He came to find her after lunch.
She was in the library — she had started using it for the theoretical work, the part of her botanical and Luminology research that required books rather than soil, and she had gradually acquired a corner of it: two stacks of reference volumes, her working notebooks arranged in her own system, the particular lamp from the desk that gave the best light for reading small print. She had not asked permission to establish this corner and it had not been objected to, which was how several things at Luminara Hall had been settled.
Cassian came in and stopped when he saw her, which was not unusual — he had a habit of recalibrating when he found her somewhere he hadn't expected, as though he needed a moment to adjust the conversation he had prepared for the one that was actually available.
He crossed to the other side of the table and stood, and then — in a motion that she had learned to recognize as him doing something that cost him, the particular quality of deliberate action rather than habitual — he sat down.
Not across from her. Beside her. At the same side of the table, with the lamp between them, close enough that she could see the quality of what was in his face, which was controlled but only just.
"I should have told you your father worked here," he said. "When I sent the contract. I should have disclosed that, and I chose not to, and I would like to explain why, but the explanation is secondary to the fact that I should have told you and I didn't."
She set down her pen.
This was not the conversation she had been preparing for. She had been preparing for the systematic disclosure he had promised her in the burned room — facts, dates, the architecture of what had happened. She had not been preparing for this: a man who had led with the apology, before the explanation, who had made the distinction between them explicit.
She was quiet for a moment, letting the apology be what it was rather than immediately moving past it.
"All right," she said.
"I chose not to disclose it because I thought — if you knew in advance the connection to your father, you would come here looking for something specific. And the system responds to what you bring to it. I wanted you to come to it without preconceptions." He paused. "That was a rationalization. The real reason was that I was not ready to tell you. I hadn't decided what I was willing to say, and rather than say that, I chose to withhold the information entirely."
She looked at him. This was more self-analysis than she had heard from him in twenty days combined, and it had the particular quality of something that had been arrived at — not performed, but genuinely figured out, probably in the hours since the burned room.
"Thank you for saying that clearly," she said.
He looked at her with a brief expression that suggested he had expected more resistance. Then he continued.
"Your father," he said. "What I know, and what I am able to tell you."
He told her methodically. The research program in its original form — legitimate, careful, her father's contribution foundational. The shift that had occurred when Halewick began to press toward the application phase before the theoretical framework was secure. Her father's increasing resistance, his formal objections, the document that Cassian had kept because he had not known what to do with it and had not been ready to examine what keeping it meant.
"He left when?" she asked.
"Approximately three years before his death. The disagreement with Halewick had become irreconcilable. Your father submitted a formal objection to the research ethics committee of the Elyndorian Academy. They reviewed it and found the concerns preliminary rather than conclusive. Halewick retained his position." A pause. "Your father resigned from the collaboration the same week."
"And then?"
"Then he returned to Mirrowen. We maintained correspondence — professional, not frequent. He continued his own private research. I closed the east wing after the fire here — Halewick's access was terminated. I thought — I believed, at that time, that the problem had been contained." His voice was flat with the flatness of a man for whom a past error had been present for years and had worn smooth. "And then your father died."
"And you didn't connect the two fires," she said.
"I connected them." He said it quietly. "But I didn't want the connection to be real. And there was no evidence — the Mirrowen coroner found nothing inconsistent with accident. I had a connection that was circumstantial and a grief that was — " He stopped. "Your father was not my friend in the conventional sense. But he was someone I respected completely. His death was — it changed the way I understood what had been happening here."
"It changed what you were willing to know," she said.
He looked at her with the expression of a man who has been accurately described. "Yes."
She reached into her jacket pocket and removed the paper fragment. She set it on the table between them, beside the lamp, in the good light.
He looked at it. His eyes moved from the fragment to her face and back to the fragment. She watched him read the surviving text. She watched his expression receive what it said.
"This is Evelise's hand," he said. His voice had a different quality — quieter, with a texture she didn't hear from him often: something that was grief and anger in a compound that had been setting for three years.
"Yes. I found it in the burned room last night. It was wedged in a baseboard crack." She kept her voice even. "She was documenting something. In the burned room, probably after hours, in the period when she was doing the private research Isolde told me about."
He looked at the three final words. *— not an accident.*
"She knew," he said.
"She knew, and she tried to create a record of what she knew, and someone burned the record." She paused. "Rowan also found something. A modification to the secondary gear housing — an undocumented addition that makes the mirror array hold a fixed position for eleven minutes and forty-two seconds." She watched his face. "Eleven minutes and forty-two seconds. At midnight, I believe, based on the light angle."
He was very still.
"The music," she said.
"Yes." One word. Carried a great deal.
"The east wing is being lit. At midnight, with a concentrated light pattern from the modified mirror array." She looked at him directly. "Someone has been activating it from outside. Someone who has access that you didn't authorize."
Cassian stood. The movement was not agitated — it was the movement of a man who could not manage what he was managing while seated, who needed the option of space and motion even if he didn't use them. He went to the window and stood with his back to her, looking out at the grey garden.
She waited.
"I closed the east wing," he said. "I thought I had ended it. I thought removing Halewick's access was enough." A pause. "I was wrong about what enough meant."
"Cassian." She stood and went to stand beside him — not behind him, beside him, in the same orientation, looking at the same grey garden. "I don't think this was your fault. I think you made decisions with the information you had and the capacity you had at the time. But — " She paused. "I need you to stop choosing not to know."
He turned to look at her. The grey eyes in the window light, without the usual management, with the specific quality of someone who has been standing in front of something true for long enough that they are finally ready to look at it directly.
"Yes," he said. "I know."
She looked back at him for a moment that held more than either of them was yet naming.
Then he crossed to the desk and opened the middle drawer and took out a key. Small, copper-colored, with the specific profile she had identified in the west storage and the east wing and the box that still sat on her writing desk upstairs.
He placed it on the table.
"This opens everything in this house that you haven't been able to open yet," he said. "I should have given it to you when you arrived."
She looked at the key. She looked at him.
She thought: *this is not the key to the locks. This is what he has been protecting, and he is giving it to me, and he knows what that means.*
She picked it up.
"Thank you," she said.
He nodded.
They stood in the library in the afternoon light with the paper fragment on the table between them and the key in her hand, and outside the grey Elyndor coast did its permanent work of weather and sea and time, and inside the house held what it had always held — secrets and grief and a garden that was slowly becoming something else — and something shifted, very slightly, in the architecture of what they were to each other.
Not named. Not spoken. But real.
She could feel it the same way she could feel the charge in the soil of the conservatory — something present, something that had been there for some time, beginning to move.
