The key was smaller than she remembered.
Seraphine had placed it on her writing desk the night before, after the library, after the conversation that had ended with Cassian walking to his study and closing the door with the careful quietness of someone who needed to be alone with something large. She had looked at the key for a while before going to bed. In the morning it was still there, catching the early light from the window, ordinary and specific at once — a small copper object that opened things that had been closed for years.
She made tea before she opened the box. This was not superstition — it was the habit of someone who had learned that significant things deserved to be approached with full attention, and that full attention was easier to achieve when the body's immediate requirements had been addressed. Tea. The particular stillness of the kitchen at half past six. The sound of the sea coming through the stone walls in the way it always did, permanent and indifferent and oddly comforting.
Then she went upstairs and sat at her writing desk and placed the box in front of her.
*E. Marrow.* The name in the morning light.
She put the key in the lock. The mechanism turned with the small, precise sound of something working exactly as it was designed to work, a sound that was in its way the most articulate thing she had heard in Luminara Hall — the sound of a thing finally doing what it had been made for.
The lid opened.
Inside: a small leather-bound notebook, the kind sold at any stationery in Elyndor, nothing remarkable about its cover except that it was Evelise's and had been here in the dark for three years. Beneath the notebook: a bundle of letters, perhaps twelve, tied with a length of ribbon that had once been blue and was now the color of old blue, which was something different. And beneath the letters, resting in a nest of black velvet: a piece of treated glass, perhaps three inches square, in a thin brass frame. The glass had the depth she recognized. The brass frame had the notation symbol she recognized.
She looked at all three things for a moment without touching them beyond the initial uncovering.
Then she picked up the notebook.
Evelise Marrow's handwriting was round and deliberate, the handwriting of someone who had been taught to write carefully and had kept the habit. The entries were dated, chronological, the record of approximately four months in the year before her death. Seraphine did not read immediately — she held the notebook open to the first page and looked at the quality of the handwriting, the pressure of the pen, the way the letters were formed, because these things told her things about the person that the words themselves sometimes didn't.
The pressure was consistent throughout. The letters were formed with the attention of someone who had decided that what they were writing mattered and wanted it to be legible. There was no sign of the deterioration in handwriting that often accompanied extreme stress — Evelise's hand was as clear on the last pages as on the first, which meant that whatever she had been feeling, she had remained functional. She had remained herself.
*She was like you,* Isolde had said. *She didn't leave things unfinished.*
Seraphine was on the third page when the door opened.
She looked up.
Cassian stood in the doorway. He had knocked — she realized she had heard it without registering it, too absorbed in the notebook to process external sound. He was looking at the open box on the desk, at the notebook in her hands, with the expression of someone arriving at a moment they had been moving toward without quite knowing it.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Seraphine said, *"Come in,"* and he came in and sat in the chair across the desk — not the chair against the wall, not the chair farthest from her, but the one directly across the writing desk, the chair that put him at the same table as what she was reading — and he did not ask for the notebook and he did not ask her to stop.
She began to read aloud.
Not because she had decided to. Because the room and the morning and the fact of him sitting across from her had arranged themselves into a kind of permission, and Evelise's words were the kind of words that deserved to be spoken into the air rather than processed in silence. They deserved a witness. Evelise had not had a witness.
She had one now.
The early entries were observational — methodical notes on things Evelise had noticed in the conservatory, in the research program, in the behavior of Dr. Halewick during his visits. She wrote with the precision of someone who knew that precision was the difference between evidence and impression, between something that could be used and something that could be dismissed.
*October 14th. H. arrived at the conservatory at approximately nine in the evening, three hours after his scheduled departure. I observed him entering through the garden door using a key I have not seen before. He was in the east wing for approximately forty minutes. When he emerged, he was carrying a case of the flat glass panels — the treated ones from the central storage. He did not see me.*
*October 22nd. I have been measuring the temperature in the east wing on a daily basis. It has been rising, very slightly, by approximately half a degree each week. The plants in the eastern section are responding — their photonic output has increased measurably. This is consistent with what I understand about the light-retention threshold — the point at which accumulated trace begins to self-amplify rather than simply store. H. knows about the threshold. He has been working toward it deliberately.*
Cassian listened without speaking. His hands were on the desk, still.
*November 3rd. I found the notation in Lady Oriane's sitting room — scratched into the underside of the windowsill with something sharp, perhaps a hairpin. The same symbol as the conservatory markings. She put it there herself, I think. She was in the conservatory every day for the last year of her life, for the light therapy sessions that H. recommended. I don't think she knew what the sessions were doing. I don't think she consented to what the sessions were doing. I think she simply trusted him because Maribel trusted him and because she was very tired and he said it would help.*
Seraphine paused.
She looked at Cassian. His jaw was set. His hands had not moved.
*"Keep reading,"* he said.
She kept reading.
The entries moved toward December with increasing urgency, the handwriting no less precise but the intervals between entries shorter, the observations more specific. Evelise had been building a case with the methodical patience of someone who understood that incomplete evidence was worse than no evidence, that a charge without proof was a charge that could be turned against the person making it.
*November 17th. I have identified the second person in the system. Not H. himself — someone who has been making the modifications to the gear train on his behalf, someone who knows the conservatory's mechanical systems from the inside. His name is Aldric Voss. He was employed here as a maintenance engineer for three years, departed approximately fourteen months ago. I believe H. recruited him before he left. The modifications to the gear train were made over an extended period — some date from before Voss's departure, some from after, which means he still has access.*
Cassian looked up sharply. "Voss."
"You know him."
"He left Luminara Hall fourteen months ago," Cassian said. The flatness in his voice had the specific quality of a man identifying a thing he should have identified long before. "His references were good. There was no reason to question the departure." A pause. "He's been working for the Halewick Institute since then. I knew that. I didn't connect it."
"He's still in Elyndor?"
"Yes."
She looked at the notation she had made in her own margin: *the person giving Halewick access is not Maribel.* Not Maribel. Someone Cassian had employed and trusted for three years, who had left with good references and had been recruited before he left.
She turned to the last pages.
*December 8th. I think he knows I've been watching. Three days ago he spoke to me at dinner about the research program with the particular warmth he uses when he is managing someone — I have learned to recognize it. He is assessing how much I know. He doesn't know about this notebook. I have been careful.*
*December 9th. Tomorrow I will have enough to take to the Royal Ethics Committee. I need one more thing — the records in the east wing, the collection logs that would show the dates and quantities of what has been extracted from the system. If those records are there, they constitute direct evidence of unauthorized experimentation on a non-consenting subject.*
*C. will be in the city until Friday. The east wing will be accessible after midnight. It should be safe. I'll go tonight.*
The entry ended there.
No December 10th entry.
Seraphine closed the notebook carefully and placed it on the desk between them.
The morning had advanced while she read — the light in the room had shifted from the pale grey of early morning to the fuller, more honest light of nine o'clock, and in this light the small writing desk and the two people on either side of it and the open box with its contents were very clearly visible to each other.
Cassian looked at the closed notebook.
"She went in to get the collection logs," he said.
"Yes."
"The logs would have been in the east wing's documentation cabinet. I know where it is." A pause. "I have access to it."
"Then after — " She stopped.
"After this," he said, "we go look."
She nodded.
Outside, the sea went on with its permanent business. Inside, Luminara Hall held them both — the weight of Evelise's careful handwriting, the weight of the knowledge it contained, the weight of three years in which this box had been waiting behind a mirror bracket for someone to look carefully enough to find it.
Seraphine thought: *she found what she needed. She just didn't have time to use it.*
"We'll have time," she said. She had not meant to say it aloud — it was meant for herself, or for Evelise, or for the morning.
But Cassian heard it. And he looked at her across the desk with the grey eyes that were, in the full morning light, less grey than she usually thought them — warmer, in the particular way that things showed their real color when the light was honest enough.
"Yes," he said. "We will."
