She felt the difference in the morning.
Not dramatically — not the way she had imagined it in the months when she had let herself imagine it, which was to say rarely and carefully and always with a limit on how vivid the imagining became, because vivid imaginings of things you could not have were a particular kind of harm she had learned to protect herself from. She had imagined: sudden, clear, certain, a return to the world she had left the way you returned to a room after a long absence, with the relief of recognition.
What she felt instead was: a reduction in resistance.
Like a door that had been stuck for a year and was now merely closed. Not open. Not easy. Just: the stuck thing was gone, and what remained was the ordinary closedness that could be addressed by ordinary means if ordinary means became available.
This was, she had decided by the time Aiden returned to room 312 at nine the following morning, better than the imagining.
The imagining was about arrival. This was about approach. And approach meant something was coming — gradually, contingently, not guaranteed, but possible in a way it had not been yesterday.
He came in with the visitor's lanyard and the bag and the headphones and the quality of someone who had slept but not enough, who had recovered but not completely. The pallor of the previous night had reduced to the level of normal tiredness rather than expended-effort tiredness. He was managing.
She blinked: H-O-W-A-R-E-Y-O-U.
"Better," he said. "You?"
She blinked: D-I-F-F-E-R-E-N-T.
He looked at her with the full-attention quality. "Different how."
She thought about how to describe it. Blinked: L-E-S-S-S-T-U-C-K.
A pause. Something moved through his face — not quite the unguarded expression from the previous night, but adjacent to it. Something he was receiving carefully. "The thread is clearer," he said. "I can hear it from here. Less obstruction."
One blink.
"That's real progress," he said.
She blinked: B-E-C-A-U-S-E-O-F-Y-O-U.
"Because of both of us," he said. "The anchor was as important as the disruption. You held it the whole time."
She looked at him.
He had been doing this — the both-of-us, the you-too, the particular construction of sentences that distributed the weight of things evenly rather than placing it only on one side. She had been learning to receive it. She was getting better at it.
"I want to try something," he said. "If you're willing."
She blinked: W-H-A-T.
"The thread is clearer today than yesterday. I want to see if the contact range has improved. From your side." He paused. "Last night you touched my shoulder for three seconds. That was stronger than the previous attempts. I want to see if it holds consistently or if it was specific to the high-energy state of last night."
She considered this. It was the kind of careful, methodical approach she had come to expect from him: the hypothesis, the test, the honest assessment of what the result would mean. No dramatizing. No false hope. Just: let's find out what's true.
She blinked: O-K.
She moved to the side of the bed where he was standing. Closer than she usually stood — she had a default distance she maintained, a habit of not crowding, the particular spatial discipline of someone who had spent a year not taking up space. She moved closer than that default.
She reached toward the body first.
Her hand extended toward the body's hand — the hand that had been still for a year, that belonged to her and was not quite hers, that was the other side of the thread she had been holding. She reached toward it with the particular concentration she had developed for physical contact: not straining, not forcing, just — present, and allowing the contact.
Her fingertips touched the back of the hand.
Cold. The specific cold of a body that was maintained by machines rather than by the heat of living metabolism. But solid. Real. She felt the texture of the skin, the slight give of it, the particular sensation of touching something that was hers and not hers simultaneously.
The monitors registered a change. Not an alarm — a small variation in the pattern, the kind of variation that was within the normal range but was different from the previous moments' reading. She had seen this before, in the early months, when she had made her first attempts. The body knew.
Aiden was watching the monitors and watching her. Both, simultaneously, the way he watched multiple things.
"How long?" he said.
She counted: five seconds. Six. Seven. The cold of the hand under her fingers. The solidity of it. The monitors steady.
Ten seconds.
She withdrew.
"Ten," he said. "Three times what it was in the early attempts."
She blinked: T-H-E-S-O-U-L-E-A-T-E-R-I-S-W-E-A-K-E-R.
"Yes. The contact range improves as it weakens." He was quiet for a moment, doing the arithmetic she could see him doing. "If we can keep fracturing it at this rate — each session making it weaker, the thread clearer — the contact range will keep improving. At some point the range will be sufficient to —"
He stopped.
She blinked: S-A-Y-I-T.
He looked at her. At the body. At her again.
"To come back," he said. "At some point the thread will be clear enough and the contact strong enough that returning won't require anything except choosing to."
She stood beside her own body in a hospital room on a grey November morning and held this statement with both hands.
Not guaranteed. Not soon. Not certain.
But: at some point.
She turned toward him. He was standing two feet away — the distance had been closing incrementally over the weeks, the way distances closed between people who had stopped measuring them. She reached.
Her hand found his sleeve, his arm, the solid warmth of him — and she felt it, the contact, real and present and lasting, and she counted: one, two, three, four, five, six —
Seven.
Eight.
Nine.
His face did not move. He stood very still in the way of someone who understood that movement might end something before it was ready to end. She felt his pulse through the sleeve — not through the fabric, that was not how it worked, but through the connection that existed between them, the particular warmth that was his specific warmth, the frequency she had been learning since the first night at the lake.
Ten seconds.
Eleven.
Twelve.
She withdrew at thirteen, because she could feel the edge of her capacity approaching and she wanted to stop before the end rather than be ended by it. The difference mattered to her. Choosing to stop rather than being stopped.
He exhaled slowly.
"Thirteen," he said.
She blinked: M-O-R-E-T-H-A-N-L-A-S-T-N-I-G-H-T.
"Yes." He looked at his sleeve. At her. "We're doing this."
She looked at the room — the monitors, the body, the November light through the window, the chair where he had sat for thirty-two minutes the previous night with his hands on the bedrail and his eyes closed and his frequency reaching into the dark to find the thing that had been feeding on her for a year.
She blinked: *O-N-E-D-A-Y-I-L-L-S-T-A-Y.*
He read the letters as she gave them. She watched his face read them — the careful, present quality, taking each word in turn.
"One day I'll stay," he said.
One blink.
"I know," he said. And then, after a pause that had the quality of something being decided: "I'm counting those days too. The ones we're building toward."
She stood in room 312 with the monitors beeping and the thread between her and the body clearer than it had been yesterday and his frequency warm in the room's frequency and she thought:
*A year ago I was fading.*
*I was alone in this room and I was fading and the thread was almost gone.*
*Now someone is counting the days toward the day I stay.*
*Now someone is in the room and the thread is clearer and the contact lasted thirteen seconds.*
*Thirteen seconds,* she thought. *Last week it was nothing.*
*One day it will be everything.*
*I can wait for one day.*
*I have learned, very specifically, how to wait.*
