Three days is not a long time to prepare for something that has no manual.
Zack spent them the way he spent most things that required sustained attention: methodically, without drama, breaking the problem into its component parts and addressing each one in sequence. The first day he practiced with the blade, learning its responses, the way it warmed and brightened in relation to his intention, the way it moved differently from any weapon he had trained with — less like an extension of his arm and more like a collaborator, something with its own sense of where it wanted to go. The second day he read. There was not much to read. The Void existed in Oakhaven's literature the way certain things existed in cities that had learned to live alongside the uncanny: acknowledged in folklore, avoided in official discourse, present in the particular sideways grammar of people who knew better than to say certain things directly. He found three books in the library's lower archive, two of which were useless and one of which was not, and he sat with the useful one for most of the day and took notes in the margin of a receipt he found in his jacket pocket because he hadn't thought to bring paper.
The third day he put his affairs in order.
He did this with the same emotional register he would have brought to reorganizing a closet — efficiently, without sentiment, making sure the practical things were handled. He wrote down the location of the storage unit where he'd put Ren's things, in case someone needed to know. He left the key on the kitchen counter. He paid the bills that were due and set the others to automatic. He called no one, because there was no one to call who would receive the information well, and receiving information poorly was a burden he had no interest in placing on anyone.
He did not think of this as pessimism. He thought of it as consistency. He prepared for contingencies. He had always prepared for contingencies. The contingency happening to be his own non-return was logistically the same as any other contingency and required the same approach.
This was what he told himself.
The third night, he went to the dojo.
---
He had been sitting on the floor for forty minutes before he admitted he was stalling.
The admission arrived with the particular irritation of self-knowledge you've been avoiding: sudden, accurate, slightly unwelcome. He was sitting cross-legged in the center of the dojo floor with the blade across his knees and the room dark around him and Oakhaven doing its glowing outside the windows, and he was not meditating, and he was not preparing, and he was not doing anything that could be described as productive. He was sitting.
He was not afraid.
He examined this claim carefully, because it seemed like the kind of claim that deserved scrutiny. He checked for the physical signatures of fear — the elevated heart rate, the tightness across the chest, the particular quality of attention that fear produced, hyperaware and narrow. None of them were present. What was present was something more unusual, something he didn't immediately have a word for: a reluctance that was not about the destination but about the arrival.
Because once he went in, he would see her.
And he did not know what to say.
He had not considered this before, which was its own kind of information about him. He had organized the problem — find the Void, find the blade, find the way in — and had moved through each step with the focus of someone who understood that focusing on the step in front of you was how you got through things. He had not looked past the threshold to what came after it. He had not thought, specifically, about the moment of finding her, because the finding was the goal and the mind tends not to look past goals.
But now, sitting in the dark with the thing that would take him to her warm in his hands, he was looking past it.
She was in there. In some form, in some state, she was in there. And he was going to walk through a door in the fabric of the world and she was going to be on the other side of it, and the first thing he would have to do was look at her, and he did not know how to do that anymore — not now that he knew what looking had meant, what it had cost her that he hadn't done it right.
---
The last time he had seen her was a Wednesday.
He knew it was a Wednesday because he had had an early finish and she had not, and she had texted him sometime in the afternoon — he still had the text, he had not been able to make himself delete any of them — saying she'd be late and not to wait for dinner. He had made dinner anyway and kept it warm. She had come in around eight-thirty, coat still on, keys in her hand, and she had stood in the kitchen doorway and looked at the food on the stove and said something. He couldn't remember exactly what. Something that acknowledged it. Something that was warm and a little tired and entirely normal.
He had said something back.
She had taken her coat off and sat down and they had eaten and talked about something — he genuinely could not recover what, the conversation had been so ordinary that it hadn't encoded properly, which was its own specific cruelty — and at some point the evening had ended and they had slept and in the morning she had been gone before he woke up, which was not unusual, she had early shifts sometimes, and he had not thought anything of it.
He had not known.
That was the thing about last times: they were indistinguishable from the times before them. They wore the same clothes. They used the same words. They arrived and passed without any of the gravity they deserved, because gravity was only assigned in retrospect, by the people left behind to do the assigning.
He had eaten dinner with her and talked about something ordinary and gone to sleep and that had been the last time, and he hadn't known, and now he was sitting in the dark three months and fourteen days later holding a glowing blade and about to walk into the place where dead people went, and the thing stopping him was that he didn't know what you said to someone when you saw them for the second-to-last time and didn't realize it and then got a third time that no one was supposed to get.
---
Maren had said the Void would manifest what was unresolved.
He had nodded when she said it, the nod of someone filing information away for later. Later was now, and he sat with the inventory of what he was carrying into that place, because if it was going to find a shape he should at least know what he was bringing.
He went through it like a list. He had always been better with lists.
The evening with the book. Her on the couch, him next to her, the television on low, and him registering *fine* and moving on. That was on the list.
The night with the light. Her on the edge of the bed, shoulders curved, and him thinking *tired* and turning off the lamp. That was on the list.
The conflict — small, he couldn't even remember the subject now, something domestic and forgettable — after which she had looked like she was about to say something that mattered, and then had smiled and said *it's fine* and he had accepted it. That was on the list.
All the times he had asked *are you okay* and accepted *yes* without asking the follow-up question, the one that would have required her to do more than give him the answer that ended the conversation. All the times he had known what she needed before she said it — or believed he had — and acted on his knowing rather than checking. All the times he had loved her with his full and focused attention in the direction he had decided love should go.
The list was not long.
That was the part he kept coming back to. He had expected, in the abstract accounting of his failures, something more voluminous. More dramatic. Something he could point to and say: *there, that's where it went wrong, that's the thing I did.* Instead he had this: a pattern of small choices, unremarkable in isolation, legible only in aggregate. A thousand tiny decisions to take the surface at face value. A thousand small abdications of the question he should have kept asking.
The Void was going to make these into something he had to look at.
He was, he found, ready to look.
---
He got up.
Not toward the door — toward the corner. The corner where the chair was. He crossed the room and stood in front of it, the blade loose in his right hand, and looked at the chair the way he'd been practicing looking at things: past the surface of it, at what it was doing.
It was a chair that someone had sat in.
It was a chair that had a particular person's shape in its relationship to this room, in the way it faced the center of the floor, in the scuff marks on the left leg from the uneven tile it used to sit on before he'd moved it slightly left, adjusting without being asked because he'd noticed she had to be careful about where she put her weight. He had noticed that. He had moved the chair. He had not said anything about it.
He put his hand on the back of it.
The wood was cool. Slightly rough at the top edge where the finish had worn. He stood with his hand on it and felt the solidity of it, the reality of it, the way objects that had been near someone persisted in being objects after the someone was gone, indifferent to the weight of meaning placed on them.
He said it out loud.
He wasn't sure why. There was no one in the room and the room did not care and the chair certainly did not care, and he was not a person who spoke to empty rooms as a general practice. But the words needed to be outside of him. They had been inside long enough.
*I didn't know what you needed,* he said. His voice was even. He had not planned for it to be even; it simply was, in the way that some things were steady at their core regardless of what was happening at the surface. *I thought I did. I thought knowing what I felt was the same as knowing what you needed. I was wrong about that and I didn't ask and I'm sorry that sorry doesn't — that it can't —*
He stopped.
Started again.
*I'm sorry it doesn't fix anything,* he said. *I know it doesn't. I'm not saying it because I think it changes what happened. I'm saying it because I'm going to go in there and find you, and when I do, I wanted to have said it here first. Where it's just me. So that when I say it to you it's not the first time I've said it. So that I've — practiced the shape of it.*
He took his hand off the chair.
He stood in the center of the room.
Maren had said: hold it and mean to cross. He held it. He thought about meaning — what it meant to mean something, in the specific sense she'd indicated, the sense of directed intention rather than passive desire. He had spent three months meaning to survive. He had spent fourteen days meaning to find a way in. Now he meant something more specific, and he let it take up its full space in his chest without trying to manage it or contain it or make it smaller than it was.
He meant to find her.
Not to fix what had happened. Not to apologize his way into her forgiveness. Not to carry her out of the dark like a problem he'd solved. He meant to find her and be in the same place as her and this time, this time, look at her without already knowing what he was going to see. Ask without already having the answer. Be in the room with her the way he had failed to be in the room with her, present to the actual version of her rather than the version he had assembled from the data points he'd chosen to collect.
He meant that.
The blade knew.
It was not dramatic — he had half-expected dramatic, some part of him had been braced for it, the childhood grammar of magic being thunder and light and decisive transformation. What happened instead was quieter and stranger: the light the blade gave off shifted in quality rather than intensity, becoming less like luminescence and more like *attention*, directed outward rather than ambient, and the room around him began to have a different relationship with its own edges. The walls did not dissolve. The floor did not fall away. But the corners became suggestions rather than certainties, and the air developed a texture it hadn't had before, a weight and a resistance that was not quite wind and not quite water but had properties of both.
He looked at the place where the far wall was becoming less sure of itself.
It was not a door. It was not a gate. It was more like — a place where the room had stopped insisting. A margin where the certainty of physical space had loosened its grip and left a gap that was, if you were holding the right thing and meaning the right thing, passable.
He looked at it for a moment.
He looked back at the room. The bag on its chain. The mirror on the east wall, which showed him standing in the center of the floor with a glowing blade and an expression he couldn't read from this angle, which was probably accurate. The chair in the corner, small and wooden and slightly uneven, facing the center of the floor where he always worked.
He turned back to the gap in the world.
There was nothing else to do with his hands. There was nothing else to say. The equation he'd been running for three months and fourteen days had resolved into this: one person, one door, one reason that was less heroic and more human than he would have chosen if he'd been constructing the story from the outside. He wasn't going in because he was brave. He wasn't going in because he was certain it would work. He was going in because she was in there and he had sat in enough dark rooms with enough quiet and he was done with the not-trying.
He stepped through.
The world he knew sealed behind him like water after a stone, complete and indifferent, and the Void opened on all sides at once — not dark, not light, but something that preceded both of those categories, something that made the eyes report sensation without quite achieving vision — and Zack stood in the middle of it with his blade and his list and his specific, practiced intention, and he breathed in whatever passed for air in this place, and he began.
