She had been watching from the library window.
This was not new behavior — Lyra had been watching from windows for months, had made an art form of the elevated observation point, had developed a methodology for tracking multiple threads from a single location that had served her well throughout the semester. She had watched Evelyn come back from the garden and had read her footsteps: soft, careful, carrying something. She had watched Serena come back from the harbor and had read hers: steady, more grounded than usual, the particular walk of someone who has received something they were waiting for and has integrated it. She had tracked Aiden's movement through the festival by frequency — the warm signal moving through the evening like a signal in a landscape she knew the geography of.
Now she watched all five converge on the central plaza from four different directions.
She had done the math before she went down. The stations had been chosen in a specific order — she had understood that when she understood that Aiden had chosen the order, and she had understood why each person was placed where they were placed. She had appreciated it. She had also noted that she had been placed first, which meant she had the maximum time in which to observe the aftermath of the others, which was either a coincidence or something Aiden had done deliberately because he understood her.
She suspected the latter.
She was the last to arrive at the central plaza, which she had also understood would be the case, because she had waited until she had seen all four others moving toward the same point from different directions. She came down from the library at the pace she wanted rather than the pace the situation might have suggested, crossed the plaza with the unhurried quality she preferred, and arrived at the center to find:
Evelyn, standing with her head slightly tilted and her hands folded, with the expression of someone who was still sitting with something.
Iris, standing with her hand on Aiden's arm, which she had apparently kept from the Memory Walk, which was information Lyra filed under: physical contact, comfortable, unprompted.
Serena, standing with the quality that was her current quality — the one with the edges. Not managing. Just present.
Aiden, standing in the middle of the cluster of them with the tired-but-good expression Iris had named, looking at each of them in turn with the grey eyes doing what they did when they were receiving multiple things at once.
Lyra took her position at the edge of the cluster — not the center, not the periphery, the edge, which was where she preferred to be in most configurations. She opened her notebook and looked at the blank page.
She sent a thought into the space rather than into his head: *We all know, right? Everyone in this circle knows that we're all in this circle because of the same reason.*
She felt him register it. He looked at her. She kept her eyes on the notebook.
She wrote, in the large handwriting she used for group communication, and turned the notebook to face the cluster: *I'm going to say the obvious thing so no one has to pretend it isn't obvious.*
Evelyn turned her head toward the notebook. Serena read it. Iris read it. Aiden read it.
She wrote the next line: *We are all here because of him. We've all been around this for months now. The question is what we do with that.*
The festival was doing its end-of-evening things around them. Booths closing, lights in some sections going dark, the keyboard player from the plaza finishing their last song. The cold air was fully cold now — the committed cold of late November, the kind that did not apologize.
Iris said: "I'll say first. I don't want him to be one person's." She said it with the directness she brought to everything. "I was invisible for a year and then I wasn't and the reason I wasn't is him. I'm not going to pretend that means something small. But I also don't want the version of it where someone wins and the rest of us lose. That version is wrong."
Evelyn said: "I agree. And I think — " she paused, finding the right words in the careful way she found words — "I think the version where someone wins doesn't actually match what this is. He's not divisible. What each of us has with him isn't competing with what the others have. They're different things that happen to involve the same person."
Serena said, after a moment: "I've been thinking about this since the arrangement began. The wraith always told me that attachment led to vulnerability and vulnerability led to loss." A pause. "The wraith is wrong about most things. But I've been asking myself whether the mathematics of sharing someone's attention makes the attachment less real. The answer I keep arriving at is no."
Lyra turned the notebook and wrote: *I've been watching all of you for months. I know what each of you has with him. I know what I have. It's not the same and it's not competing. It's —* She paused, looking for the word. *Multi-voiced.* She turned the notebook and held it up.
Iris read it. "Like a chord."
"Yes," Evelyn said. "Exactly like a chord. The voices are different and the chord requires all of them."
Serena looked at the notebook and at the group and at Aiden standing in the center of it. "Are we doing something unusual," she said, "or are we simply acknowledging what's already been happening?"
A pause. And then Iris: "I think we're acknowledging it."
Lyra turned the notebook to face Aiden. She had written: *And you. You get to choose too.*
He read it.
The festival was almost fully closed around them. The lights that remained were the lights at the path edges, the ones that would stay on until the last people left. The cold air moved through the plaza with the particular presence of late-November air, which was honest about what it was.
He looked at the notebook. At Lyra. At each of them in turn.
Then he said, quietly, directed at no single one of them but at all: "I hear all of you. I've always heard all of you."
A pause.
"And I want," he said. The word landing with everything it carried for him — the word he had been learning to say, the word that was still slightly new in his mouth, the word that was the opposite of *I'm useful here* and *they need me.* "I want."
Not specified. Not divided. Not one of them more than another.
Just: want. Present, active, without qualification.
Lyra looked at the notebook page. At the word she had written earlier: *multi-voiced.* Below it she wrote, small, the final line of the page:
*That's the word. That's what this is.*
She closed the notebook.
The festival lights continued their patient illumination. The cold continued its honest work. Around the central plaza the last of the evening's participants moved toward exits and she stood at the edge of the cluster with the headphones in her bag and the notebook closed and the frequency of the people around her — four separate signals, distinct and recognizable and warm — and she thought:
In the ocean, the deepest harmonics traveled the farthest.
The ones that moved through everything, that didn't require surface conditions, that couldn't be heard at the surface but shaped everything that could.
She thought: *this is one of those.*
*This has been one of those for a while.*
*I'm just now hearing it clearly.*
