terminal in the back of the garage.
"Security's tighter than expected." Finn whispered, sweat beading on his forehead despite the cold night. "They added a new biometric authentication layer."
"Can you handle it?" Morgana asked, standing guard beside him, hand resting on her weapon, eyes sweeping the empty street in a slow, practiced rhythm that never lingered too long on any one point, exactly as she'd trained every member of the crew to do.
"Give me thirty more seconds."
Thirty seconds crawled by. Finally, a soft click sounded, and the ATM's screen shifted to green — access granted.
"We're in!" Finn whispered, excited.
Morgana immediately stepped forward, placing her hand on the ATM's cold metal surface, activating a small device hidden in her glove — a Mana redirection tool she had built herself, drawing on knowledge she'd secretly studied in the royal library before leaving everything behind. A faint golden light began flowing from the ATM into a small container strapped to her hip.
Halfway through the transfer, a soft beep, almost inaudible, sounded from deep inside the ATM — a silent alarm signal that no standard detection system the gang carried could catch, designed specifically not to trigger any local alert but to quietly send a signal back to the Bank's central monitoring.
No one in the group knew this had just happened. Morgana kept her eyes on the street, counting the seconds in her head, the same mental discipline she had learned as a child sitting through hours of court proceedings where showing impatience was considered a diplomatic failure. That old training, ironically, had become one of her most valuable tools as a fugitive.
"How much longer?" Morgana asked, eyes still scanning for threats.
"About ninety seconds for the full 2,000 units." Finn replied.
This was the most dangerous moment of any job — ninety seconds standing exposed, vulnerable to any patrol that might appear. But Morgana had long since learned that for the families waiting at home for life-saving treatment, ninety seconds of risk was a small price to pay.
She thought of little Sable, six years old, daughter of an orc widow living three blocks away, needing Mana therapy for a nutritional magic deficiency since birth. She thought of old Tam, a retired blacksmith who'd lost the ability to heat his home since the Bank cut subsidies for those too old to work. She thought of dozens of other faces — people she had met personally on her weekly Mana distribution runs, people who had learned to trust an outlaw more than the very financial system ruling their lives.
Sometimes, in quiet moments like this, Morgana wondered whether she was trying to atone for something — whether, deep down, she felt guilty for having been born into privilege while people like Sable had to fight for every scrap of survival. But she quickly pushed the thought aside. This wasn't about atonement. This was about justice, plain and simple.
"Done!" Finn whispered. "2,000 units, fully transferred."
"Fall back." Morgana ordered, sealing the container, turning to move quickly toward the motorcycle.
The group moved with the speed and silence of hundreds of rehearsals, vanishing into the alleys before any patrol could arrive. On the way back to the garage, the mood in the convoy was thick with relief mixed with exhilaration — another successful job, another night where justice, at least their version of it, had won. Somewhere behind them, Wren whooped quietly over the comm line, and even the usually stoic orc veteran allowed himself a rare grin as he checked his weapon back into its holster.
But when they stopped briefly at a quiet intersection to divide the Mana according to Wren's list, Morgana couldn't fully enjoy the brief celebration. The letter in her jacket pocket felt like a weight, every word from it echoing quietly: "...if you don't return before the Winter Ceremony..."
"What's on your mind?" Wren asked, coming to sit beside her.
"Nothing." Morgana replied, then after a pause, added, quieter than usual. "Just thinking about how much longer we can keep doing this before the Bank tightens security so much there's no gap left to slip through."
That wasn't entirely a lie, but it wasn't the whole truth either. Wren, who had walked with her since the earliest days after leaving the palace, looked at her with understanding but didn't press further.
Just then, Finn's communicator crackled urgently.
"Morgana! I just picked up a signal — looks like the ATM sent a silent alert to Bank central before we finished the withdrawal! An enforcement team is being dispatched, and they have approximate location data on our garage!"
The smile vanished from Morgana's face instantly, replaced by sharp focus.
"They cannot find the garage." she said immediately, already standing, her mind racing through contingency routes she had mapped months ago for exactly this kind of emergency. "We're not going back there. Move the Mana to the backup shelter now."
"The unfinished construction site on Copperline?" Wren asked, already gathering gear.
"That's the one." Morgana nodded, jumping onto her motorcycle, starting the engine. "Signal everyone. We move now." She kept her voice level, betraying none of the sudden tightness in her chest — not from fear of the Bank's response team, which she had evaded more times than she could count, but from the creeping sense that tonight, of all nights, was somehow different, though she could not yet say why.
The convoy sped back into the night once more, this time with an urgency completely different from before — no longer a successful job to celebrate, but a chase just beginning.
The garage life had taught Morgana to compartmentalize in ways the palace never had — there, every emotion had been a performance for an audience of nobles and advisors; here, emotion was simply something to be managed quietly, privately, while the work continued. It was, in its own strange way, more honest than anything she'd experienced growing up, even if it left her carrying burdens alone that she might once have shared with a full court of attendants.
As the convoy approached the outskirts of the industrial district near Copperline, Finn glanced over at her, breaking the silence. "You've gone quiet, boss. Everything okay?"
"Just thinking through the drop points." Morgana replied, falling back into the familiar rhythm of command. "Once we're settled, I want the Mana split into separate caches, not concentrated in one spot."
"Smart." Finn said, nodding, unaware that half of Morgana's mind remained fixed on a letter sealed with royal wax rather than on the logistics of their retreat — none of them knew that at the very construction site they were heading toward, another debt-recovery team from the Ancient Bank, led by a man with cold eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses, was also on its way, carrying orders to sweep the very same illegal Mana she had just risked everything to obtain.
There was a strange irony in it, Morgana thought, though she had no way yet of grasping its full weight: the very night she was running from one kind of authority, she was riding straight toward another — and neither of them, not the Council of Elders nor the Ancient Bank, could have predicted what that collision would set in motion. She had spent five years building walls between the two halves of her life — the princess she had been, and the outlaw she had become — never imagining that a single night could bring both crashing into a stranger's orbit at once.
Night wind whipped past Morgana's ears as she accelerated, her platinum hair streaming behind her like a white flag against the darkness. She had no way of knowing that within a few hours, the path she was on would collide with an entirely different one — and that intersection would reshape the rest of her life in ways no ultimatum from the royal court ever could.
Whatever waited for her at Copperline, Morgana told herself, it couldn't be worse than what she was already carrying — a crown she didn't want, a mother she couldn't protect from a distance, and a debt-ridden city that needed her more than the palace ever had. She gripped the throttle and pushed the motorcycle faster into the dark, unaware that the man racing toward the very same destination carried burdens of his own just as heavy, just as hidden behind a composed exterior — and that the two of them, running from entirely different storms, were about to end up standing in the eye of the very same one.
For now, though, all that mattered was the road ahead, the cargo secured at her hip, and the twelve families counting on her to deliver what she'd promised.
Somewhere behind her, the rest of the convoy fell into formation without needing to be told, an unspoken trust built over years of shared risk. Whatever came next, Morgana knew, they would face it the way they always had — together, and on their own terms, not the Bank's, and not the Council's.
