She had been coming to the hospital since September.
This was not something she had discussed with Aiden, though she suspected he knew — or would have known, if he had thought to trace the pattern of where she went on the afternoons when she was not at the lake, not at the library, not at the places they had established as their places. She came to room 312 in the late afternoons when the ward was quiet and the light through the window was the particular warm-grey of November, and she sat in the chair beside her own bed and watched the monitors and performed what she had come to think of as maintenance.
Maintenance was: being here. Looking at the body that was hers. Acknowledging the fact of the connection rather than holding it at distance, which was what she had done in the early months when the sight of the body had been intolerable in the way that mirrors were intolerable before you had adjusted to what they showed.
She had adjusted. The body was hers. It was here. The thread between them was thin but it was there, and maintenance was looking at it without flinching.
She was in the chair when she heard the elevator.
Not the elevator itself — she couldn't hear the elevator, she was not entirely certain of the mechanics of what she could and couldn't hear in her current state, it seemed to vary in ways she hadn't fully mapped. She heard, or felt, or was aware of — the approach of a frequency she had learned to recognize before the person carrying it was within visual range. Aiden Cross, somewhere in the building, moving upward.
She stood from the chair and went to the door of room 312 and looked down the corridor.
He came through the stairwell door — not the elevator, she noted, he almost always took the stairs when they were available — with a visitor's lanyard around his neck and his bag over one shoulder and the headphones at his collarbone and the quality of someone who knew where he was going and was going there.
He looked up and saw her in the doorway.
She raised her hand. He raised his in response — the wave that was not a wave, the acknowledgment that meant: *I see you, the real you, the one standing in this corridor.*
He came to room 312.
She stood aside to let him in, then stood beside him while he looked at the room. She had been in this room hundreds of times. She watched him see it for the first time.
He looked at it the way he looked at all things that were new to him: comprehensively, filing, not performing a reaction. The bed, the monitors, the IV that had been in place for a year, the particular configuration of hospital furniture that was designed for function and not for anything else. He looked at the body in the bed with the same attention — not pity, not the clinical distance of someone observing a medical situation. The attention of someone who was filing information about a person.
She blinked three times.
He looked up and met her eyes — or the location where her eyes were, which was not always the same thing, but he had become accurate — and nodded once.
"How long has she — you — been here?" he said. Self-correcting. She appreciated the self-correction.
She held up one finger. One year.
He looked at the monitors. At the date notation on the chart he could see from where he stood. "October 14," he said.
One blink.
He set his bag down by the door — carefully, not dropping it, the habit of someone who was always in environments that were not his own and had learned to enter them gently. He walked to the other side of the bed, the side opposite the chair, and stood there.
She watched him think — the particular quality of it, the interior process she had been learning to read for two months. He was not thinking about the room or the monitors or the medical situation. He was thinking about the frequency.
He reached out and placed his hand over the hand of the body in the bed.
Not touching, at first — hovering. The particular approach of someone who was asking permission before contact. She felt, or was aware of — the question of the touch coming through both sides of the connection: from her projection, watching, and from her body, which was not conscious but was not entirely without reception.
She blinked three times.
He made contact.
It was like — she did not have the right word. Like a circuit completing. Like a string plucked at one end and the vibration traveling to the other. Empathic Anchoring activating not toward her projection but toward the body, which was connected to the projection, which meant the signal arrived through both simultaneously and she felt it from both angles at once.
She blinked: three, pause, three.
He looked up from the body to her. His expression had the quality of someone who was receiving two signals from the same source and had confirmed that they matched. Something moved through his face that was not readable in his usual register — too interior, too surprised, the expression of someone who had hypothesized something and found it confirmed beyond expectation.
"I can hear both," he said. "Simultaneously."
She blinked: one.
"The same signal," he said. "From two locations." He paused. "And there's something in the space between. In the connection itself. Like a — " He paused. "Noise. In the thread."
She blinked: S-O-U-L-E-A-T-E-R.
He absorbed the letters as she gave them. "It's in the connection," he said. "Not in the body and not in the projection. In the thread."
One blink.
"That's why you can't get back on your own," he said. "It's not blocking the body or the projection. It's blocking the passage."
She had known this, or had felt it, or had had a version of it that was knowledge-shaped without being clearly articulated. Hearing him say it with the precision of someone who had confirmed it from outside was different from knowing it from inside. Different in the specific way that things were different when they were witnessed rather than only experienced.
She blinked: W-H-A-T-C-A-N-Y-O-U-D-O.
He was quiet for a moment. Still holding the body's hand. She could feel the anchor — warm, steady, the familiar frequency doing its work from this new angle.
"The Soul Eater lives in the thread," he said. "Soul-Echo follows frequencies. I can follow a frequency into a thread." He paused. "It won't be comfortable. It might not work completely the first time. But I can go in and see what's there and start to map it."
She blinked: W-H-A-T-H-A-P-P-E-N-S-T-O-Y-O-U.
"I don't know exactly," he said. "Soul-Echo at full capacity in that kind of space — I haven't done it. The risk is probably similar to the risk you face when you push your connection too far. Exhaustion, disorientation." A pause. "Possibly worse, if the Soul Eater turns from you to me."
She looked at him. At the honesty of the answer — not minimized, not dramatized. Accurate.
She blinked: D-O-N-T-R-I-S-K-I-T.
"I've thought about it," he said. "I've thought about it for three weeks, since I started understanding what the Soul Eater was. The risk to me is real. The risk to you is also real, and it's ongoing, and it's accelerating." He looked at her with the steady grey eyes. "I'd rather take a defined risk once than watch an undefined risk continue indefinitely."
She looked at him.
In the year before him she had developed, by necessity, a very good ability to assess whether people meant what they said. You developed this when your survival depended on the accuracy of the assessment — when the only things keeping you present in the world were the specific, particular memories of specific, particular people, and you needed to know which memories were real and which were the kind of memory people performed when they thought they were being watched.
He meant it.
He had been thinking about it for three weeks. He had come to the hospital not on an impulse but after three weeks of thinking, and he was here because he had thought through the risk and had arrived at: *this is the calculation I am making and this is why I am making it.*
She blinked: T-H-A-N-K-Y-O-U-F-O-R-C-O-M-I-N-G.
He looked at the letters as she gave them. Read them.
"I came before," he said. "A few times. You weren't here — you were somewhere else. The lake, I think, once." A pause. "I didn't tell you because there wasn't anything to report. I was just — learning the space."
She stood in room 312 with the information that he had been here before, multiple times, learning a space she occupied without telling her because there had been nothing to report — because he was not the kind of person who reported the fact of doing a thing when the doing of the thing was its own sufficient statement.
She reached toward him. Past the body in the bed, past the bedrail, toward him standing on the other side.
He was still.
Her hand made contact with the sleeve of his jacket.
Not through it. On it. Three seconds of genuine, solid contact — not the through-hand of her early attempts, not the cold-draft of a near-miss, but her hand on his sleeve, feeling the texture of the fabric, feeling the warmth of the arm underneath.
The monitors beeped once — not an alarm, just the single sound of a machine registering a change in something it was monitoring.
She withdrew her hand before either of them had to decide what happened next.
He looked at his sleeve. At her.
"That was stronger," he said.
One blink.
"The Soul Eater is weaker since I started anchoring toward the body," he said. "Or you're stronger. Possibly both."
She blinked: B-O-T-H.
He almost smiled. The full version of it — or close to the full version, which was more than she had seen before on his face, which was a face that was generally very economical with its expressions.
They left the hospital together — or as together as they could be, given the one-sided visibility of their togetherness. She walked beside him rather than behind him, which was something she had started doing since the lake became their regular meeting place. Beside, not following.
She blinked as they walked, using the alphabet call they had refined over weeks: *W-H-A-T-D-I-D-Y-O-U-M-E-A-N. Y-O-U-W-E-R-E-N-T-W-H-O-I-E-X-P-E-C-T-E-D.*
He walked for a moment before answering.
"In the thread," he said. "When I was reaching. I felt — you. What you are." He paused. "I expected someone who had been fading for a year. Someone weakened." He looked forward at the path. "What I found was someone who had been holding on for a year with both hands and had not let go once. That's not the same thing."
She walked beside him in the November afternoon and held this.
He had gone looking for someone fading and had found someone holding. She had not known, from inside the holding, whether the holding was sufficient. She had known only that she was still doing it. From outside, apparently, the doing of it looked like something.
She blinked: *T-H-A-T-S-W-H-Y-Y-O-U-S-A-I-D-T-H-A-T.*
"Yes," he said.
They walked back toward campus in the grey November afternoon, and she thought about a person who had looked into the worst year of her existence and had found, in the looking, something worth telling her about.
This was, she decided, a significant quality in a person.
Possibly the most significant quality she had encountered.
