Room 312 at eleven-fifteen on a Thursday night.
The ward was at its overnight quiet — the particular reduction of a hospital after the last visiting hours, when the corridors moved into maintenance mode and the sounds became the sounds of machinery rather than people. The monitors in room 312 beeped their patient rhythm. The IV dripped its patient drip. The body in the bed did what it had been doing for a year: held on.
Aiden had arrived at eleven, per the plan. He had stood for a moment outside the door before coming in — she had seen him from inside the room, had watched him pause in the corridor with his hand not quite on the door, doing the thing he did when he was preparing himself for something. Not hesitating. Preparing. The distinction was one she had learned to read accurately.
He came in.
She was standing at the foot of the bed, where she usually stood when she was in this room — the position from which she could see both the body and the door, which was the position she had unconsciously chosen in the first weeks and had kept out of habit. She raised her hand. He nodded.
"Ready?" he said.
She blinked once.
He set his bag by the door — careful, not dropping — and came to the left side of the bed, the side opposite the monitoring equipment, where there was room to stand without interfering with the machinery. He looked at the body with the attention he had given it on the first visit: comprehensive, filing, without performance.
"Walk me through the anchor," he said. "What you need to do from your side."
She blinked: T-H-R-E-E-B-L-I-N-K-S-E-V-E-R-Y-T-W-O-M-I-N-U-T-E-S.
"And if I'm in trouble?"
S-E-V-E-N-B-L-I-N-K-S-R-A-P-I-D. She had thought about this in advance, had prepared the abort signal. He had not asked her to prepare it — she had prepared it because it seemed like the kind of thing that needed preparation.
He looked at the letters. Nodded. "Seven rapid. Understood." He looked at his watch. "I'll try to be under thirty minutes. If it goes past forty, use the abort signal."
She blinked: Y-E-S.
"Iris."
She looked at him.
"You know what to do," he said. "You've been doing harder things than this for a year. Trust yourself."
She blinked once.
He sat in the chair beside the bed — she had not expected sitting, but it made sense, the stability of a seated position for something that was going to require extended internal focus. He placed both hands on the bedrail rather than on the body — more stable, less direct, the approach of someone who was managing the intensity of the connection carefully.
He closed his eyes.
She watched the quality of his face change.
It was a subtle change — not the dramatic transformation of a person entering a trance, not the visible labor of someone straining toward something out of reach. Subtle in the specific way that things were subtle when they were real rather than performed: the small relaxation of the muscles around his eyes, the slight deepening of his breathing, the quality of his attention turning from outward to inward in the way she could see it but could not have described.
She felt him arrive.
Not physically — not in the way he arrived at the lake, with footsteps and headphones and the displacement of air. In the thread. In the space she inhabited when she was not here and not fully there. His frequency, distinct and recognizable as his, arrived in that space the way a hand arrived in a dark room — not visible, but present, the particular reassurance of a presence that you recognized.
She blinked: one-two-three.
In the chair, his jaw tightened slightly.
She blinked again: one-two-three. Steady. I'm here. I have you.
The Soul Eater moved.
She felt it — the thing she had been feeling at the edge of the thread for a year, the hunger that was not random but directed, that had been feeding on the connection between her and her body with the patient efficiency of something that knew it had time. She felt it register Aiden's frequency in the thread and she felt it recalibrate: the shift from feeding mode to something else. Defensive, or offensive, she wasn't certain which. Both, perhaps.
Aiden's face did not change. But the jaw tension increased.
She blinked: one-two-three. I'm here.
The Soul Eater moved toward him.
She felt this as a pressure — the thing turning its attention from her to him, drawn by his frequency the way dark things were drawn to light, by the particular pull of a perception ability operating at range. She felt it close on him and she felt the quality of his signal change: not weakening, but straining, the way a voice strained when it was speaking very loudly and sustaining it.
He was not running. He was listening.
This was the thing about Aiden Cross's ability, she had come to understand — it was not a weapon in the conventional sense. It was not a force he directed. It was a perception, and what he was doing now was perceiving the Soul Eater: hearing it, in the way his ability heard things, at full volume, without the management that kept the ordinary world manageable. He was listening to it the way you listened to something you needed to understand completely, without protection, without filter.
The Soul Eater did not like being listened to completely.
She felt it — the thing's resistance, the way something resisted when it was being understood against its will. It had operated in darkness, in the thread, for a year, consuming without being perceived. He was perceiving it. He was hearing it in the way that things became clear when they were fully heard — not forgiven, not ignored, but understood, which was in some ways more exposure than destruction.
She blinked: one-two-three. Steady. One-two-three.
The Soul Eater fractured.
Not all at once. It fractured the way things fractured when they were under sustained pressure from an unexpected angle — not broken, but cracked, the structural integrity compromised, the tight unity of a year's feeding disrupted into something less coherent. She felt it in the thread: the presence that had been constant and smooth becoming jagged, interrupted, uncertain of its own edges.
Aiden's signal in the thread receded.
She felt him pulling back — not retreating, just the natural withdrawal of a person who had done what they came to do and was returning by the path they had used to arrive. She felt his frequency leave the thread and she felt the thread's quality change in the absence of both the Soul Eater's full force and his perception's full pressure: looser, lighter, the quality of a space that had been occupied by something heavy and was reassessing its own dimensions.
She blinked seven rapid times.
Not the abort signal — she had reassigned the seven blinks. She was using it as: *come back, come back, come back, you can come back, I have you, come back.*
In the chair, he opened his eyes.
The pallor was real — not dramatic, not the pallor of someone who had damaged themselves, but the pallor of someone who had expended something significant and was feeling the expenditure. His breathing was controlled but deliberate, the breathing of someone maintaining something. The jaw that had been tight was now more relaxed, working through whatever residual tension the effort had left.
She moved around the bed to his side.
She was blinking continuously — not code, just: *I'm here, I'm here, I'm here.* He looked up and found her, which he always could, with the particular accuracy of a person whose perception had learned the specific signature of one frequency among many.
She blinked: A-R-E-Y-O-U-O-K.
He sat in the chair with his hands on the bedrail and his breathing returning toward normal and he looked at her for a long moment.
"You held it," he said. "The whole time. Every two minutes."
She blinked: Y-O-U-W-E-R-E-T-H-E-R-E-I-C-O-U-L-D-F-E-E-L-Y-O-U.
"Yes," he said. "I know. That's — " He stopped. "That helped."
She looked at him. At the tiredness on his face that was the tiredness of someone who had been somewhere difficult and had returned from it. At the headphones at his collarbone, slightly displaced from their usual position from the effort of sitting very still for thirty-two minutes.
She blinked: W-H-A-T-D-I-D-Y-O-U-S-E-E.
He was quiet for a moment. Looking at the bed, at the body, at the thread he had just come back from.
"Something that has been there a long time," he said. "Something that was placed with purpose and has been patient." A pause. "It's fractured. It'll recover — they do, these things, unless you remove them completely. But it's weaker. The thread is clearer than it was." He looked at her. "You should feel a difference."
She thought about it. Felt, in the particular way she felt things in this state — through the thread, through the connection, through the accumulated months of learning to perceive her own condition with something like accuracy.
She blinked: Y-E-S.
Something was different. Subtle — not the dramatic clearing she had imagined, but a reduction in resistance, the way a path was easier when something that had been blocking it had been moved. Not removed. Moved.
"We'll need to do it again," he said. "To complete it. The fracture will hold for a while but the Soul Eater will reconsolidate if we don't finish it."
She blinked: W-H-E-N.
"When I've had time to recover," he said. "A week. Maybe less. I want to go back while the fracture is fresh and it's still disoriented."
She blinked: O-K.
He looked at her — the way he looked at her in the specific moments when he was seeing her with whatever the full capacity of his perception was, without the usual layers of management. "You didn't flinch," he said. "When the Soul Eater turned toward me. You kept the anchor."
She blinked: I-W-A-S-N-O-T-G-O-I-N-G-T-O-L-O-S-E-Y-O-U-I-N-T-H-E-R-E.
He looked at the letters as she gave them. Read them.
His face did the thing she had not seen it do before — or had seen glimpses of, in specific moments, but not this fully. Unguarded. Present, without the layers of management he kept between himself and the world, the layers she had been learning for months were not distance but protection, and that their absence now meant something.
"Iris," he said.
She looked at him.
"Thank you," he said.
She blinked once.
She reached out — toward him, past the bedrail, across the small space between the chair and where she was standing. Her hand found his shoulder. Solid. Warm. The fabric of his jacket, the arm underneath, three seconds of contact that was more real than anything she had touched in a year.
She felt him go very still.
She held the contact for the three seconds it was possible and then let it go. Her hand fell back to her side.
"You're stronger," he said. Quietly, like something he was noting rather than announcing.
She blinked: Y-O-U-T-O-O.
He almost laughed. Not quite — the not-quite-laugh, the breath that would have been a laugh in a different register. But she had made him almost laugh, which was a thing she was counting.
They stayed in room 312 for another twenty minutes — him recovering, her holding the anchor simply as a presence, the monitors keeping their patient time. And she thought, in the particular way she had been learning to think in this state — carefully, without reaching too far, holding what she had:
*He went in.*
*He came back.*
*Both of those things happened because of the other.*
*This,* she thought, *is what it means for someone to come for you.*
