She had walked this path before.
Every step of it. She had walked it when her feet did not make the gravel crunch the way they made it crunch now — had moved through it at the particular elevation of someone between states, not quite touching the ground, experiencing the path as a sequence of spatial relationships rather than as a surface that pushed back against her weight.
Now it pushed back.
This was the sensation she kept encountering and had not yet entirely adapted to: the resistance of the physical world. Stairs that required effort. Wind that had mass. Gravel that gave information through the soles of shoes she had forgotten how to walk in. She had been relearning the weight of things for three weeks and was improving, but occasionally the weight caught her unaware and she stood for a moment in the surprise of being fully, physically present somewhere.
She stood for a moment now, at the entrance to the Memory Walk path, with the festival lights strung overhead and the November campus doing its late-evening things and Aiden coming down the path from the harbor view station.
He was tired. She could see it — the particular tiredness she had observed in him from the other side, during the lake-side evenings and the hospital visits, the tiredness of someone who had been fully present in multiple demanding ways and had not yet accounted for the expenditure. But underneath the tired was the same quality she had seen all evening in the small observations she had been making from her observation post in the library window: something warm and sustained. Something that had been added to rather than depleted from.
He found her at the path entrance.
She said: "You're tired."
"Yes," he said. "How can you tell?"
She considered. "Your posture is different. You're carrying your weight slightly differently. And your headphones are at a slightly different angle than your baseline." She paused. "I've been observing you for a long time in conditions where you didn't know you were being observed. I know your defaults."
He looked at her.
"I spent a year following you around campus," she said. "I know how you look when you've been working. I also know how you look right now, which is tired-but-good. Those are different."
"Tired-but-good," he repeated.
"Yes. The tired is on the surface. The good is underneath it." She turned toward the path. "Come on. We're walking."
They walked.
The Memory Walk had been given its name for the festival, she suspected — it was not a name she had seen on any campus map. It was simply one of the paths that curved around the eastern edge of campus, past the administration building, along the fence that separated the university from the coastal reserve, down to the point where the campus ended and the cliff walk began. It was not a dramatic path. It was a path that most students used as a route to somewhere else.
She had used it as a destination.
For a year she had come to this path because it was long and because its length gave her something to do, which was a thing she had needed during the months when she had been desperate for things to do because doing things was how she had proven to herself that she still existed in some sense. She had walked this path in October's early dark and in November's later dark and in the particular quality of campus evening that existed between the end of the workday and the beginning of the night, when students moved between things and the paths were occupied but not crowded.
She had walked it without sound. Without gravel crunch.
She pointed at a place on the left side of the path — a slight widening where a bench had been placed at some point and then removed, leaving the concrete pad.
"I stood here in March," she said. "You walked past at seven-forty-two in the evening. You had your headphones on. You were reading something on your phone while you walked, which I always thought was dangerous given the gravel."
"I know the path well enough," he said.
"I know you do. You walked it frequently. I counted." She looked at the concrete pad. "Ninety-seven times, between October and the night you saw me at the lake."
He was quiet for a moment.
"You counted ninety-seven times," he said.
"I had time," she said. "And not much else to track." She started walking again. "I also knew the schedule of the grounds crew, the timing of the building security checks, the specific acoustics of this path at different hours. I became very good at knowing things about a place I couldn't touch."
He walked beside her. She was aware of the difference — him beside her now, walking, his footsteps audible and in rhythm with hers, versus him walking past her ninety-seven times without knowing she was standing there. The same path. The same person. The distance between those two configurations was not measurable in feet.
She pointed at another spot — the curve where the administration building's light fell across the path.
"February," she said. "You were on the phone. I've never heard you on the phone before or since — you almost always text. But that night you were on the phone and you sounded — " She paused, finding the word. "Careful. You were being very careful about what you said. I thought about it for a long time after."
"I remember that call," he said. "Family."
She nodded. She did not ask further. She had been the witness of that call and it was his to keep.
They walked to the lake. Of course they walked to the lake — it was at the end of this path and it was the place and she had known when she saw the station assignment that this was where the walk would end.
The festival lights did not extend to the lake. But the moon was up and the water held it in the way water held the sky, and the bench at the bank edge was still there, and the particular quality of this place at this hour — which she had spent more time in than any other place on campus, from above the water and now from beside it — was unmistakable.
She stood at the edge of the bank and looked at the water.
Her reflection looked back at her. Clear. Sharp. The lavender of her hair more distinct in the moonlight than in the grey of day, the edges of her face defined, the eyes that were not fog-grey but were the specific grey of someone who had been in fog and had come out of it.
She had looked at this reflection for a year from the wrong side. From above the surface, from the angle of a presence that was between things, the reflection had been dim and uncertain and fading. Now she was looking at it from the right side and it was exactly as real as she was.
She stood and looked at herself in the lake for a moment.
He stood beside her and looked at the lake.
"The first time you asked me why I wasn't home," she said.
"Yes."
"I didn't have an answer. I'd been asking myself the same question for months and I didn't have an answer." She paused. "I have one now."
He waited.
"Home is where someone remembers you," she said. "Not the body in the room. You. The specific you." She looked at her reflection. "You remembered me. You wrote my name in a notebook and then you held it in your head every day for months and it kept the thread alive." She paused. "This is home. Because you're here and you know me."
She heard the quality of his breath change. Not dramatically — a small shift, the particular sound of a person receiving something that landed deeply.
"Iris," he said.
"Don't say anything sentimental," she said. "You'll ruin it."
A breath. And then — she heard it. Actually heard it, with her ears, the real version: a laugh. Small and genuine and startled, the particular sound of a person who had been surprised into laughter rather than arriving at it by intention.
She had heard the precursor to this sound many times from the frequency. She had not heard the actual sound with her actual ears until right now.
It sounded better in person.
She stood at the lake bank with the moon and her reflection and the laugh still in the air around them and she thought: *this. this is what I came back for.*
The organiser's signal drifted from the festival, distant.
She turned from the lake. He turned from the lake. They walked back toward the festival lights together, and somewhere in the middle of the path she put her hand on his arm — the same arm she had reached for ninety-seven times from the wrong side without being able to touch — and he continued walking and she continued walking and the path crunched under her feet with the reliable physical honesty of gravel bearing weight.
*Ninety-seven times,* she thought.
*And then the ninety-eighth.*
*Everything after that has been the ninety-eighth.*
