It had not been an accident.
This was the thing Aiden had been working toward for three weeks, building the case from the evidence available: the Soul Eater's signature, the Registry records, the dates, the specific configuration of what had happened to Iris on October 14. He had been careful with it — careful in the way he was careful with things that would change the frame of someone's understanding of their own experience, which was a category that required particular handling.
He told her at the lake, late on a Wednesday, with the November cold settled around them and the water still in the way it was still before the real winter arrived and gave it texture.
She was on the bank beside him — she had been on the bank now for weeks, the water behind them and the campus ahead and the particular configuration of two people who had arrived, without discussing it, at a preferred distance and arrangement. He had the notepad. She was watching his face, which she had come to read with reasonable accuracy.
He told her: not an accident.
She felt the information arrive in the way significant information arrived — not like a shock, because she had been carrying, somewhere beneath consciousness, a version of this knowledge for a year. The instinct that the night of October 14 had not been random. The sense, which she had dismissed as the unreliable thinking of someone in extremis, that she had been taken rather than lost.
He told her about the Soul Eater's signature — constructed, not organic, designed with purpose. He told her about the Registry records, about the name that appeared in relation to unauthorized entity manipulation. He told her the name.
Voss. R.
She blinked: C-O-N-N-E-C-T-E-D-T-O-S-E-R-E-N-A.
"Yes. And I think to Lyra's hunters. And possibly to Evelyn's accident." He looked at the lake. "One source. Four instruments."
She sat with this for a moment. The shape of it — a single intention behind four separate situations — was something she was turning over, the particular turning-over of someone who had believed their suffering was incidental and had been told it was deliberate.
Deliberate was worse than incidental in one way. It was better in another: it had a cause, and causes had addresses.
She blinked: W-H-Y-M-E.
"I don't know completely," he said. "But you're connected to the others. What he's collecting — the four of you together — has a specific configuration. He's building something. Using you as components."
She blinked: C-O-M-P-O-N-E-N-T-S.
"I know how that sounds," he said. "It's not — it doesn't reduce who you are. It describes what he's trying to use you for. There's a difference."
She looked at the lake's surface. Her reflection was visible — still dim, still fading at the edges, but there. Still there.
She blinked: T-H-E-S-O-U-L-E-A-T-E-R-I-S-S-T-I-L-L-T-H-E-R-E.
"Yes. I fractured it when I went into the thread last week. But fracturing isn't destroying. It's pulled back from the primary feeding position but it's still in the connection." He paused. "To remove it completely, I need to go deeper than I went last week."
She blinked: D-E-F-I-N-E-D-E-E-P-E-R.
"Last week I went to the edge of the thread," he said. "I saw the Soul Eater from outside and disrupted it at close range. To remove it, I need to go inside. Not just to the edge of the thread — into it. Into the space you occupy when you're not here and not fully there."
She looked at him.
"I know," he said. "It's not a small thing."
She blinked: W-H-A-T-H-A-P-P-E-N-S-T-O-Y-O-U-I-N-T-H-E-R-E.
"I'm not certain." He said it with the particular quality of honest uncertainty — not performing modesty, genuinely not knowing. "Soul-Echo is a perception ability. I've never used it in a space that isn't physical. The rules might be different. The Soul Eater might respond differently to me in its own territory than it responded when I came at it from outside." A pause. "The best case is I go in, disrupt it, come back out. The worst case is I get — caught. In the thread. Unable to find my way back."
She blinked: D-O-N-T.
"Your reflection is dimmer than it was two weeks ago," he said. Not harshly — factually, the way he said things that were true and needed to be said. "I measured. It's a consistent rate. If it continues at this rate —"
She blinked: I-K-N-O-W.
"You're running out of time," he said.
"I know" she blinked again, and then: H-O-W-L-O-N-G.
He was quiet. She had learned the quality of his quiet when he was doing arithmetic he did not want to do. "Weeks. Not many."
She looked at the lake. The reflection looked back at her — the girl she was, uncertain at the edges, holding on with both hands.
"I don't want you to risk this for me," she blinked.
"I know," he said. "That's noted." A pause. "I'm going to risk it anyway."
She looked at him.
"Not because I think it's simple or because I'm not paying attention to the risk," he said. "Because I have thought about it for three weeks and the alternative is unacceptable." He said it with the same quality as everything else he said that was simply true. "You are not acceptable to lose. I want to be clear about that."
She sat with the phrase. *You are not acceptable to lose.* Not *I will try my best* or *I want to help* or any of the softer frames. The direct statement: losing you is not acceptable, and I have decided to act on that assessment.
She blinked: W-H-A-T-D-O-Y-O-U-N-E-E-D-F-R-O-M-M-E.
"Anchor," he said. "The same way I've been anchoring you. If I go into the thread, I need something to hold onto from the other side. I need you to — maintain the connection. Keep the thread alive from your end. Three blinks every two minutes, the way we do it. If you stop blinking, I'll know to come back."
She absorbed this. He was asking her to hold him. To be the thing that kept him connected to the world while he went somewhere that was between worlds. He was asking her to do for him what he had been doing for her.
Reciprocal. He had used that word.
She blinked: I-C-A-N-D-O-T-H-A-T.
"I know you can," he said.
*W-H-E-N,* she blinked.
He looked at the lake. At the sky, which was the November sky, grey and committed. "When you're ready," he said. "I'm not in a hurry. We do this right."
She looked at her reflection in the lake.
The girl looking back at her had lavender hair that had been grey for weeks. The edges were soft. The image was dim.
But the girl was still looking back. Still there. Still holding on with both hands.
*I-A-M-R-E-A-D-Y,* she blinked.
He looked at her. Not with the careful quality of someone managing a serious decision — with the simple quality of someone who had known this answer was coming and had been waiting for her to be the one to say it.
"Tomorrow?" he said.
She blinked once.
He nodded. Looked at the lake. Looked back at her.
"Iris," he said. Her name, in the way he said it — with the weight of someone for whom names were not casual.
"Whatever happens in there," he said. "I know where I'm coming back to."
She held that.
In her chest, in whatever served as her chest in this state, something that had been wound very tight for a very long time loosened one notch.
Just one.
But one was enough to breathe differently.
